It runs in the background as long as the app is active. At least, that's the experience that I have on my phone.

The apps for making $SWEAT doesn't have to be active. When I first tried Actifit, I was expecting something similar, but I lost many steps due to the setup the app has and stopped using it again. I just use the tools for minting $SWEAT now.
Not sure if it's too late to get into that token though, it takes a bit more than 7k steps to mint 1 $SWEAT now.
