I had never heard of it either so I looked it up and they have a very interesting story!
Apparently, they were the first store that allowed customers to actually walk around the store and grab the goods themselves, instead of handing a list to a clerk and waiting for the clerk to get the goods.
From Wikipedia:
At the time of its founding, grocery stores did not allow customers to gather their own goods. Instead, a customer would give a list of items to a clerk, who would then go through the store, gathering them. This created a greater cost and higher prices. Piggly Wiggly introduced the innovation of allowing customers to go through the store, gathering their goods, thus cutting costs and lowering prices

I did not know that fact either although there is a good chance I end up forgetting.
Would you remind me in 4 or 5 months?

Lol. Why would you want to remember? It died for a reason so I don't think anybody misses it.

It seems they didn't die though! Apparently, they were bought a couple of times and now they are mostly in medium or small cities, but still kicking

Lol. I stand corrected but its true that the big stores like Walmart and others have essentially take the model and made it more successful.

Oh yea, no doubt! That's what usually happens. The big guys take over and the smaller stores get restricted to small towns or more isolated neighborhoods.

hahaha I know right! Yesterday we learned that the distance between genitals and butthole can indicate how fertile one is and today we learned about the store that created the self-service model LOL
Yea, I can remind you no problem :P

That seems like common sense now. People are more likely to buy something they can see and touch. Might as well let people choose than charge them. Otherwise you might not buy something you think you might want.
