"Listening to the news" is not necessarily a bad thing: one must be aware of market trends and ongoing developments to make educated guesses and informed decisions. I would suggest it is more useful recommending "elaborate the news with your own critical mind".

Sort:  

Information is like food...quality matters...of course I can eat a pre-made Big Mac with large fries from McDonalds (CNN) and get the nutrients that I need to survive. But I'd rather have a healthy garden salad with lots of fruits and vegetables (peer review publication). I get the same effect...energy to survive...but I feel a whole lot better after I eat the salad and it won't come with cardiovascular disease later in life :)

I should probably write a post so I can elaborate better...but I did explain a little bit of it here.
