Apparently macOS upgrades are notoriously slow (as in "overnight needed" slow)

I'll need to do a few other things first before I try again to upgrade my mother's iMac from Yosemite to El Capitan

Sort:

Thanks for letting me know, I've been putting mine off because of just that reason I suspected lol

I'm glad my troubles serve as a warning to others. In my case, I'm not even upgrading to the latest version of the OS; I'm upgrading to the minimum version required by certain web sites my mother uses. The version itself is @ 10 years old.

Yeah even now, these updates feel like I'm doing it on a Windows machine lol

Not even the replacement printer and its drivers will work without the iMac running El Capitan. The OS "upgrade" (like my own recent "upgrade" from Excel 2003 to Excel 2007) needs to be done sooner or later.

Ouch! Still strugling with yout moms mac it seems

Indeed, although now I don't feel bad about the time spent. Maybe I can avoid taking the iMac to a tech if I do a couple of things first. If not, I'm taking it to a local tech and not the Apple Store; the iMac is past its warranty, anyway.

Good luck with that man

Until the iMac gets the macOS done, I set her up with a Windows 10 laptop I used to use for work a few years ago. At least with this I can be of more help to her.
