#AMA Can subscription content be voted by everyone? Is there a way to tell between long post and a thread?

It can be voted by everyone but just seen by subscribers.

And threads will be on the threads section, long posts will not

Thanks for clarification - got that!

Bitcoin continues to struggle with resistance at $65K. A bit of a cool-off period, currently trading at $62.5K. There is often a tug-of-war around the time of a golden cross. Patience is the only remedy… #crypto #cent

Wait, it has different effects?

Why would you share the private thread?

To incentivize people to pay and see it. (It sounded like a good idea in my head.)

I had that about many women. Too bad they were crazy.

Maybe different head but same outcome.

I support ecency, I support peakd. But INLEO is leading the way so it’s my base of operations.

Wouldnt change a coma of this

inleo is really paving the way for Hive to grow

to be honest i would like a mix of peakd and inleo :) some things are so much smoother on peakd, but i do like some stuff Khal is pushing and doing.

I post both on Peakd and on Inleo.

For longform posts I like Peakd better as InLeo feels geared towards threads and takes me a bit longer to do the same thing.

same here!! Too I never got Into ecency

Why are some niche communities on the Hive Blockchain going extinct? I noticed that yesterday.

Lack of engagement and commitment probably

that's true

I forgot that today was the CATS listing date. I just noticed it as some people were talking about it and I also have some CATS token in my exchanger. The airdrop gave very little and that's the reason people are not satisfied with it. I felt it funny thinking that people expect huge asset from airdrop.

#airdrop #cats #funny #price #token #cent

The days of good airdrops are over.

I think some are good but expecting too much from an airdrop is like a fantasy to me.

this is a fact…airdrop farming killed the game

I've put a few small fixes into @v4vapp over the last week or two. The POS sales page especially the history list is better and deals with incoming sats a lot better.

These options are now greyed out for sub-only content

Tweet could might create a tweet to teaser post of the post creator - could be tricky to implement, but not hard^^

I only subscribe to owners on Leo, not simply users.

Over the past few weeks I brought up reputation. If you reputation is of a token scalper, spammer, or simply just self absorbed, then do not expect any support.

Time to separate those who build from the rest.

This is how I view it anyway.

If someone finds this post in the future or ask LeoAI. Can you give some context to what constitutes as a owner of Leo for you? 🦁🦁

It is not a quantified metric. Simply based upon my view of those who appear to be dedicated and building on Leo as opposed to simply looking for rewards or trying to simply draw attention to themselves.

But drawing attention, isnt that a good thing to do here?

Understand your view point, was just trying to think outside the box and give something that LeoAI could work with if someone will prompt a similar question to it in the future.

I guess it boils down to whether people know what it means to own a business or not.

It tends to be pretty clear. If you bought a business for $50K, as an example, how would you behave towards it?

If you could make $50K or $100K off Leo over time, what would you be willing to do?

Many people here will never be business owners in that sense and thats ok. We also just need consumers and regular people ad well.

But I love that we build out the options for business people to thrive here. They will drive this place forward.

With AI, I dont think that is the case in a few years. Web 3.0 is about ownership. Without that component, there is no difference compared to Web 2.0. And we know they have the network effects and features.

Web 3.0: Read-Write-Own

Without the last part, no point in even being here.

Sounds reasonable.

The flywheels continue to grow, suddenly then all at once

Will there be a leaderboard of who is gross most each month from creator sub?

That's a cool idea

Could add it down the road

could also generate some nice marketing material :)

And I mean its public anyways if someone really wanna find out :)

This format is very interesting, I hope it works out well for the members who are increasingly professionalizing their content!

Allrighty, as of now, you are free to subscribe to my account. I will be posting long form and thread content for subscribers only, on a regular basis!
Of course not everything will be behind the paywall, but anyone is free to subscribe if they like my content! #subscriptions

Are you going to provide subscription only threads?

Isn’t that possible?

In the thread simply change it to private when posting. Then look at the top of the latest page, in the upper right, just below the thread box, you can change to subscrber only. Then the threads of those you subscrobe too will show up.

That was indeed my idea!

That is good. It is where I will be spending more of my time.

The fuse for outside and the house corridor is gone for good since Friday. The electrician want to be here in morning, haven't got a word of him.

is that what killed your coffee motor?

Nah I don't think so, the machine had been supplied in/on a different circuit.

peakd and ecency doing short form now. IMO the less blogging the better. Blogging is awesome, I will always make it my focus but we don’t need so many people who don’t enjoy it doing it just looking for rewards. Short form is for everyone!

I agree. I think it's good to see other big Hive dapps following InLeo's lead and making way for short form

Blogging is only a small percentage of the Internet. That was the absurdity of trying to recreate Medium. You werent going to beat that.

