Where is the Budget for AI Coming From?

A survey of CIOs revealed that 41% plan to fund AI initiatives through net new spending, while 35% will repurpose existing software budgets, and only 6% will use funds from professional services.

#technology #ai

AI for business (enterprise) is going to be very interesting. It is going to be something that we see evolve. Present technology is a bit overhyped in the practical applications so far.

Yea, my employers are investing heavily in setting the foundations for that

Yeah. The overall industry is really seeing some interesting developments. The R&D side is still steady. Applications are still limited and the belief is LLMs will lead to AGI. This isnt the case. That said, they can be very helpful and will likely double human productivity.

The VC tide has gone out. A real innovation wave is now arriving.

After a prolonged period of easy money and inflated valuations, the venture capital bubble is slowly deflating, making it harder for founders to secure funding. This downturn coincides with the emergence of large language models, a groundbreaking technology that is transforming the way knowledge work is done and creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs. As the market adjusts to this new reality, founders who can adapt and find ways to stay relevant will be well-positioned to capitalize on the coming wave of innovation.

Earth has caught a 'second moon,' scientists say

Asteroid 2024 PTS, which usually orbits the Sun as part of a small asteroid belt that follows Earth, should now be orbiting Earth as a second moon. The mini-moon event will end on November 25. These gravitational capture events are quite common. 2024 PTS won't be observable to the average skywatcher. After its brief stay around Earth, the asteroid will continue to orbit the sun as part of the Arjuna family of asteroids.

Technology

Technology and humanity at the center of companies of the future

How to balance technological advancement with the centrality of people in the corporate environment? It was with this reflection that the panel “The impact on companies and technological transformation” began, part of the Imersão Indústria program, an event held by FIEMG, this Tuesday, October 1st, at Minascentro, in Belo Horizonte.

#newsonleo #technology

On stage, Sofia Trombetta, director of People at ArcelorMittal LATAM and Mining, and Doctor Gustavo Donato, associate professor at Fundação Dom Cabral (FDC) and former dean of Centro Universitário FEI, shared their views on how technology and people should go together to shape the future of organizations.

Donato opened the debate by emphasizing that the evolution of society and professionals is linked to the capacity for constant relearning. According to him, in the coming decades of 2030 and 2040, around 80% of professionals will need to be “lifelong learners“, that is, learning throughout their entire lives, unlearning and relearning as new paradigms present themselves. In this scenario, technology is a fundamental presence. He recommended reading the Future Today Institutes “Tech Trends Report”, released annually at the SXSW festival in the United States, as a tool to understand the main axes of technological transformation, with emphasis on the role of artificial intelligence (AI).

Regarding AI, the professor-doctor is already redesigning areas such as personalized health, climate and energy, mobility, robotics and logistics. However, he warned about the decreasing use of people's “natural intelligence”. “My big fear is that we are using natural intelligence less,” he said, highlighting that excessive technological stimuli has led to a loss of focus, increased anxiety and a “knowledge collapse” phenomenon. He also brought up the concept of the “nexialist” — a professional of the future who creates connections between non-obvious areas of knowledge, being an agent of innovation in complex and interdisciplinary environments.

Sofia Trombetta, in turn, addressed the importance of putting people at the center of this technological transformation process. “Talking about science and technology without talking about people is not possible,” he declared. She highlighted the challenge that organizations face in a context in which four generations are living in the same work environment, which creates “generational chaos”. For Sofia, the role of people management areas is fundamental to ensure that employees can face technological transformation organically and without fear.

The panel at Imersão Indústria highlighted that the future of companies inevitably involves the integration between people and technology. Innovation, according to the speakers, will only be successful if organizations know how to balance the transformative power of artificial intelligence with care for human beings. The challenge is to navigate technological transformation, keeping people at the center, as protagonists of the changes that will shape the organizations of the future.

Imersão Indústria is carried out by FIEMG, SESI and SENAI, with master sponsorship from ArcelorMittal, Codemge, CNI and Vale; master support from SEBRAE; gold sponsorship of Herculano Mineração, Gerdau, Eletrobras, Schneider Eletric; silver sponsorship from Sicoob Credfiemg, Copasa, CBMM, Souza Cruz/BAT Brasil, USIMINAS and Nanum Nanotecnologia; and support from BDMG, Localiza, Bemisa, Sambatec, FAEMG and Fecomércio.

