It seems they didn't die though! Apparently, they were bought a couple of times and now they are mostly in medium or small cities, but still kicking

Lol. I stand corrected but its true that the big stores like Walmart and others have essentially take the model and made it more successful.

Oh yea, no doubt! That's what usually happens. The big guys take over and the smaller stores get restricted to small towns or more isolated neighborhoods.