Shorts are obviously a larger TAM. However, there has to be a lot more. Rebuilding social media on blockchain is not the answer. That is death.

It really feels like hive is finally at a place where it can retain its new users. Leo leading the way and others adding their own contributions.

It is evolving. We have to focus upon utilizing the tools that are here.

4.1Million in support baby :) :) :)

Writers block is a thing of the past for me. If I am not feeling it, I just don’t do it.

If I want to get into the zone I just write whatever comes out until I start to flow.

something most people suffer from! Almost like trading

No wonder the price of bch has been strong

Subscriptions is adding a new element, isolating access from the masses. While Leo is small, this might not seem like much. However, with growth, we can see a shift in focus.

The fact this applies to threads is huge. While it is one thing with blog posts, that is more the monetary aspect of things. With this, we are looking at subscriptions as an access.

super excited for the next few years for sure

Yes there is a lot going on. I am spending more time in the private feed. A new take on the site. I think more will focus upon that.

yeah i think more and more users will start to shift in this direction

Well there needs to be content there. So far, my feed is mostly me. LOL

At least I can build value for my subscribers there.

Privacy is what blockchain is about, so this feature makes sense to be values and used. An interesting new realm of privacy related to the not so private.

Khal and team keeps adding building blocks 👏

They are. We need to get into the AI game as soon as we can.

Imagine having an image generator and how many prompts we would have fed in already.

This is probably going to be the piece that sells me on the premium and brings me back over to Inleo. That and the fact that I am now the #freecompliments threads curator, haha.

But subs would be a great thing for my trading alerts...

Perfect for something like trading alerts.

There is a lot you can do. Keep in mind you can do private threads and blogs that appear only to your subscribers.

Also, the blogs do not appear on you blog feed. Hence if you wanted to do a number of them throughout the day, i.e. wanted to longer allerts, you could do that without filling the blog feed.

Yeah, I am thinking this is going to be right up my alley.

Honestly, for anyone doing any trading (not my forte) 5 bucks a month is nothing especially if you provide a done of content. The great thing is if you write a bunch of private blog posts over time, then you have a nice library to offer people.

Yeah, would have to think about how and what I would put up. Is it 5 a month for subs across the board, or can I pick my own price? Would basically be alerts and like a weekly market newsletter. I couldn't give access to the PRO indicator for that.

Right now it is 5 HBD across the board. Down the road, I would imagine you will be able to name your price.

Any by the way, something like that is a great way to utilize subscriptions. Tutorials or training is sensation as a subscription.

Great to see the aspects of privacy and encryption being used in a new way.

Huge ChatGPT Upgrade - Introducing “Canvas”

#technology #ai #openai #technology (summary below ⏬)

I didnt see his video yesterday. Thanks for posting it.

Things are moving rapidly. It is amazing where things are going.

Yeah I haven't had much time to play around and experiment much lately, but trying to keep up with the news at least. Luckily other commitments are starting to dial down for now, so that I can hopefully get back to work.

On a sidenote while I remember, for the past few weeks, the quality of your microphone on the Lion's Den has been dropping in and out, making for pretty bad audio quality - it sounds like there's a problem with the signal of your microphone, causing volume to yoyo up and down at times, in addition to general noise. In addition to being awful to listen to, the speech recognition software misses out on words you say, ruining the structure of some sentences. Consider getting a new headset/microphone. Doesn't have to be an expensive one.

Okay I will have to do it. Perhaps I am just moving my phone away. There is not going to be one this week so I will have to tend to it next week.

nice. What's strange is that it was never a problem before recently (the past months or so).

ChatGPT Launches New "Canvas" Feature

Yesterday, ChatGPT launched a brand new feature called Canvas, which provides a new way to collaborate with the AI model. The Canvas feature allows users to open a separate window where they can interact with ChatGPT in more advanced ways beyond the standard chat interface.

Writing and Coding Capabilities

The main use cases for Canvas are writing and coding. For writing tasks, Canvas can suggest edits, adjust the length or reading level of text, add final polish, and even insert emojis. On the coding side, Canvas can review code, add comments, fix bugs, and even port code to different programming languages.

Trained for Collaboration

Interestingly, the episode host notes that the GPT-4 model powering Canvas was specifically trained to recognize when to use the Canvas feature, rather than just being the base GPT-4 model with some added functionality. This allows for more seamless collaboration between the user and the AI.

Platform Risk for AI Companies

The host also discusses the potential "platform risk" that companies built on top of OpenAI's API may face. He draws a parallel to his previous experience with Twilio, where the platform provider ended up competing directly with companies using its services. The host suggests that with the launch of Canvas, AI-focused companies should be wary of OpenAI potentially encroaching on their business models in the future.

