The current Splinterlands season ends in under 24 hours and next season will introduce some big changes to the reward system.
What is Splinterlands?
Splinterlands (also known as Steemmonsters) is a digital card game created by @aggroed and @yabapmatt. Early game release has launched and prizes are already up for grabs. You can start playing or investing in Splinterlands today by clicking here.
GSThe Splinterlands team has decided (for good reasons) to adjust how rewards are handed out in our daily quests. To slow down the rate in which new Reward Cards are introduced in the game the new Reward system is going to introduce LOOT Chests.
"Loot chests" will contain reward cards in addition to other things such as DEC and potions. The exact contents of the chests will be randomly determined, and the higher your league, the higher level chest you will receive with proportionally more rewards inside.
New Rewards cards will still get introduced but with the addition of earning other stuff in our daily rewards the rate in which cards are introduced will be reduced. This is a positive as currently cards are being introduced at a rapid rate.
The contents of each loot chest will be randomly determined (based on unpredictable blockchain data, as always), the average total value of the items should be very similar to the average value of the reward cards you would have received previously.
We don't lose any value. The over all average USD worth of rewards you receive today in Novice/Bronze/Silver/Diamond and Champion doesn't change. What changes is what those rewards will be.
This change is scheduled to go into effect on Tuesday, February 4th, at around 9 am - 12 pm EST.
This is the last season in which anyone will get all Reward Cards in their season end rewards so hit those ranked matches to climb as high as you can in this seasons league rankings. To read the official announcement click on this highlighted area.

I actually think that the loot box system will be better for the game overall.
I have seen quite a few people saying that they don't like that idea, but I just guess they are bot owners :D
Loot boxes do have a more gaming feel to them.
I wonder how players will react to earning card skins in them?
Well I know I will be hella mad the first few times I get a skin, since I find most skins uglier than normal ones and they are near worthless at the moment.
But I am sure I will get used to it. Afterall these skins need to run out at some point, and if nobody is buying them then it's the only option I feel like
I'm not looking forward to the skins either.
Hopefully their will be a market for them for those of us wanting to sell.

I think it is good that is will slow down the rate it gives the cards out. Bonus to receive potion charges for the potential to get some other good things, plus DEC is handy like mentioned to get cards you want. Sure reward cards are good for the whole lot but the loot chest could be better overall.
Hmmm...not sure how I feel about that, but they’re making the change so I suppose it doesn’t make any difference. Kinda’ disappointed actually, quest rewards are basically the only way to level those cards (already spent enough fiat on the game).
Maybe it will be a wash in that you can use the DEC rewards to buy cards, but then there’s less supply and everyone else trying as well and they will be too expensive.
I suppose we should just be happy we earn something for playing.

The above is what I was thinking as well. Getting the DEC might be better since then you can pick what card to purchase but who knows how all this will play out, I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I think the important thing for me is sustainability and that like the mentioned the value of the rewards you receive will relatively be the same.
It is a hard decision to make but I think they're trying hard to carry everyone along. It ain't easy taking management decisions especially when a lot hings on the reaction of players.
We are earning for playing and I think that in itself is great. We just have to wait and see how things pan out.
I think the game is evolving for the better and for future expansion which to me is important too.

Im looking forward to the change.
It' ll be interesting to see if the changes breath life into the card skins market as currently the skins are highly underutilized. I like the adjustment to make reward cards introduction slow down but I wonder how introducing DEC in the loot boxes will affect the USD value of DEC.
