20% Hybrid

in LeoFinance3 years ago

I was asked an interesting series of questions today by a friend who is questioning not only their career, but also the way they approach life. It spawned a drawn out conversation that I think is going to carry on for months ahead, but they were also asking me about why I got into crypto, what keeps me engaged with it and where I see it heading - which was refreshing, since most people are only interested in the "money" side of it.

One thing that did come up was the growing realization by people that they want to enjoy their work more, but still want the stability of being an employee, which doesn't always offer the most enjoyable tasks. However, with the changing world, economy and technology, those with valuable skills are increasingly being presented options to take a hybrid approach to their work. This allows them to take a "part-time" approach to their work as an employee where for example (what I modeled for my friend), was where they could work 80/20, four days as an employee, one day as self-employed.

This is similar to the "20-percent time" that has been introduced in some companies over the last decade, but the difference is that the work done isn't owned by the company, it is owned by the one doing it. OF course, this comes at a 20% cost of employee income too, so a person has to either be comfortable enough to absorb the cost or, willing to actually earn during that day.

However, as I was explaining today, when it comes to wellbeing, having that day of personally valuable work makes the other four days far more bearable, even enjoyable. This also has the added benefit of potentially distributing income streams, making a person (assuming the same amount is earned in that day) 20% less reliant on the employed work, with an option to expand the self-employed if wanted, or needed.

My friend actually has a huge benefit in this, as she already has a sound investment portfolio and perhaps more importantly, a high level of skill in a non-competing industry than what they are in now. On top of this, what they are able to bring to the table is a support function that would help other people doing similar improve their own competitiveness by developing their skill set and, they are very good at delivering this and have a track-record of results.

In a world that is going to see more "hybrid" work and distributed personal revenue streams, there is a lot of potential for those who can service the bourgeoning hustle economy, as more people take part. This means that rather than going it alone to start a new business, many skilled (and unskilled) are going to be starting their own hybrid approaches also, and are therefore more inclined to use services and people who understand them and where they are coming from. The large corporations are going to provide en masse, but that is going to get average results across the board - so they are still going to need to build market differentiation, as an individual.

There is another factor that will increase the drive to do this, as in time businesses are going to look to reduce the time that people are working for them and perhaps be encouraged to, as unemployment rises. This means that for every four people who choose to work four days of the week, another four-day employee can be hired. In a global business, this can be valuable for network distribution also, but it is valuable for governments to maintain stability, because working people are happier people - despite worker protestations to the contrary.

Now of course, most of us here on Hive are no stranger to this, since many are already taking a hybrid work approach, even though for example myself, I am still working 5 days a week and more, as I have a small business too. But, my little "crypto side-hustle" has the flexibility to do at anytime, seven days a week and, the diversity to continually keep me engaged and active, as well as the various reward mechanisms of social and financial aspects that incentivize participation.

What I am really looking forward to is a world where while people can't do only what they love, they are able to spend some of their time doing a bit of what they love for reward. This encourages them to improve and expand their skillsets and as such, end up being "better off" for it, as even though they might not earn a huge amount from it, their sense of self and quality of life experience can improve dramatically.

My friend uses her skills at every possible opportunity now, taking reward from the delivery of it socially, but I think they are starting to see what we see, that the coming economy is going to empower her to be her best, and pay her for it.

What does the world look like if people truly did what they loved, even if it was only for 20% of the time?

I wish I can live , earn money and value without having to go through the college life , get a good job and work from 9-5 style . That’s is why i love the crypto currency. We all should be able to earn and decide if we want to be employees or not.

In my opinion, don't pass up the opportunity to learn tradeable skills - school can be part of that. Relying on crypto alone would be a dangerous position for most people, especially if needing other people to provide the reward.

20% would be more than enough I would say, for many people.

Me for instance, while working in the family business and helping out my father is still priority number one. I take PeakD/Hive just as seriously I would say. Can't even believe it has already been 3 months for me here on this platform. It is all fairly new to me, Hive/Crypto. Yet I'm still out here everyday, full of curiosity, trying to learn and interact.

At the moment things seem quite balanced, the last 2 years have surely changed things. I surely don't mind though, I've gotten quite used to this lifestyle.

If you stick with it, I reckon it might take you to some places you never thought it would - not just financially, but in the way you see the world.

My plans are long-term for sure brother, will be trying my level best. I thank you for the advice, really appreciate it. 🥃

I'd love for there to be a day when I am retired from my full time job and I can just do what I am doing now on Hive from home as a way to make a little bit of extra money each day. That would be awesome.

It would be the dream! Though to be honest, I wouldn't mind doing a few days a week somewhere too, as being home all the time makes it hard to have meaningful conversations with "random" people like I do near daily at work :)

I suck at small talk so I am more than happy being home alone while my wife works!

It is a "skill" that is valuable, though I don't do it that well. I am far better at being short on pleasantries and diving into the depths :) So much content available through a broad reference group. I think one of the reasons many people struggle for topics and stories is that they don't surround themselves with random potential - their experience is "curated" through a remote and a search bar.

I am already on HIVE in the spare time of me at work. Fours days business work, and one day work for yourself, perhaps on HIVE, would be great. I think that there is already four days work in UAE.

Some places already have started implementing it. Some Swedish companies have trialled it have found that they can still keep productivity, as people are more effective per hour, even though working less.

Remote working is accepted in the world. Perhaps, the next phase is working for four days.

I think many factors of employment are going to change based on culture shifts, as well as technological innovation.

most of us here on Hive are no stranger to this, since many are already taking a hybrid work approach, even though for example myself, I am still working 5 days a week and more, as I have a small business too.

It is amazing to see people with their personal side hustle apart from crypto but they are still fully active in the Crypto world.

It takes a fair amount of energy, but I feel it is worth it.

I think the world be a lot bearable place to be :)
As you said in the post, my involvement on Hive and many other projects in the crypto space has made my work less stressful. I always look forward to the engagement I will have on Hive and other similar ecosystems. I am Hybrid by theme but I am yet to make that Hybrid work model. I understand side hustle. It will make more time for me to make my work Hybrid.

I am Hybrid by theme but I am yet to make that Hybrid work model.

Was talking about this yesterday too. For me, it took a couple years before I made the shift to add more work into my own model. Part of it was for the security of employed work, part for the product of the company and part, because there is so much value in building network. Going to work each day and interacting with a wide variety of people with broad range skills, means always having interesting conversations and experiences :)

When you are able to do what you love, you re happier and I believe more productive contributor to the whole. Fear stops many. Fear like the lack of money or resources to make it happen long term. If folks chose to not live beyond their means, I believe for more folks, their dreams world materialize. When you decide to take the plunge, you often taste the sweet joy of real freedom.

Fear like the lack of money or resources to make it happen long term.

THis came up today too. Also, when people are "desperate" they are always going to feel the pressure and it is a bad place to negotiate from.

Having a work and using crypto as side hustle is great but doing what you love on hive and also earning crypto a reward is great.
