Strategy (from Greek στρατηγία stratēgia, "art of troop leader; office of general, command, generalship") is a general plan to achieve one or more long-term or overall goals under conditions of uncertainty.
-- Wikipedia
There are four(4) things to highlight here:
- A plan
- Long term
- Consistency
- Uncertainty
A Plan
A plan is not a wish or desire or want. It is a calculated series of steps taken to achieve a goal or wish. So wanting to make money or form new relationships isn't a plan but a wish. How you go about achieving these wants or desires is your plan.
Many people come on hive wanting to make money--I think that's the primary goal. They examine the chain on a surface level and try to replicate the actions of some of the top earners, one of which is to write consistently in certain groups and communities and often pander to those with dip pockets. Nine(9) out of ten(10) times this plan fails (woefully).
To achieve meaningful results, you need to understand first the environment. Who are these people? What motivates them? How can I contribute to their overall growth and meet some of their expectations? For instance, you join a community and you discover their primary need is ideas. By providing those said ideas you become an integral part of that circle and over time that creates more opportunities for you.
The second step is to determine your strength and how it can contribute to the overall growth of the chain and community. For instance, I will say my major asset on the hive is time--I have a lot of it (to give) and I can channel it to places where it's needed and gain traction. This might include engaging (on and off the chain); project management and development, etc these are the things I can do with my time. If you try to replicate my activity without having the same or similar amount of time (and skill), you might fall short (most likely). So the point is finding what you can do well and finding who needs it on the chain.
Consistency
Sticking to your plan is one of the key recipes to success both on the hive and every other sphere in life. You need to trust the process and yourself. Many people make the mistake of ditching their plans to join the bandwagon at the slightest chance. Today they are chasing NFTs, tomorrow DeFi, the next is something else. Now, don't get me wrong, it is not an issue to explore, but it is safer when you have a solid fountain to build and branch out from.
Being consistent affords you the chance to leverage opportunities when they come. Opportunities are often a product of chance and to turn the odds in your favour you must play the same game over time. For instance, I was blogging for 4 years before I joined hive. I believed that it would turn into a profitable endeavour at some point even though I did not know how or when. However, when hive did show up I was quick to recognize the opportunity. My consistency met with chance and that was the game-changer for me.
Long Term
Every plan needs time to be actualized. Every good plan needs enough time to come to fruition. Unfortunately, not everyone has that time to be consistent, thus, are unable to create results. Many individuals are consistent but not long enough to get the required result they want.
I consider the 'long term' to be any time frame above 4 years. Now, for some people, this might be shorter, but that shouldn't be your concern. Unfortunately, we live in a world where people are more concerned about results than the process. Recently I was sharing my hive story with a bunch of people and they found it inspiring. Many may not understand that it took four years of my life to be able to speak confidently about hive. How many people are willing to put in that time and effort into anything these days?
Uncertainty
Here is the part that will break your heart: nothing is guaranteed. There is no guarantee that this post will get upvote; there is no guarantee that I will get comments on this post; there is no guarantee that hive will be here tomorrow. How you process this information will determine your journey and attitude on hive.
As much as I feel like an integral part of this network, I do not believe it owes me anything. I consider hive to be a gift (that keeps giving) and whatever I get from it is a plus, especially as a content creator. If I wanted more certainty I would the play 2 earn community, but this is what I love.
I love this space called hive, for what it stands for and how it has impacted my life so I approach it differently than most people do. The more I grow here the less I am critical about this space because I have a level of understanding of how difficult it is to build anything and am more concerned about my contribution.
In conclusion, if you are struggling with hive or anything generally, I think applying these simple principles will help you navigate better and guide you through difficult and confusing times. I recently had to go to the drawing board as well, to realign my strategy with my long-term plans.
Everyone needs a plan (not a wish).