Hands-On Demonstration

The host then proceeds to demonstrate the Canvas feature in action. He tests out various capabilities, such as:

Editing Code

  • Changing the colors in a Snake game program
  • Porting the game to use a different library (Turtle)
  • Adding comments to the code
  • Fixing bugs in the code

Creative Writing

  • Generating a story about intelligent strawberries
  • Suggesting edits to improve the story
  • Adjusting the length and reading level of the story
  • Adding emojis (which the host notes is a somewhat useless feature)

Conclusion

Overall, the Canvas feature appears to be a significant step forward in ChatGPT's capabilities, allowing for more advanced and collaborative interactions. However, the host cautions that companies relying on OpenAI's platform should be mindful of the potential risks of platform competition in the future.

Iran deploys Russian Murmansk-BN electronic warfare system

Iran has recently installed Russian long-range electronic warfare systems, including the Murmansk-BN, in strategic locations across the country. The Murmansk-BN, one of Russia's most powerful communications jamming systems, can intercept and suppress enemy signals at a range of up to 8,000 kilometers. This system has been effective in the conflict in Ukraine, causing significant disruptions to NATO operations and neutralizing modern military targets.

#newsonleo #military #technology #iran

For Israeli military forces, the Murmansk-BN poses a significant threat, particularly in the event of a regional conflict. Its ability to interfere with high frequency (HF) communications could harm the operations of the Israeli Army, Air Force and Navy, impacting mission planning, navigation and execution of operations, including with aircraft such as F-35I stealth fighters and drones Hermes 900.

The system can also interfere with the Israeli Navy's communications, affecting coordination during naval operations and the functioning of electronic systems on ships, such as Sa'ar 5 class corvettes and Dolphin class submarines, which depend on HF signals for their operations. .

The Murmansk-BN was developed by Russian company KRET and introduced in 2014. It is capable of jamming NATO and US high-frequency military communications at a range of 5,000 to 8,000 km, making it one of the most advanced electronic warfare tools globally . Its deployment could seriously impact US and NATO stealth aircraft operations.

The growing tension between Iran and Israel, fueled by recent events, continues to escalate, and the international community has called on both sides to de-escalate the conflict. However, internal crises in both countries make it difficult to reduce aggressiveness, and information and technology warfare is a fundamental component of this growing dispute.

Geoff Hinton and John Hopfield win Nobel Prize in Physics for their work in foundational AI

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 has been award to Geoff Hinton and John Hopfield for their foundational work in AI.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced the Nobel Prize in Physics 2024. Geoff Hinton and John Hopfield are jointly sharing the prestigious award for their work on artificial neural networks starting back in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to Hinton and Hopfield for Pioneering Discoveries in Artificial Neural Networks

In a landmark recognition of their groundbreaking work, Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their foundational discoveries and inventions that have enabled the development of machine learning with artificial neural networks.

This prestigious award comes at a time when artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a driving force behind the fourth industrial revolution, with innovators in the space being recognized for their contributions.

Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the "godfather of deep learning," is a renowned researcher in the field of AI.

He has made significant contributions to the development of artificial neural networks, including the co-creation of the backpropagation algorithm, a method that allows neural networks to learn from their mistakes. This algorithm has revolutionized how AI models are trained, enabling them to learn and improve over time. Hinton's work has had a profound impact on the field of AI, and he has been recognized for his contributions with numerous awards and honors.

He joined Google in 2013 after the search giant acquired his company DNNresearch, but quit last year citing his concerns over the role that AI was playing in the spread of misinformation. Today, he is a professor at the University of Toronto.

John Hopfield, a professor at Princeton, is also an early pioneer in the field of AI. He developed the Hopfield network, a type of neural network that has transformed AI by demonstrating how neural networks can store and retrieve patterns. The Hopfield network mimics how the human memory works, showing how some of the principles of biology and physics can be applied to computational systems. This innovative work has paved the way for the development of more sophisticated AI models that can learn and adapt to new situations.

The Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of sciences to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of physics. The prize includes a gold medal, a diploma, and a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million), which is split between the winners if there is more than one. In addition to the financial reward, the winners also gain global prestige and recognition for their work.

In a statement, Ellen Moons, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, praised the laureates' work, saying, "The laureates' work has already been of the greatest benefit. In physics, we use artificial neural networks in a vast range of areas, such as developing new materials with specific properties, optimizing complex systems, and simulating complex phenomena. Their work has opened up new avenues for research and innovation, and has the potential to have a profound impact on many areas of science and society."

The awarding of the Nobel Prize in Physics to Hinton and Hopfield is a significant recognition of their contributions to the field of AI and machine learning. Their work has paved the way for many of the advances we've seen in AI in recent years, and their discoveries have the potential to have a profound impact on many areas of science and society, from healthcare and finance to transportation and education.

