Celebrating the Pastor's Birthday - Panama

in Weekend Experiences3 months ago (edited)

Today after church, we celebrated the pastor's birthday. After the service, the kids sang a song and each gave him a little birthday card they had made for him.

Then he went to the front and we sang Happy Birthday to him with his cake. We sang in Spanish and then in English.

They had some little firework sparkler candles for his cake that took a little while to get started. He even had to light one himself with a piece of paper that then caught on fire.

In the past we have had a surprise party for the pastor one Sunday and the next service we have a party for his wife. Their birthdays are within a few days of each other. And their two sons' birthdays are also within the next few days and weeks!

This time they forgot to remind us it was his birthday, so I guess the surprise was for us. It was especially a surprise for our family because we were supposed to head to another friend's birthday party as soon as the service was over. Instead we got to stick around and have cake.

The surprise this year was for his wife, Mary. The pastor, Roderick, has been planning a little vacation for this starting this month. They told her today about it and told her that she is leaving tomorrow!

He told me they are going to spend 3 nights in Panama City and then go to the interior of the country for some more time. He wasn't sure how long they'd be away. The gift from his son was a new tie and $200 to spend on their trip. That's a pretty big gift! Afterward, the whole congregation got chips, cake, and drinks. It was a fun little celebration with our Panamanian church!