What Sam Altman, Founder of OpenAI, Thinks about the Future of Work

Despite the uncertainties regarding the future of the job market, Sam Altman, billionaire co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, sees a positive scenario ahead. While some jobs lose relevance, Altman believes that the transformations brought about by AI should create new opportunities in the corporate world.

#newsonleo #openai #technology

“I am confident that there will be many jobs, and that many of them will be different from the ones we know today. But there never seems to be a shortage of things to do,” he said during an interview with Chris Hyams, CEO of global jobs platform Indeed, at the Indeed FutureWorks Conference last week. “As the tools change, the result changes too.”

Artificial intelligence, which began to be developed in the 1950s and has been used since the 1980s, gained popularity with ChatGPT, a generative AI chatbot launched by OpenAI in November 2022. Today, the tool has 200 million weekly users, and Brazil is the fourth most used platform in the world rankings. “Our model made a much bigger difference than we imagined.”

Among the many impacts of generative AI, jobs stand out. According to research by the IMF (International Monetary Fund), 40% of current positions are expected to be affected by new technology worldwide. This prediction is reinforced by a study by the McKinsey Global Institute, which indicates that by 2030, around 14% of professionals may need to change careers due to digitalization, robotics and advances in AI. “I think it will be amazing when AI can do my job better, but I've been doing this for a while and at least I got to enjoy the fun part,” says Sam Altman.

This is not the first time that technology has caused significant changes in the corporate world. Over the years, previous innovations have also raised similar concerns in the job market. “When I was at school, people said that programming would kill a lot of jobs,” says the CEO. “In the end, it eliminated some functions, but created many other opportunities”

One of the differences to the current scenario is the speed of change. Over the past eight years, the search for professionals with AI skills has grown 323%, according to a report this year by Microsoft and LinkedIn, which surveyed 31,000 people in 31 countries, including Brazil.

It may seem difficult to keep up with the frenetic pace of AI advances, but the secret is learning how to use these new tools to your advantage. “You need to feel very comfortable with them, because we don’t know exactly what the jobs of the future will look like.”

#newsonleo #google #technology #brasil #bets

Pretty cool. I do not think it real although it would be cool if it was.

There are some robots created by China that seem like a lie, but we cannot deny that robots are advancing very quickly too.

There is a lot of misleading going on. That said, there are some things that are real.

Sizing up the market right now is senseless to me. I just look for the overall progress. The TAM is enormous so I have no problem believing there will be a ton of winners.

You said something really interesting. There are things that we don't know exactly if they are actually real or not.

I recently saw a short on the internet of a woman holding a huge, really big owl and it left everyone wondering if this species really exists or was made by AI.

If today there are already many questions about whether it is true or not, imagine the near future. It will be very difficult to tell if something is real.

People do not believe things people post online. The joke I read it on the Internet so it is true.

Now you cant trust your eyes.

Yes it is true. The internet can show us different paths, we just need to seek the truth.

This is the biggest convergence in human history:

  • food
  • energy
  • transportation
  • labor

We are going to see massive disruption over the next 10 years. It is going to be explosive.

The question is how do we get from where we are now to that point?

Art Of Abstraction – Charting The Next Evolution Of The Web3 Ecosystem

From conversations with many industry experts on blockchain layers and their challenges and opportunities, one theme kept emerging – abstraction.

A renewed focus on abstracting technology away from the user experience would clear a path to ... [+] adoption

#web3 #technology #blockchain

The increasingly multilayered nature of the blockchain ecosystem has created a growth spurt in user activity and liquidity, but the challenges it throws up are also seemingly intractable. Scalability requires more platforms to increase bandwidth, yet interoperability barriers and the complexity of a crowded ecosystem risk constraining forward-looking innovation. How can developers focus on building user-friendly apps that meet real-world needs rather than chasing the tail of the newest problem caused by the latest solution?

Having consulted many industry experts on blockchain layers and their challenges and opportunities, one theme kept emerging – abstraction.

Alex Mizrahi, CTO and Co-Founder of relational data blockchain Chromia, explains the challenge:

“Non-crypto users are used to certain ‘nice’ features, like account recovery and being able to log in using a memorable password. The industry has made progress in making the Web3 experience more user-friendly, but I think there is still room for improvement when it comes to account abstraction. Along with gas-free transactions, this would alleviate the complexity and poor UX that is ‘baked in’ to the Web3 experience.”

