Greetings and welcome to the December Edition of the One Strong Community Newsletter, available on the One Strong Page. This month has been an excellent showing of community learning & showcasing for the leadership and members. As always, we want to thank you for being a reader/supporter of the One Strong Community, and we hope you enjoy reading our newest update!
🌲December Community Updates
This month, we had a lot of exciting activities to offer and "gold pieces" to give out through Classcraft. Gold Pieces are awarded to students who complete art projects, play games, and learn new things. The One Strong Community Program creates and manages this curriculum and behavior management system that rewards students for their efforts in these activities. We aim to work closely with our students, incentivize learning and engagement, and create a desire for them to actively participate in our programming.
🏆Charles Laboy received a Community Award
On December 26, 2023, the first day of Kwanzaa, Charles Laboy was honored for his unwavering commitment to fostering unity and education within his community.
He received the Community Recognition Award from the Kwanzaa Collective and a Proclamation from the City of Chicopee. Charles has been serving his community for over 15 years, spearheading numerous educational initiatives that provide school-age students with engaging activities and opportunities for self-discovery and growth. His tireless efforts in nurturing curiosity and development within his community have made a lasting impact, making him a deserving recipient of this esteemed recognition on the day of Umoja, a significant celebration of unity.

Our December Winter Wonderland activities were a big hit, bringing lots of joy to everyone! We always want to ensure children have fun while learning new things, so we're excited to share our latest community updates with you.
Craft Instructions - Red Cardinal Painting
We had arts and crafts that let your kids show off their winter spirit. They painted red cardinals and made adorable puffball penguins. We ensured there were different crafts so every child could find something they love doing. These activities are part of our plan to help kids in our community learn through art and culture. We're excited to share some instructions and images of activities, so readers, parents, or guardians can continue the fun and learning at home outside our program.
Winter Day Science Projects: Ice Fishing
Engaging minds with hands-on learning, the Winter Day Science Projects added an exploration element to our programming. The Ice Fishing experiment captivated participants as they delved into the science behind freezing water. With a mix of excitement and curiosity, everyone had the chance to experience the magic of turning liquid water into solid ice. The project's interactive nature made science fun and left a lasting impression, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.
It was a vacation to remember!
As we reflect on our December Winter Wonderland Vacation Programming, we celebrate the success of our gamified approach in fostering joy, learning, and connection within our community.
We had opportunities for laughter, trying our hand at creating artwork, and developing cherished memories with each other. ]As we look forward to our next adventure, we're confident that the positive impact of these shared moments will continue to brighten the days of everyone in our One Strong Community. We can't wait to show you more that we have in store coming into January!
Letter from the Director 🤝
Hello, One Strong Community!
December has been an excellent representation of the work going into One Strong. I am genuinely thankful to have this opportunity to work with students so closely. It means the world to me to have supportive families and community members who see the work that I have put in to make this childcare experience a reality. To be honored by the city for my efforts no less is truly a marvel for me and I can't wait to continue making myself and everyone else proud. Doing this work isn't easy, but I feel deeply committed to fulfilling my mission to support my community since I was 16 years old.
I believe in fostering the artistic, creative, and economic standing of my students and staff. As we look ahead, my commitment remains strong. I am eager to embark on more training and to expand our team by hiring younger students for the upcoming Summer Season. This expansion means that more Work Readiness courses will be available shortly, opening new avenues of learning and growth for students ages 14 and 15. I am excited about the prospect of nurturing talent at a young age, laying the foundation for their future success.
Being a school-age educator is not just a job for me; it is a lifelong commitment to the community and its history. Through my work with One Strong, the Cultural Council, and the College and Career Center at Chicopee Comp, I am dedicated to developing my abilities and resources to continue supporting the earliest years of human development. I firmly believe that by creating better citizens through education and mentorship, we contribute to a community where individuals go on to do great things. It is a privilege to be ingrained in the rich tapestry of our community, and I am excited about the future possibilities as we work together to build a brighter tomorrow.