So I started a few posts on Hive again after my 3 year break from the blockchain. The old Steemit gang.
I am excited about the new blockchain, the new interfaces, the new economics and tokenomics. I am heavily involved with Splinterlands for at least 3 months now and this led be back to the web 3.0 social side.
I posted a bit, on and off. I interacted a lot. I am not consistently on some Discord channels related to Hive Communities.
Finally, I decided, I need to ge more committed and start posting daily. The strategy is to cycle through a series of topics/communities. It does not have to be exactly a certain day of the week, but I am not comfortable with posting more than once a week about Splinterlands or once a week about food. Once a week a stat report for the family's accounts.
So it seems that I have a strategy of sorts. I know I need to engage more now with others, now that I am posting a bit more.
It takes time to build these habits.
I am only on my 5th day consecutive posting. I hope to grab another weekly poster badge on #hivebuzz.
But as you say... consistency... long term is termed in a multitude of YEARS.
That will be the challenge. The real challenge is not getting disappointed with low results. Especially when you are neither involved with over 100 persons on the blockchain, nor do you have the HP in the thousands to really benefit from large curation rewards.
But I have noticed that these things are exponential and that there is a snowball effect. I appreciate that.
I've taken to looking at quite a few accounts and rolling back on their posts till it is years before and see how things scaled up. Doe not help me replicate but it helps me understand that by next year this time, my same efforts will probably be met with greater success. But only if I stay in it all.
Thanks for the post!

I think this is a major challenge most people have--having huge expectations based on other people's progress and feeling disappointed when they are unable to replicate such feats in a short period. I believe we all have different time frames and some people scale faster than others but what remains true is that consistency pays off over time.
I do the same too. There is no harm in doing so. And as you hinted if you carefully watch you would see how these people scale over time and that should give anyone who genuinely enjoys what they do here the satisfaction that they can do the same. It is only a matter of time.
Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate your comment. Cheers!

commonly shared. I really appreciate the ideas of valuing process over results. This is something I've been trying to shift in all areas of my life, not just Hive. But yes, also on Hive.@nonsowrites, I !LUV this post. Much common sense, that I do not see
There were several things, but as I head out the door to walk before it gets dark I'll pull myself back from reading and re-reading your (great) words.
But this 👇 needs to be re-stated:
Good to find a like minded Hivian. Thanks for the reminders 🙏

I am glad this piece resonates with you. This is worth more to me than any upvotes, knowing that my words mean something to someone else other than myself. Do enjoy your walk. Cheers!

This right here is where it is at, my friend💖 Success means different things to different people, but when you find yourself in a place that brings you immeasurable joy each day, where you are constantly challenging yourself to do better, write better, love better, and to engage actively with a desire to nurture relationships and build community, then that right there is a plan to be proud of❣️Those who understand the true value of Hive will get that, like both you and @consciouscat, and anything else on top really is just an additional blessing. Loved this article Nonso💥💖 @itsostylish I think you would enjoy this article's perspective too!
Spot on! As my friend said most people come here for the money and end up loving hive. This is my reality. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers!

This is a great one, major take away for me is that if we apply the right principles, we would get the right results.
And it could be more than we would expect because these things have a unique way of compounding
I think if people come to terms with this, they will enjoy their stay here more. Like, take it serious but loosen up while at it.
Awesome post!

I have only been in Hive for some months, but I subscribe to everything you write here.
It was hard for me at first coming from other blogging platforms to understand the whole issue of resource management to publishing content. But thanks to the help of kind people I was able to make my way. Having a plan is a must. Accepting that sometimes the results are not what we expect, but learning from it and not giving up is the way to go. And of course, you are right when you say that Hive is a gift.
I think in the coming months' resource credits won't be much of an issue as people would be able to delegate them.
Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comment
That's great, last week I read a publication, I don't remember by whom, that talked about that project. Hopefully, it will come to fruition soon.
Hello @nonsowrites! I'm so glad Caroline tagged me to this post. Very very useful and on point!
I totally agree with you in this regard. In a world of imediate gratification, putting in time and effort seems very difficult to most people. And we forget to just enjoy the process and it's beauties... 🤔
I'm recent on Hive, been here for almost 2 months and I'm finding the learning process quite fun!
Reading your post I've realized I don't have a plan yet, only wishes... but I think that's ok too, because I feel I don't understand enough of this new world to be able to identify where I can find my place or the best way to be useful to the platform.
However, I'm certain I want to put the effort and time to learn and slowly grow, but with no pressure or expectations. Just having fun and enjoying the process until the moment more opportunities rise and I have a more clearer idea of my long-term plan 😁
Thank you for your insight!

Thank you very much.
The problem of uncertainty and inconsistency is huge on my side.
We all have our struggles and admitting them is one of the first steps in solving them.
Whenever you fail, you try again. There is no harm in doing that. I wish you the best of luck
