A great example of getting the community involved without necessarily buying tokens or things like that is @shapeshift's FOXatar. By completing tasks you improve your avatar and this avatar only shows that you are involved, it doesn't give you any financial benefits and yet the community proudly shows off its evolved FOXatar just to show that it is contributing.
