UK: Electric robot submarine fleet to replace fossil fuel ships for clean subsea ops

Named after the Loggerhead sea turtle, its all-electric device autonomously deploys robots for subsea inspection and maintenance.

A Scottish company is planning to build a fleet of uncrewed submarines to tap into the $3 billion subsea services market.

HonuWorx plans to deploy a fleet of 50 electric-powered robotic submarines to service energy assets, including offshore wind projects.

In September, the company achieved a world-first in underwater robotics and unveiled plans for a fleet of uncrewed submarines to tap into the subsea services market.

The firm’s system, named Loggerhead, eliminates the reliance on fossil-fueled surface vessels for ROV launches, significantly reducing the carbon impact of offshore energy activities.

Cleaner offshore solutions
HonuWorx was founded in 2020 with the goal of advancing subsea operations by lowering their costs, risks, and carbon footprint.

The firm’s first system is named after the Loggerhead sea turtle, known for its extensive migrations of nearly 8,000 miles to reach feeding areas.

To transform underwater maintenance operations, Loggerhead is an uncrewed, all-electric subsea inspection and intervention device. Loggerhead acts as a robotic mothership, moving and deploying worker robots to far-off places to do maintenance, inspection, and data collection.
