The Abbey: Our family house not far from the Loire valley.

in LeoFinance4 days ago

In 1963, my parents already had 10 children. To find places to spend vacations for the whole family that were not too expensive was not easy. One of my father's cousins lived with his family and his mother in a small castle in the Loire valley: the Château du Lathan.

My parents asked my uncle if we could spend vacations in the part of the castle that was not used. So, we started to spend a month there, for several years.

Later, my parents bought a big house nearby, originally a convent of nuns, built at the end of the XIIth century. In my family, it is known as "L'Abbaye du Grand Saint-Denis" (The Abbey of the Great Saint-Denis).

The house has been extensively modified over the centuries after it had ceased to be a convent.

The left part was the church of the convent. There are still some fragments of frescoes that were painted in the XIIth or XIIth century.

Here is the back of the house with the entrance on the road named "Route du Grand Saint-Denis" (Road of the Great Saint-Denis).

The "Grand Saint-Denis" is made of three houses: a farmhouse, the Abbey, and a third house in the back of the Abbey.

My father planted several trees in the 1960s. Some of them are now very tall, even taller than the house.

There are three levels in the house: the ground floor, the upper floor, and the attic.

On the ground floor, we find the dining room, the kitchen, the living room, and a half bathroom.

In the dining room, there is a big fireplace that is now rarely used.

On the right of the fireplace, you can see a small statue of a cephalophore, which is a martyr who has been decapitated and is carrying his head, that my father bought a long time ago. According to the legend, Denis of Paris, who became Saint-Denis, was the first known cephalophore.

In the living room, we can see the pictures of my father, my mother, and my sister Brigitte who died of breast cancer at the age of 43.

On the upper floor, there are five bedrooms, a toilet, and a bathroom with a bathtub.

In the attic, there were 7 bedrooms. Because the attic was not insulated, it was very cold in winter and very hot in summer.

As there are not many guests in the house, we have decided to insulate the attic and build two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a large dormitory with 6 to eight beds.

This summer, the work has started.

Here is the larger part of the attic in its present state.

And here is the other part, with the insulation that will be put in soon.

I spent 3 days at the Abbey, where my eldest brother has lived alone since 1998.

On September 27th, I went to visit my youngest sister Nicole, who lives near Paris. I spent the night in her house, then on the 28 I flew to Canada. Once again, there were multiple delays, and the duration of the trip from door to door was more than 20 hours.

Wow, that is a really big place. Since the attic is not insulated before, I'm guessing you shared rooms in the upper floor when you were all still living there?

No, some of us, including me, were sleeping in the bedrooms in the attic. We had electric radiator in winter, and we had to suffer the heat in summer.

Oh, that sounds terrible. It's a shame you weren't able to put the insulation back then.

Greetings @vcelier ,

What an interesting, vibrant story with these intriguing photographs.

The task before you is one that will result in such a lovely part of the house...hope you will keep us posted with your progress.

Kind Regards,

Bleujay

What struck me most about your house were the ancient frescoes on the walls. This is very rare. Holy place.

The frescoes are in bad shape, but it is still amazing that you can see some fragments that are 800 years old.

The house is big and surrounded by greenery. It must be great time you spent there with family..

The house is big but considering that yours was a large family, it was the best choice your parents made. Very impressive!

It must have been a fun holiday with so many people. It's a beautiful place and those trees give it a special charm.

It must have been a fun holiday with so many people.

Yes, we had fun, my brothers and sisters and me at the Abbey.

The farm next door was still active, and my younger siblings were at the farm all the time.

You are absolutely right, in the old days it was difficult to find places that were less expensive to travel to. Your old house, where your parents' pictures are, is a very nice place. I was really sorry to hear about your sister who passed away due to breast cancer. Welcome back, I came to your post after a very long time, and you have become active on Hive after quite some time as well. We missed you

I remember you, Abdulmanan.

Glad to know that. Hope you are having a good time mate.

A father has a responsibility to his children and he has this responsibility very quickly all brothers and the way you have told this whole story, this house is very beautiful and has been achieved with great effort. The fact is that trees have many benefits for our health, so we must plant trees.

The good thing is that even today you all live in each other's houses and love each other. I am very sorry to hear that one of your sisters has passed away at the age of 43 and this is a big loss for the family as my mother also passed away at the age of 52.

When the past time is remembered, the heart becomes very sad. It is true that there are trees here in our city which were planted by people, they are now gone but the trees are standing and benefiting the people.

Your brother has been living alone for a long time, why didn't he get married?

Your brother has been living alone for a long time, why didn't he get married?

He was married, but his wife divorced him. As he is a convinced and practising catholic, he never remarried.

When this happens, the man spends his entire life without a woman.

So what I have been working in homestead house, not to big like your nun house, but it is hard to repair it, it usually has a big things to repairs, but the satisfaction after repair it does not have prices, but the maintenance of this could be stressful for people, the problem right now is.

Sorry to know about your parents and your sister Brigitte, by the way your brother alone live here it is so hard, the youngest generation do not give the value that this kind of properties have been to the families.

In my case working in the homestead is so hard, and we have been repairing something and other things appears with a little damage.

Well sr, I love your history about the trees, right now I am do it for my family, I hope the land will give to all members of my family enough wood to do not worrying about spend money in wood to repair the house.
Well 10 child from your parents it could be a lot of child, I am not imaging how were my life with this quantity of boys and girl I could not sleep think how I will getting a lot of food to give food to them.

I remember working on putting in insulation into a Finnish house's attic once, it's quite heavy work. :D

Fortunately, we are not doing it ourselves!

This house is very good and such a big place to have great time with near and dear ones.

Looks great! 👍🏻