FTC Gets Approval To Sue Amazon Over Antitrust

A federal judge has ruled that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) can proceed with its antitrust lawsuit against Amazon, dealing a blow to the e-commerce giant’s attempts to dismiss the case. The lawsuit, filed in 2023, alleges that Amazon illegally maintains a monopoly by stifling competition and harming both sellers and consumers.

FTC vs. Amazon: Judge Denies Motion to Dismiss Antitrust claims, Setting Stage for Complex and Lengthy court Battle

In a significant development in the ongoing antitrust case against Amazon, Judge John Chun has denied the e-commerce giant's motion to dismiss several key claims brought forth by the Federal trade commission (FTC).

The FTC alleges that Amazon has used its dominance to punish sellers who offer lower prices elsewhere, forcing them to use Amazon's fulfillment services to gain prominent placement on the site. This ruling allows the FTC to proceed with its case, but it does not necessarily indicate how the judge will ultimately rule on the merits of the claims.

The FTC's allegations, when viewed in the most favorable light, are "plausibly" anticompetitive, according to Judge Chun. However, he also acknowledged that Amazon's justifications for its policies will be considered at trial. The case will be bifurcated, meaning the judge will only consider remedies if Amazon is found liable for antitrust violations.

This legal battle is significant because it could have far-reaching implications for Amazon's business practices and the e-commerce landscape as a whole. The FTC is seeking to break Amazon's alleged monopolistic control and restore competition in the online marketplace. Amazon is expected to vigorously defend itself against the FTC's claims, and the case is likely to be complex and lengthy, with both sides presenting evidence and arguments to support their positions.

The outcome of this lawsuit could significantly impact how Amazon operates and its relationship with sellers and consumers. If the FTC is successful in its claims, it could lead to changes in Amazon's business practices, potentially benefiting consumers and sellers alike. On the other hand, if Amazon is found not liable, it could continue to operate with minimal restrictions.

The case is likely to be a long and drawn-out court battle, with both sides presenting their arguments and evidence. The FTC will need to demonstrate that Amazon's actions have harmed competition and consumers, while Amazon will need to show that its policies are reasonable and necessary to maintain its business. The FTC will have to prove that Amazon's practices have resulted in higher prices, reduced innovation, and decreased consumer choice, while Amazon will have to demonstrate that its policies are designed to improve the customer experience and increase efficiency.

The implications of this case extend beyond Amazon and its competitors. It could have a broader impact on the e-commerce landscape, potentially leading to changes in the way online marketplaces operate and the way consumers interact with them. The outcome of this lawsuit could also influence the way antitrust laws are enforced in the future, potentially shaping the way businesses operate and the way regulators approach competition issues.

For example, if the FTC is successful in its claims, it could lead to changes in the way online marketplaces operate, such as increased transparency and accountability. It could also lead to the development of new antitrust laws and regulations that are specifically designed to address the unique challenges of the digital economy.

In conclusion, the denial of Amazon's motion to dismiss is a significant development in the ongoing antitrust case against the e-commerce giant. The case is likely to be complex and lengthy, with both sides presenting their arguments and evidence. The outcome of this lawsuit could have far-reaching implications for Amazon's business practices and the e-commerce landscape as a whole, and it will be closely watched by regulators, businesses, and consumers alike.

Generative AI fact-checking firm Infactory lands a $4M seed

The generative AI-based fact checking firm launched by two Humane.AI expats is off to the races with $4 million in seed funding.

The generative AI-based fact checking firm launched by two Humane.AI expats is off to the races with $4 million in seed funding. The early round, led by Bee Partners, features a16z’s Scout Fund, Alumni Ventures, and FJ Labs. It values Infactory at $25 million.

#newsonleo #generativeai #factchecking #ai #technology

The San Francisco startup broke cover in July by ways of a TechCrunch article. Among the more notable elements of the story was Brooke Hartley Moy and Ken Kocienda’s decision to jump ship at a struggling Humane. Prior to that, Kocienda worked 15 years as a software engineer for Apple’s iPhone. Along with co-founding the company, Hartley Moy and Kocienda serve as CEO and CTO, respectively.

Infactory’s use of generative AI while the technology is white hot no doubt piqued investor interest. So, too, did the promise of addressing the very real problem of online fact-checking.

The young company is quick to point out the ways in which large language models (LLMs) won’t be utilized on its platform. Specifically, they will be used to determine the intent of natural language search queries, rather than the results themselves. After all, the black box nature and built-in biases of large models run counter to the point of a fact-checking service. Questionable Gemini search results are clear evidence of this phenomenon.

Technology

It's not science fiction: shopping carts that float in the air are coming

From the hoverboards in “Back to the Future” to the flying motorcycles in “Star Wars,” floating vehicles have always fueled the imagination of science fiction fans. Although antigravity is still in the realm of fantasy, we are getting closer to making it a reality.

