Aging Healthy?

This week we are challenged in the #weekend-engagement writing topics to talk about what age we would like to live to and why. We are also asked on this same topic if we have plans to ensure we make it physically and that we can sustain ourselves financially to that age.

I have never put much thought to how long I might live but have thought about it on a few occasions. Just not sure why I haven’t put much thought to it. Maybe because I fear my own mortality, maybe it is because it seems half the men in my family, on both paternal and maternal, die in their sixties.

Dying at that age is something that is not incredibly attractive to me at all, so I guess that is why I ignore thinking about it. Now that we have a writing topic, I have put some grey matter into it and feel 85-90 years old would suffice. That is as long as I am still able to get around decently at that age. It seems to me that people I do know at that age seem to always be in good spirits and healthy.

I know there are people at that age that seem infirmed, but I don’t plan to be that way. This means I need to get my act together health and financial wise to be prepared for living that long.

My health is something that is really a challenge, but I do have control over what I put into my mouth and feed my gullet. Right now, even with blood sugar issues, I am terrible at monitoring what I eat. This is something that starting already I have made improvements. Just this lunch time I ate a kale salad...yuck! But it is good for me and that is what matters. Ignoring short term pleasures for long term success, I guess.

Financially I am in a good position from where I stand. There are no riches hidden away or to be inherited by my kids, but there have been enough good decisions made that I should be able to live comfortably into those older years.

In the end, living to 85-90 seems like a decent goal. That is as long as I can discipline myself to make healthier choices moving forward.

I'm lucky in that I don't mind healthy food. My wife serves mainly veggies and mushrooms and that's pretty ok by me. In fact, after eating this way for a few years, when I have some candy with tons of sugar it's way too sweet and I don't want much of it or something like store bought pizza which has that combination of tons of sugar and tons of salt... honestly, I can't stand it. If we do get some (rarely) I can only stomach one piece, then I need some veggies and rice to get rid of all the extreme tastes in my mouth.

Unless we have won the genetic lottery, we have to eat well to live long, or at least to have a decent quality of life if we do last long. And even then, it's all random, eh? The dice rolls one way and we live a long life, it rolls the other and we get cancer and die despite otherwise being healthy. At any rate, I'm hoping my eating will help me get that. I hope you can get it on track too!

I actually love salads and stuff. I just don't care for Kale much. Hoepfully the dice rolls the right way for both of us and its not snake eyes.

Always good to focus on taking care of your heath. I need to do it more as well, but living to a ripe old age isn't too likely for me thanks to the COVID vaccine. The damage it did means I probably won't make it to 80, but I'm not dead yet!

I haven't had any ill effects of the vaccine...yet. I do know i haven't had COVID yet and dont wish to as it would throw me for a big loop since Ive got lung problems.

Hell, you will make it. Just be stubborn and do it to piss off the naysayers, LOL.

Thanks. Just wish I had more oomph sometimes so I could engage more.

We hear you. It can be tough to keep up the energy for constant engagement. Keep up the good work!

It's good to see you making wise decisions about your health. When I had a sit-down job at Verizon, I blew up in weight. A wise tip from a friend led me to replace soda (which was making me fat), with lightly flavored water, and then just ice-cold spring water. Replace ice cream with first; frozen yogurt, then fruit yogurt, then plain greek yogurt with a granola topping.

See how we're stepping down SLOWLY over time?

I just got this watch (not an Apple one, yet) with a built-in GPS that announces how far I've walkked, calories burned, goals met, and warns me if my heart rate exceeds the norm and reminds me to ease up a bit. I love this thing, and it's nice to see my progress on a daily basis. It gives me a fun excuse to get away from the keyboard for a bit and walk around.

Thats a neat way to approach it.

What watch is it because I have been looking at some myself. I need one that monitors heart rate and counts steps. Currently I have this cheap little fitbit thing and it stopped montioring my heart rate.

The version that I have is the Amaztim M3 Ultra Military Smart Watch. There's a similar model called the Kospet Tank M3 Ultra. Both have GPS built-in and AMOLED screens (I only get watches with those kind of screens now, I will never go back to a regular "HD" screen). This is a big, bright watch, and since I have large hands, It's perfect for me. Here's a video of the Kospet Model (mine looks exactly the same):

I’ll check them out. Thanks

It is a good goal in your mind! I think it is something like that for me but it depends a lot of how I will reach that age… neurodgenerative diseases is something that can just jump in front of us and I wouldnt be happy with that

Yeah, it is a lofty goal, but worth shooting for.

Greetings @coinjoe

Sounds like a plan....and a good one at that.

Kind Regards,

Bleujay

You know what they say about plans though.

Indeed I do. ^__^

The one I know is ...'We can make plans...but plans change.'

However ...what I like best....is 'God knows best.'

I like 'We make plans and God laughs'.

Yes..indeed He does...^__^
