That would be a click of a button on software such as Microsoft Project. However, for many reasons, he could not use proper software at that moment and he had no idea what to do.

If he knew the concept of Critical Path, he'd have been able to determine it regardless of having software available, even if it'd take him longer.
Use all the tools at your disposal to be more efficient but also learn the basics!