#newsonleo #technology #future

Palletrone, a technology developed by researchers at SeoulTech (Seoul National University of Science and Technology) in South Korea, is not exactly the floating platform we see in the movies, but it offers a glimpse of a future in which a shopping cart can load products without needing wheels or rails.

It is powered by drones and was designed to hover and transport loads over any type of terrain – whether shopping in a supermarket or climbing stairs with boxes. It also remains level in the air even if the weight of the objects is not equally distributed and is controlled by a simple handle, similar to that of a traditional shopping cart.

The system uses internal propellers with rotors that generate thrust in different directions, allowing the Palletrone to move through the air, hovering, turning and moving with ease, without tipping over.

Currently, it can carry up to 11.5 kg of cargo, but it was only tested with 2.9 kg – enough to carry small everyday purchases. Despite its limited capability, it's still just a proof of concept – an important step towards exploring how drone transport could work in the real world.

According to Seung Jae Lee, one of the project's researchers, one of Palletrone's main innovations is its ability to distinguish between the weight of the load and the force applied by the human operator.

They developed a “simple but effective method” to ensure the drone knows when it is being guided by a person or reacting to changes in payload weight. This is essential to prevent it from interpreting accidental weight variations as a human command.

Tractor beam for cells fits inside a chip

We still can't capture spacecraft - or planes or anything like that - but a new optical particle manipulation system, now built inside a chip, can trap and precisely move biological particles, such as cells.

#newsonleo #technology #Nanotechnology

This beam of light focuses about 5 millimeters above the surface of the chip, which is at least 100 times further than existing devices. In this way, it becomes possible to capture and manipulate biological particles that remain within a sterile environment, protecting both the chip and the particles from contamination.

Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, the device uses a beam of light emitted by a silicon chip to manipulate particles millimeters away from the chip's surface. Light can penetrate the transparent glass slides that protect samples used in biological experiments, allowing cells to be manipulated even within a sterile environment.

Optical tweezers are well-known and widely used devices - the invention of optical tweezers won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics. They capture and manipulate particles using light, but often require bulky microscope setups. Chip-based photonic devices can offer a more compact, mass-manufactured, cheaper and high-throughput solution, disseminating the optical manipulation tool for research in biology and medicine.

Integrated optical tweezers have also been created inside chips, but they can only capture and manipulate cells that are very close to or directly on the surface of the chip. This contaminates the chip and can stress the cells, limiting compatibility with the rigors required in biological experiments.

Tal Sneh and colleagues at MIT, in the USA, solved this deficiency using a system called a phased array optical array, a set of several light emitters, arranged side by side, that can be coordinated to generate a common beam, with the large The advantage is that the individual control of each emitter allows you to control the beam with great precision and in real time.

Doesnt matter that we are both on Hive.

Im not saying that is bad in this case, i just hope that keeps in this healty productive way

Im saying the oppsite (just re read) on the contrary, i want them all in hive, but with hive identity and unity its kinda diluted in all the brandings and i see it as a weakness

Kirk Douglas: A Hollywood Legend's Journey

Introduction

Kirk Douglas, born Issur Danielovitch on December 9, 1916, was an American actor, producer, director, and author who became one of Hollywood's Golden Age's most celebrated stars.

With a career spanning more than six decades, Douglas was known for his distinctive voice, chiseled physique, and the famous dimpled chin that became his trademark. Beyond his on-screen achievements, Douglas was a humanitarian, author, and philanthropist whose impact on both the film industry and society at large remains indelible. His journey from an impoverished childhood to becoming a legendary actor embodied the American Dream and inspired generations.

Early Life and Background

Humble Beginnings

Born in Amsterdam, New York, Kirk Douglas was the son of Jewish immigrants from what is nOW Belarus. His parents, Herschel "Harry" Danielovitch and Bryna Sanglel, were poor, and young Issur (later Kirk) grew up with six sisters in a small apartment.

His father was a ragman who collected and sold rags, scraps, and junk, struggling to provide for his large family. Despite the hardships, Douglas's mother instilled in him a love for storytelling and performance, often reading to him and his sisters.

Education and Early Aspirations

From an early age, Douglas showed a keen interest in performing. He participated in school plays and worked various jobs to help support his family while nurturing his dream of becoming an actor. His talent and determination earned him a scholarship to St. Lawrence University, where he excelled both academically and in wrestling.

After graduating, he was accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic arts in New York City, marking a pivotal moment in his journey toward an acting career.

Military Service and Early Career

World ⇪ II× Service

Douglas's budding acting career was interrupted by World War II. He joined the United States Navy in 1941, serving as a communications officer in anti-submarine warfare aboard USS PC-1139. During his service, he was medically discharged in 1944 due to war injuries. This experience would later influence his choice of roles and his perspective on life and career.