Account abstraction broadly describes features that remove the need for users to manage their own private keys for secure self-custody of assets, such as those mentioned by Mizrahi above. The fragmentation challenges of a multilayered ecosystem can compound the complexity of self-custody if users need to manage multiple accounts and keys. Account abstraction would allow users to interact with their accounts more naturally and seamlessly with features such as delegated access, account recovery, and more.

Palmer Luckey: Every country needs a 'warrior class' excited to enact 'violence on others in pursuit of good aims'

Palmer Luckey raged against America’s adversaries, endorsed completely autonomous weapons, and hinted at an Anduril IPO.

#technolgoy #ipo

Palmer Luckey, the founder of Anduril industries, a defense technology company, recently gave an hour-long conversation at Pepperdine University, where he discussed his views on war, autonomous weapons, and the future of his company.

Luckey began by stating that societies need a "warrior class" that is enthusiastic about using violence to achieve good aims. He believes that he and others like him are necessary to create tools of violence to preserve freedom. He also mentioned that he has no hesitation about building weapons and that Anduril is already working on autonomous weapons.

Luckey then discussed the early hours of the war in Ukraine and how Anduril could have made a big impact. He claimed that he first met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2019 and that Ukraine had asked to acquire some of Anduril's border control technology. However, the State Department was not keen on Ukraine at the time, and Anduril did not provide the technology until later in the war.

Luckey also discussed the importance of AI development and how it is being hindered by a "shadow campaign" being waged by western countries' adversaries in the United Nations. He believes that the development of autonomous weapons is necessary and that the US government's reluctance to purchase them is misguided.

Luckey also hinted at Anduril's desire to eventually go public, citing the difficulty of competing with government-backed companies like Lockheed Martin. He also mentioned that people have floated the possibility of Anduril being acquired, but he is hesitant to repeat the experience of being pushed out of Facebook after selling his previous startup, Oculus.

Finally, Luckey declined a gift of a leather-bound collection of "The Lord of the Rings" because he cannot fit it on his motorcycle.

Overall, Luckey's views on war, autonomous weapons, and the future of his company are controversial and have sparked debate.

EU's DSA enforcers send more questions to Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube about AI risks

On Wednesday, the European Union requested more information from Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube about their respective algorithms for content

#newsonleo #eu #socialmedia #technology #ai

EU Requests More Information from Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube on Algorithmic Content Recommendation

The European Union has sent requests for information (RFI) to Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube, asking for more details about the design and functioning of their algorithms used for content recommendation. The move is part of the bloc's efforts to ensure compliance with the digital Services Act (DSA), a new online governance rulebook that aims to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in content recommendation.

The EU's online governance framework, which came into effect in late summer, requires very large online platforms (VLOPs) like Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube to identify and mitigate risks associated with their use of AI-based content recommendation tools. The law stipulates that these platforms must take action to prevent negative impacts on users' mental health, civic discourse, and the dissemination of harmful content.

The Commission's latest RFIs focus on the algorithms used by the three social media platforms to recommend content to their users. The EU is seeking detailed information on the AI-based parameters used to make these recommendations, as well as how these algorithms play a role in amplifying systemic risks, including:

  1. Risks related to the electoral process and civic discourse
  2. Users' mental well-being, including addictive behavior and content "rabbit holes"
  3. The protection of minors
  4. The spread of illegal content, such as promoting illegal drugs and hate speech

The commission is also asking Snapchat and YouTube to provide information on their measures to mitigate the potential influence of their recommender systems on the spread of illegal content. For TikTok, the EU is seeking more detail on anti-manipulation measures deployed to prevent malicious actors from gaming the platform to spread harmful content.

The EU's concerns about the potential negative impacts of algorithmic content recommendation are not new. In February, the bloc opened a formal investigation into TikTok's DSA compliance, citing concerns about the platform's approach to minor protection, addictive design, and the risk management of harmful content. That investigation is ongoing.

The Commission has given the three social media platforms until November 15 to provide the requested information. The responses will inform any next steps, including potentially opening formal investigations.

