In the 1980s, the mobile phone was a tool (toy) for the wealthy. These phones were expensive and the service even worse. On top of that, the service was spotty, with deadzones being the norm.
Today, billions of people across the globe have these devices. We are no longer dealing with phones, since they are basically mini computers. These are more powerful than the Nasa computers during some of their early missions.
This is one example of why standards of living keep increasing.

A 90% drop in price. How come people do not talk about that in the inflation discussion?
When mobile phones first landed in Nigeria around the year 2000, one could use his two salaries to get the line. And then work for another three months to acquire the handset 🤣🤣
And the service problem was spotty at best.
That is how technology operates: it is clunky and expensive to start, available only to the wealthy. Over time, the service (or product) improves and prices drop.
At some point, it becomes ubitquitous.

Coverage is still not good in the UK, although it's getting. At my previous house, I had to climb into the attic to get a signal.
