Somebody on Twitter posted a screenshot of Deepseek refusing to discuss Tiananmen Square. But if it really is open source, somebody’s bound to modify that part of its coding.

That was me. Ironically, I wasn't necessarily trying to trip it up. I was trying to ascertain whether China was open to all information as was argued to me by someone on X. I figured if I asked Grok, it would be disregarded as western propaganda so I figured deepseek would probably give me the same answer which I know to be true. I was surprised by the results.
Weirdly, they either changed the site or I haven't been able to find the same site again to replicate it. Now when I go to that site I am asked to sign in which I won't do.
I think any time anything is made open source or given away for free, society benefits as a whole. I can acknowledge China's commitment to apparent censorship and still applaud the open sourcing of the tech. I don't know if I'd consider them a "David" though. Being the most populous nation and a world superpower, they have definite advantages.
ETA: Also, it didn't necessarily refuse to discuss it. It just threw an error.
I think I saw a different tweet. Pretty sure that in the one I saw, DeepSeek flat out refused.
A lot of people seem to be asking it similar questions. Here’s one I ran across today:
Aww man. I guess I'm not as famous as I hoped 😅😂🤣.
Yeah I mean it only makes sense that a Chinese company would censor the classic stuff that China has always censored. But exactly it will be interesting if some random country or company just clones it and jailbreaks it in unexpected ways.
An efficient solution like this also makes it easier for individuals to clone the code.
We could never afford an AI that knows all the things but we could train it to know a very specific thing... like it could be an expert on programming only or video editing only.
Once something that like that happens it's possible we could link these individual expert bots together on a crypto network and they would share information with each other. Then that network has access to all the info and could even arguably be better than a competitor.