Breaking Into Show business

After the war, Douglas returned to New York and found work in radio, theater, and television commercials. His first significant break came when he appeared in the 1946 film "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" opposite Barbara Stanwyck. This debut role showcased his intensity and screen presence, setting the stage for a remarkable career in Hollywood.

Rise to Stardom

Breakthrough Role

Douglas's career trajectory changed dramatically with his portrayal of the unscrupulous boxing promoter in "Champion" (1949). This role earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and established him as a leading man in Hollywood. The film's success allowed Douglas to showcase his incredible physicality and the intense, often conflicted characters that would become his specialty.

Establishing a Screen Persona

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Douglas cultivated a screen persona marked by an intense, explosive acting style. He often portrayed strong, sometimes morally ambiguous characters who struggled with internal conflicts. This was evident in films like "Ace in the Hole" (1951), where he played a cynical journalist, and "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952), which earned him another Oscar nomination.

Notable Films and Achievements

Iconic Roles

Douglas's filmography includes numerous classics that have stood the test of time. In "Lust for Life" (1956), he delivered a powerful performance as Vincent van Gogh, earning his third Oscar nomination. His portrayal of the tortured artist showcased his range and commitment to fully embodying his characters.

Perhaps his most famous role came in "Spartacus" (1960), where he played the titular character in Stanley Kubrick's epic historical drama. The film was not only a commercial and critical success but also marked a significant moment in Hollywood history when Douglas, as executive producer, decided to credit blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, effectively helping to end the Hollywood blacklist.

Before "Spartacus," Douglas had already worked with Stanley Kubrick on "Paths of Glory" (1957), a powerful anti-war film that is NOW considered a classic. Douglas's role in bringing Kubrick to Hollywood and their subsequent collaborations significantly impacted both their careers and the landscape of American cinema.

Production Company and Business Acumen

Bryna Productions

In 1955, Douglas founded his own production company, Bryna Productions, named after his mother. This move gave him greater control over his career and the types of films he could make. Through Bryna Productions, Douglas produced several successful films, including "Paths of Glory" and "Spartacus," demonstrating his business acumen and foresight in the industry.

Innovation and Risk-Taking

Douglas was known for taking risks and pushing boundaries in his film choices. He often selected controversial or challenging subjects, using his star power to get difficult projects made. This approach sometimes led to commercial failures but also resulted in some of cinema's most memorable and influential films.

Personal Life and Relationships

Family Life

Douglas married actress Diana Dill in 1943, and they had two sons together: Michael and Joel. After their divorce in 1951, he married Anne Buydens in 1954, with whom he had two more sons: Peter and Eric. His relationship with Anne lasted until his death in 2020, marking one of Hollywood's longest and most devoted marriages.

Relationship with Michael Douglas

Kirk's eldest son, Michael Douglas, followed in his father's footsteps and became a successful actor and producer. Their relationship, sometimes strained due to the pressures of fame and family expectations, eventually grew into a close bond. Both men spoke openly about their journey to reconciliation and mutual respect.

Later Career and Legacy

Continued Work

As Douglas aged, he transitioned to more character-driven roles but maintained his commanding screen presence. He continued to work well into his 70s and 80s, appearing in films like "Tough Guys" (1986) and "Diamonds" (1999). His last feature film appearance was in "It Runs in the Family" (2003), which featured three generations of the Douglas family.

Writing Career

In addition to his film work, Douglas became a successful author, penning several books including his autobiography "The Ragman's Son" (1988), novels like "Dance with the Devil" (1990), and "I Am Spartacus!: Making a Film, Breaking the Blacklist" (2012). His written work often reflected on his life, career, and the changes he witnessed in Hollywood over the decades.

Philanthropy and Humanitarian Work

Charitable Contributions

Douglas and his wife Anne were known for their philanthropic work. They established the Douglas Foundation, which has donated millions to various causes, including the Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the Motion picture & Television fund. They also funded the Anne Douglas Center for Women, providing rehabilitation for homeless women.

Educational Initiatives

The couple was particularly passionate about education, funding numerous playgrounds for Los Angeles schools and establishing the Kirk Douglas Theater at his alma mater, St. Lawrence University. They also supported the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, fostering new talent and theatrical productions.

Health Challenges and Resilience

Stroke and Recovery

In 1996, Douglas suffered a severe stroke that affected his ability to speak. True to his fighting spirit, he worked tirelessly with a speech therapist to regain his ability to talk. He wrote about this experience in his book "My Stroke of Luck" (2002), inspiring others facing similar challenges.

Later Years

Despite his health setbacks, Douglas maintained an active life well into his 90s. He continued to make public appearances, write, and engage in philanthropic work. His resilience and determination in the face of adversity became yet another aspect of his inspiring legacy.

