Surely there are more competent politicians that can run for the office of president. Biden and Trump are two polarising figures. America doesn't need that now.
Some of the strangeness comes from needing candidates who can win a majority of 50 separate elections. If we had national elections, the large cities would trample rural voters.
Better candidates exist; they are just disincentivized from competing. Political forms of government always attract the worst people, and it is a zero-sum game for them.