What's at Stake

The EU's efforts to regulate algorithmic content recommendation are aimed at preventing the spread of harmful content, protecting users' mental health, and promoting a healthy online environment. The bloc's online governance framework contains tough penalties for violations, including fines of up to 6% of global annual turnover.

The stakes are high for the three social media platforms, which have been given until November 15 to provide the requested information. Failure to comply with the EU's requests could result in formal investigations, fines, and reputational damage.

What's Next

The Commission's latest RFIs are part of its ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with the DSA. The bloc has already sent several requests for information to the three social media platforms, including questions about election risks, child safeguarding issues, and content risks related to the Israel-Hamas war.

The EU's investigation into TikTok's DSA compliance is ongoing, and the bloc has yet to conclude any of the several probes it has open on larger platforms. However, in July, the Commission put out preliminary findings related to some of its investigations on X, saying it suspects the social network of breaching the DSA's rules on dark pattern design, providing data access to researchers, and ad transparency.

As the EU continues to scrutinize the algorithms used by social media platforms, it's clear that the stakes are high for these companies. The bloc's efforts to regulate algorithmic content recommendation are aimed at promoting a healthy online environment, protecting users' mental health, and preventing the spread of harmful content.

Google vs. DOJ: Monopoly Showdown

The Department of Justice just finished a major trial, accusing Google of monopolizing the ad tech market. Google fought back, saying the DOJ doesn't understand the complexities of advertising and is unfairly cutting up the market. They also argue that social media is a bigger ad competitor that the DOJ is overlooking. The trial's next big moment? Closing arguments on November 25. Stay tuned to see how this tech battle wraps up!

intelligence](https://inleo.io/@leoglossary/leoglossary-artificial-intelligence) startup, is reportedly preparing to close a $6.5 billion funding round that could value the company at $150 billion. The funding round is being led by Thrive capital, and tech giants Microsoft and NVIDIA are also in talks to participate.

Apple, which has a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its iPhone operating system, recently dropped out of talks to invest in the company.

As OpenAI seeks investors for its massive funding round, the company is also considering restructuring its non-profit status to attract investors. This move would allow the company to take on more debt and potentially increase its valuation.

However, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman has reportedly told employees that he does not plan to receive a significant equity stake in the company. During a meeting with Altman and OpenAI's CFO Sarah Friar, the leaders told employees that investors are concerned about Altman's lack of equity in the company.

Here are the companies that are expected to invest in OpenAI's $6.5 billion funding round:

  1. Thrive Capital (leading the round)
  2. Microsoft (MSFT)

Walmart, Ikea, and Home Depot are among the major companies that'll be affected by the port strike

A prolonged strike could threaten supplies of major companies in the retail, automotive, and manufacturing industries

A massive dockworkers strike could impact cargo movement of leading importers operating on the East Coast and Gulf ports, including Walmart and General Motors according to trade data aggregator Import Genius.

If no agreement is reached, several terminals at these ports could cease operations, affecting products shipped in containers and threatening the global supply chain. This could eventually increase the prices of commodities across almost all industries — from retail and automotive to manufacturing.

Walmart, Ikea, General Motors and First Solar a climate tech company, are among the leading importers at 14 major ports that could be impacted by the strike, according to the data provided by Import Genius.

The data consists of digital records with shipper and product details for containers at key ports, namely New York/New Jersey, Baltimore, Savannah, Ga., Houston, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and New Orleans.

First Solar topped the list with imports of nearly 70,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), followed by General Motors with at least 62,500.

Tire companies such as Goodyear, Michelin, and Continental Tire rely on East Coast ports for supplies and are among the tOP importers at the affected ports. Other top importers across the selected ports include Walmart, LG electronics, Bob’s Furniture, Samsung, Home Depot, and Hyundai.

The top importers at New York and New Jersey, the largest port on the East Coast, included General Motors and Glovis America LG. At Baltimore, Ikea and Bob’s Furniture were the top two importers, while the largest port in the South, Savannah, has Hanwha Q Cells — a company that makes solar cell components — as its largest importer. Port of Virginia has Walmart and Ikea as leading importers.

The data provided by Import Genius, however, does not include any shipments handled by third party logistics companies nor does it include shipments where the consignee has filed a request for anonymity with U.S. customs.