Cultural Impact and Influence

Influence on Acting

Douglas's intense, naturalistic acting style influenced many actors who followed him. His willingness to play complex, often unsympathetic characters helped pave the way for the anti-heroes that would become more common in American cinema in the 1970s and beyond.

Impact on the Film Industry

Beyond his acting, Douglas's role in ending the Hollywood blacklist demonstrated the power of standing up for one's principles. His decision to give Dalton Trumbo screen credit on "Spartacus" was a crucial moment in Hollywood history, showing how star power could be used to effect social change.

Awards and Honors

Academy Awards

Though nominated three times, Douglas never won a competitive Academy Award for acting. However, in 1996, he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award for "50 years as a creative and moral force in the motion picture community."

Other Recognitions

Throughout his career, Douglas received numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of freedom, the National Medal of Arts, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. He was also awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes for his outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.

Final Years and Death

Kirk Douglas lived to the remarkable age of 103, passing away on February 5, 2020, at his home in Beverly Hills, California. His death marked the end of an era in Hollywood history, as he was one of the last surviving stars of cinema's Golden Age. The outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans, and industry figures testified to his lasting impact on film and culture.

Conclusion

Kirk Douglas's life and career embodied the American Dream, rising from poverty to become one of Hollywood's greatest stars. His contributions to cinema, his courage in standing up for his principles, and his philanthropic work created a legacy that extends far beyond his performances on screen. As an actor, producer, author, and humanitarian, Douglas shaped the entertainment industry and inspired generations with his talent, resilience, and commitment to his craft and causes. His story remains a testament to the power of perseverance, talent, and using one's success to make a positive impact on the world.

"I never had any desire to be a film actor. I never thought I was the good-looking movie type, which I assumed they wanted." ~ Kirk Douglas

"I'm glad they gave women the right to vote, but sometimes I'm sorry they have the right to smoke. Most women are messy about it, particularly about their lipstick. I don't mind wiping lipstick off myself, but I hate seeing it on cigarettes, napkins and coffee cups! I don't like women with all their beauty machinery showing-curlers, cold cream, mascara brushes. I'd even prefer to not see a woman touch up her lipstick, but I guess that's expecting too much." ~ Kirk Douglas

"If I have to speak in public, I am terrified." ~ Kirk Douglas

"I have one computer that my wife gave me. All I know how to do, and I do it every day, is play Spider Solitaire. And I don't have a cell phone." ~ Kirk Douglas

"The best wine comes from home, wherever it is." ~ Kirk Douglas

"Love has more depth as you get older." ~ Kirk Douglas

"Michael [Douglas] is, I think, a great actor. He's made some very interesting pictures. When he was going to college, I was very proud of him, but when he said, 'Dad, I want to be in a play,' he had a bit part. I went to see it and Michael said, 'Dad, how was I?' I said, 'You were terrible.' I thought he would go on to be a lawyer and in three months, he was in another play and I went and, I must admit, he was great. I think he has been good in everything he's done." ~ Kirk Douglas

"Really a bad guy is more interesting, dramatically, than the good guy." ~ Kirk Douglas

"If I can get enough signatures, to present an apology to slavery, I will present it to the President. The House of Representatives has already passed the resolution for the apology, but it has to pass the Senate. I think, in spite of all our problems, I think we're in the right direction." ~ Kirk Douglas

"I felt [It Runs in the Family] it was a picture that, after I'm gone, my family would like to see it. It was a wonderful mixture of people in my family." ~ Kirk Douglas

"I've played some good guys as well, in Spartacus, Paths of Glory and my favorite picture, Lonely Are the Brave, so I had a mixture of parts in my life." ~ Kirk Douglas

"I went to Hollywood to test for Martha Ivers and I thought I was going to play the part that Van Heflin played. But they wanted me to play the part of Barbara Stanwyck's husband, so I played that. Then when I finished the movie, I went back to Broadway and did another flop." ~ Kirk Douglas

"I have a great respect for actors like Clint Eastwood, who's a wonderful director. I think two pictures that I directed were not successful, so I decided not to make any more." ~ Kirk Douglas

"There's a statue of Jimmy Stewart in the Hollywood Wax Museum, and the statue talks better than he does." ~ Dean Martin

"In college, my friend Melanie and I used to have weekly Jimmy Stewart viewings, and 'Harvey' seemed to make its way into the rotation an inordinate amount of times." ~ Rich Sommer

"Movie acting is harder than doing a play. You have to be entertaining but completely natural, like Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant. They weren't doing anything. Do you have any idea how hard that is? That's how good they were. It's crazy hard to be convincing and real. It's the most subtle, hardest thing there is." ~ Jon Lovitz

