A noobs view of Hive - three months in

in LeoFinance3 years ago

I've been here on Hive since October 2021 and I've spent the time exploring the blockchain and the numerous projects built upon it and I thought I would do a post about some of the games and earning opportunities that I've found that may be of use to newer community members, you never know it may even be of use to some people who have been here for a while.

First and foremost though I have to say what a fantastic little ecosystem this is, while I'm not the biggest poster I read a lot on here and its obvious that a lot of you care deeply about it and work hard on maintaining/developing apps and tokens that benefit the whole community...kudos for that. Also the way that the community dealt with the Justin Sun situation is quite incredible and definitely worthy of being made into a film.

Now I'm a big gamer and it was Splinterlands that initially led me here so I'll start off with some of the games that I've been playing and a couple of tips that may be of use to newer players.

Games

Splinterlands

My sexy GF collection

I think its pretty safe to say anyone who has been active on the blockchain has heard of this one, if you haven't gotten involved yet there is no better time to do so than right now with the general sale of Chaos Legion packs ongoing. Of all the games I have played on Hive this one is by far the most strategic however once you learn about correct card ordering and use of relevant skills for rulesets its very fun. I've seen a lot of people on the blockchain complaining about the bad rewards in bronze and lack of earning potential so my tip for this one is buy 5k+ card power now while its cheap, this will allow you to play in bronze 1 and earn enough DEC there to progress to silver 3. Once in silver three you can earn more DEC than your rentals will cost making the game slightly profitable in terms of DEC and you will pretty much get daily reward card drops allowing your CP to grow naturally.

Dcity

My little city slowly getting there

This one is an interesting take on gamified DEFI and involves building up a city with either cards off the market or packs bought in-game, the game pays out its own token SIM based upon your holdings as well as several other tokens depending on the buildings you own. Weed farms pay out the WEED token, breweries pay out the BEER token, you can see where I'm going with this. The game also pays out liquid Hive based upon your SIM holdings (8k+) so its well worth a look. One thing I will say is like Splinterlands to get the most out of this game it will require an initial investment however I only put in about $70 and my city is worth ~$120 with some lucky card pulls so its not a huge amount to get started. I am making 150-200 SIM per day plus a few other tokens. In terms of time to play I check my city twice a day so really casual, check it out.

Rising Star

Took a whole lot of grinding to get here(level 45)

Another idle clicker although this one you can start to play absolutely free!
The game features characters based on real life members of the Hive community and also music made by musicians on Hive which you can purchase or even stake the games currency STARBITS on to earn from future sales! With a ton of side missions, seasonal events and multiple different ways to play the game this one has plenty to keep you occupied and I'm enjoying grinding my way through it. My tip for this one for newer players would be to invest in a few pizzas and some instruments (ideally the same type), these will enable you to play a decent amount of missions a day and keep that ego at bay. Definitely worth al look and it will not take up a huge amount of your time.

Passive earning

There are so many apps and tokens on Hive that I have barely touched the surface although I will discuss the few that i have tried or that I am easing myself into.

Curation

The first passive earning opportunity I want to discuss is curation on Hive and the fact that it is not just Hive that can be earnt, in fact depending on the tags the author has used if you hold staked token corresponding to the communities tagged i.e. LEO and Leofinance then you can also earn some secondary tokens too, I'm currently staking everything I get to increase these rewards and its gotten to the point I have dust from multiple tokens landing in my wallet daily. Also you can automate this process using the HiveVote app which is actually a great way to see content you may not normally come across in your subscribed communities, I allow 10% of my vote power to be used in this way for that reason and so I still have plenty left to manually curate good content I find.

Delegation

If you are not posting or curating but have Hive or certain secondary tokens staked then it may be worth delegating them to someone else to use, certain curators on Hive will actually pay you daily for doing so meaning you can put those tokens to work even if you are not active on the chain at that time. This can be done with staked HIVE, LEO, SPT and ONEUP to name a few and its relatively easy to find curators who offer this service.

Liquidity Pools

Of course I wouldn't be able to talk about passive earnings on Hive with mentioning the liquidity pools on offer to Hive users, these have been pretty profitable to me and in particular the ONEUP pools easily paid out more than 100% of initial investment while I was in them, although I must admit I have recently removed my positions to buy CL packs. One thing to be aware of with Liquidity pools is impermanent loss however its not something I'm personally bothered about as long as the rewards offset any potential losses and I explain why here. How crazy is the SWAP.HIVE:DEC pool lately
NFA just my opinion on the subject.

Dividend/ Drip token

Daily DHedge payout

These are tokens that pay out rewards based on the users holdings with some paying out a single token such as the BXT token paying out liquid HIVE daily, the UTOPIA token paying out weekly HIVE or tokens such as DHedge that pay out small amounts of many different tokens including DHedge itself so its a self growing bag. (who doesn't like that?) I also held some HE Index which worked in a similar manner but that didn't survive the chop for CL card packs and I'm sure there are many, many more out there. Well worth checking out and I plan on stacking a load more DHedge once CL packs sell out.

Mining tokens

While I haven't invested too heavily into these yet as I'm already spread pretty thin across the various projects on the chain they are well worth a mention and can be another way to create those self growing bags. For instance I hold some HUSTLER tokens which mine the COM token, the COM token itself produces LIST tokens which when staked produce COM themselves so its one circle of COM and LIST production that can be increased by increasing the miner aka HUSTLER, its a pretty cool setup even if I am just watching dust grow right now. Another app I've been easing into is the ape mining club which uses the APE token to buy virtual miners and it pays out APE in return with the ROI looking pretty good so far (as always NFA and DYOR).

Conclusion

As you can see I've been pretty busy and I know I've barely touched the surface yet, I'm looking forward to the next three months and beyond exploring this Blockchain and with all of the new projects popping up its going to be be a very interesting time ahead. I actually care very little about the fiat value of Hive as there is so much value brought by being part of this community it far outweighs the value of the coin and will for a long time yet. I would advise any new users to just throw themselves into the community and take a look about because there is so much going on here beyond the Hive token itself.

Thanks for reading and I hope this article was useful for anyone looking to explore Hive further.
Let me know if there are any other great apps/tokens out there that you are using?

Great post! Hive can be confusing for beginners so easing them in is a valuable work!

I would recommend trying to set a good thumbnail for your posts, it helps grabbing attention.

About text editing, break the big paragraphs in smaller ones, making 3-4 sentence long paragraphs at a time helps the reader at focusing.

I got really curious about the Justin Sun situation but it was so unspecified that i don't know what I should search on Google. Do you have a link for an article (and if you have, editing your post to include it would be nice to!)

Thanks for the hard work and I will be waiting for the next 3 month post!

!1UP

Thank you for the feedback, I actually ended up writing this twice due to an accidental page refresh so it became a bit of a rage write and theres a few small mistakes in there I overlooked second time. I will deffo take onboard what you have said. Heres a link to the Justin Sun story, its a really cool read!