What experts and leaders are saying
In a customer advisory on Sept. 26, Christian Roeloffs, co-founder and CEO of container xChange said, “The strike could push the container trade into chaos, with ripple effects that potentially will disrupt supply chains well. The congestion and delays at these major ports will severely impact the availability of containers, increase costs, and disrupt schedules.”

Ocean carriers such as Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, and other carriers have already announced surcharges for port strike disruptions. Effective Oct. 21, Denmark-based carrier Maersk is implementing a surcharge on the impacted ports, ranging from $1,500 for a 20-foot container to $3,780 for a 45-foot container.

“This surcharge is necessary to cover the higher operational costs that will be incurred due to the service disruptions, ensuring the sustainability of our services and ongoing support for your supply chain requirements,” Maersk said.

CMA CGM will start charging from Oct. 11, followed by Hapag-Lloyd on Oct. 18.

The U.S. Department of transportation is closely monitoring attempts that could raise prices. In a statement released on Oct. 1, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called on ocean carriers to withdraw surcharges. “No one should exploit a disruption for profit, especially at a time when whole regions of the country are recovering from Hurricane Helene,” the statement read.

“With a strike nOW in place at all East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, NRF is urging President Biden to intervene and use all necessary tools, including the Taft-Hartley Act, to immediately resume the flow of cargo at these essential ports and get the negotiating parties back to the table,” Jonathan Gold, the vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation (NRF), told Quartz in a statement.

The last time a president invoked the Taft-Hartley Act was during the West Coast port lockout in 2002 under President George W. Bush. The law allows the President to intervene in labor disputes that pose a risk to national security or public safety, by enforcing an 80-day cooling-off period. This requires workers to return to their jobs while negotiations continue.

“This is a critical time for retailers and other businesses ahead of the holiday season. The longer this disruption lasts, the more harm it will cause to the economy and the millions of businesses, workers and consumers who rely on the seamless flow of goods, both imports and exports, through the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports,” said Gold.

Reinforcement learning is crucial. This means engaging with synthetic data and providing human feedback is essential.

Coinbase executive hopes for better cryptocurrency regulations after the election

Shan Aggarwal discussed the state of crypto at Messari's Mainnet conference

With less than 35 days until the U.S. presidential election, the crypto industry seems to be hoping for more favorable regulations in the near future.

At Messari’s annual mainnet conference in New York City, Shan Aggarwal, the vice president of corporate and business development at cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Ventures, touched on the industry’s regulatory uncertainties. “We’re hoping for the best,” he said in an exclusive interview with Quartz.

His remarks highlight the sector’s anticipation that the coming election could lead to clearer, more supportive legislation.

“The current SEC, it’s hard to go down from here,” Aggarwal said. “[Gary Gensler] has taken a regulation-by-enforcement approach towards the entire crypto industry, including Coinbase.”

Aggarwal is scheduled to speak at the conference Wednesday, where he will discuss Coinbase’s investments, mergers, and acquisitions over the years, as well as its future strategic direction.

This year, Coinbase partnered with traditional financial giants such as BlackRock to offer a platform for the tokenization of funds. Of that collaboration, Aggarwal said, “Coinbase acts as the bridge between traditional finance and crypto that touches different customer segments including retail customers, institutions, businesses.”

Mainnet conference is about the future of crypto
Messari is a leading provider of market intelligence for the crypto and Web3 sectors. Its three-day conference brings together prominent crypto leaders, investors, and industry professionals to explore the rising trend of tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs) and integrating traditional financial instruments on blockchain — a signal of decentralized technologies moving toward mainstream adoption.

This year, Messari made headlines when CEO Ryan Selkis resigned after a series of controversial tweets about U.S. immigrants, violence toward Trump opponents, and civil war.

During 2021’s Mainnet event, the SEC served two subpoenas to the speaker of the event, Terraform Labs founder and then-CEO Do Kwon. Kwon, once a crypto king, was arrested in March 2023 for forging travel documents while trying to flee Montenegro. He is currently awaiting extradition to either the U.S. or South Korea, where he faces potential charges.

Messari launches AI-powered assistant for crypto
At this year’s conference, Messari introduced Messari Copilot, an AI assistant designed for the crypto industry. This tool delivers text-based answers to user queries based on Messari’s research and data, providing a comprehensive view of the crypto landscape.