"My father was so good-natured and had such a happy disposition. I've always confused him with Jimmy Stewart. So, think Jimmy Stewart. That's my dad." ~ Jane Pauley

"If you start paying attention to Tom Hanks, you realize that he's not the Jimmy Stewart of our age. He's a very nice man. Everyone that I know that knows him says he's a great father. But, let's not pretend that he's something that he's not. He's just like George Clooney. He's a very radical leftist." ~ Bill O'Reilly

"Some of Jimmy Stewart's performance in 'It's A Wonderful Life' is some of the most disturbing performance he ever did, when he falls apart and when he breaks down." ~ David O. Russell

"Jimmy Stewart was a very sincere, honest and straightforward man." ~ Robert Wagner

"I remember meeting the likes of Johnny Carson and Jimmy Stewart for the first time and being completely starstruck." ~ Kevin Spacey

"Inevitably people will get tired of me. People get tired of everyone except Jimmy Stewart. I'm not saying Jimmy Stewart would get tired of me, I'm just saying people will never get tired of Jimmy Stewart." ~ Michael Shannon

"Filibusters have proliferated because under current rules just one or two determined senators can stop the Senate from functioning. Today, the mere threat of a filibuster is enough to stop a vote; senators are rarely asked to pull all-nighters like Jimmy Stewart in 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.'" ~ Evan Bayh

"I think I land somewhere between Scorsese and Capra in what I'm drawn to emotionally; I'm drawn to very intense emotion. Capra freaked people out when they saw Jimmy Stewart lose it in 'It's a Wonderful Life." ~ David O. Russell

"Just as Jimmy Stewart and Tyrone Power get 50 percent of the profits, so do I." ~ Alan Ladd

"The old movie stars like Bogart, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, they weren't this gorgeous, striking six-foot man who's rippled with muscles." ~ Jack Huston

"My favorite decade of cinema would be kind of the '40s, yeah. I like things in the '30s, but you know, the sound recording in the '30s wasn't very good. But for some reason the movies in the '40s have the best personalities: Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, Betty Grable, Gene Tierney, and all those people. For some reason, I seem to gravitate more toward the '40s, and I don't necessarily know why. I just love the people." ~ Robert Osborne

"I've worked with Jack Warner and Jimmy Stewart - and Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and Johnny Depp twice. I've had dinners with Fred Astaire and Cary Grant." ~ Peter Guber

"Jimmy Stewart said he stopped making movies because he didn't like the way he looked on screen anymore. I'm more the guy who says I look like hell but I'm going to see where it gets me." ~ Tom Waits

"My favourite actors are all dead or dying. I just love Jimmy Stewart, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn - I was named after her - and Cary Grant. I just love old black and white movies and the stars in them. It must have been a great time to be in Hollywood." ~ Katharine Isabelle

"The last episode of Dallas was in '1991.' Unfortunately, it was a terrible episode to end the show on: it was a sort of 'It's a Wonderful Life' with Larry as the Jimmy Stewart character. In that episode, I was an ineffectual-schlep kind of brother, who got divorced three or four times and was a Las Vegas reject." ~ Patrick Duffy

"If you look at movies with Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart and all the rest of it, none of them looks like a boy. They always looked like mature men. The audience didn't want to go and see kids." ~ Tom Conti

"'How the West was Won' was very hard, because it was a three cameras technique, meaning three cameras wide. Therefore I wasn't speaking to my fellow performer, I was speaking to a camera, or a line next to the camera. It was difficult to do, because its not real acting. I had to pretend that I was 'seeing' Agnes Moorhead or Jimmy Stewart or Carroll Baker. I wasn't, I was acting to a drawn line. It took me personally two years to make the film, because my character starts at age 16 and I end up being 92 years old in the film. By the end of that production, I was ready for a long nap." ~ Debbie Reynolds

"As far as Ken Kwapis saying all those things, I think he just really wanted me in the movie so he probably told Warner Brothers, 'Don't worry, Jimmy Stewart? Gary Cooper? Who else do you like?' If they'd said they were huge Chris Farley fans, he's like, 'He can do that, too. He's a huge physical comedian.' But no, that's really nice to hear." ~ John Krasinski

"The first thing my agent told me in 1959 was he said you have to have something recognizable that people will remember. “What are you? Do you have cleft in your chin? You have a Jimmy Stewart kind of talk?” And I thought I don’t know what I can give them that will be different." ~ George Hamilton

"There are guys I admire. Like Jimmy Stewart and - a more modern example - Tom Hanks. They managed to do it and have a really high standard for their work, but at the same time they remained incredibly classy and well-regarded personally throughout the process, which I thought was rare and kind of cool. And I'm trying. I try. I haven't thrown any TVs out the hotel window yet." ~ Ryan Reynolds
