The CEO of Bitcoin isn't even hiding it anymore.

So many people think they're smarter than anyone else but just ended up being this guy's exit liquidity.

Yeah that's of my concerns regarding mr sayl0r - but he really pushing hard to get more people commit to $BTC

Short-term, good for the BTC price. Long-term, bad for the project

I have been following you since 2017. It was amazing to see you pull off living on Dash for everything. That is exactly what we need to see in #crypto adoption instead of some integration with traditional financial system that we should be replacing.

I genuinely with Dash will be able to outshine BTC as soon as possible. Dash has been ahead of BTC for a decade in terms of technology. What we need is user adoption leading to P2P payments.

That's what I hope a Hive partnership can bring.

What makes hedging with RWA so attractive is the ability to earn and generate yield. This makes this idea a lot more profitable. The average Crypto investor doesn’t want to be exposed to fiat because they will miss out on gains. On the other hand, stablecoins & RWA can generate yield while simultaneously providing a hedge for your portfolio. $HBD #cent

Quick-commerce startup Flink raises another $150M at a valuation of nearly $1B

Flink, a quick-commerce startup out of Berlin that was an acquisition target of Gorillas, Getir, Amazon, and Gopuff

Flink, a quick-commerce startup out of Berlin that was an acquisition target of Gorillas, Getir, Amazon, and Gopuff, is spelling out how it plans to go forth on its own. TechCrunch has exclusively learned that the company has raised $150 million, which it will use to double down on business in Germany and the Netherlands in partnership with Just Eat Takeaway.com.

#newsonleo #business #ecommerce #quick

The funding, $115 million in equity and $35 million in debt, is coming from a mix of new and existing investors. BOND, Mubadala, Northzone, and supermarket giant REWE are all backing Flink, along with two unnamed investors.

The company did not disclose whether Just Eat Takeaway is one of the unnamed investors. The Dutch company had also been interested in a merger with Flink, and it looks like they are working together in what Flink described as a “preferred partnership.” REWE was an existing preferred partner of Flink’s.

“This investment will enable us to further expand our footprint, improve operational efficiency, and continue delivering the fast, reliable service that our customers rely on,” Oliver Merkel, founder and managing director of Flink, said in a statement.

Flink did not disclose its valuation, but sources close to the company told TechCrunch that it is just under $1 billion. The company is undergoing some major recapitalising, considering that prior to this round, Flink had raised more than $1.5 billion, per PitchBook.

When interest in quick commerce was at its peak, Flink was valued at nearly $3 billion after an investment from DoorDash in December 2021 and just months later, it raised more funding that put its valuation close to $5 billion, according to sources.

And in April this year, it was rumored that Flink raised $106 million while exploring a sale to either Getir or Just Eat Takeaway. From what we understand, that capital was a mixture of bridge financing and other commitments that dated as far back as 2022. Since then, the erstwhile aggressive Getir has seriously retreated. However, some of those rumors were accurate, as Just Eat Takeaway indeed is in the mix. Today’s funding round, we are told, is a fresh deal.

The news of the new capital for Flink comes at the tail end of a tumultuous time in the instant delivery market.

This branch of e-commerce — in which online retailers offer a smaller assortment of goods that they house in distributed “dark stores” and offer for delivery in an hour or less — made a huge splash early during the COVID-19 pandemic. They came in as a handy way for consumers who were either sheltering in place or interested in maintaining social distance to get items they might have bought at a store in the past.

Amazon said today that it will host its Prime Day-like sales event, “Prime Big Deals Day,” on October 8-9. For the last two years, the ecommerce company has scheduled its fall event in October and has continued that tradition this year.

#amazon #prime #newsonleo #technology

Apart from the U.S., this event will take place in countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the U.K., and Turkey. Amazon will hold Big Deals Day in Japan later in October.

Prime Members will have a deal for them every five minutes during the event, the company said. It has also prepared a holiday gift guide along. Earlier this year, Amazon made its AI shopping assistant Rufus available to all U.S.-based users. And it will hope that more shoppers use it.

“Exclusive savings events like Prime Big Deal Days combined with unlimited fast, free delivery of 300+ million products across more than 35 categories year-round put Prime in a class of its own and make membership a better value than ever before,” Jamil Ghani, vice president of Prime Worldwide said in a statement.

According to analysts, Amazon’s Prime Day held in July was a successful endeavor for the company, with a record $14.2 billion in sales. Adobe noted that 49.3% of sales were initiated from a phone rather than other devices. The company noted that during the holiday season this year, mobile shopping will drive 53% of online sales.

Amazon’s ecommerce sales in the US are expected to total $491.65 billion in 2024 — up 10.5% from the last year, according to data from analytics firm Emarketer. The data also suggested that Amazon still remains the biggest ecommerce retailer in the country, with a 40.4% market share.

How Google and Yahoo’s shift to stricter email standards proved a windfall for this Armenian startup

EasyDMARC, a B2B SaaS startup out of Armenia that aims to simplify email security and authentication, said it has raised $20 million in a Series A round.

EasyDMARC, a B2B SaaS startup out of Armenia that aims to simplify email security and authentication, said it has raised $20 million in a Series A round led by New York-based Radian Capital.

#google #yahoo #easydmarc #technology

DMARC is a technical standard that is designed to protect the senders and recipients of email from spam, spoofing and phishing. This “Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance” remained a somewhat obscure, if important, standard until October 2023, when Google and Yahoo! said they would make it mandatory for bulk email senders from this year.

Since DMARC’s creation in 2012, many major email providers have committed to implementing the protocol for bulk email senders, but plenty of companies are yet to implement it in their systems. EasyDMARC has leveraged the momentum to amass more than 83,000 customers in over 130 countries since it was founded in 2018 by Gerasim Hovhannisyan and Avag Arakelyan.

It’s clear the enforcement of the standard has helped the startup in this fundraising.

Hovhannisyan told TechCrunch the funding round came together pretty easily after Google’s announcement: “We were getting inbound [interest] from investors. More than 40 VCs started talking to us, and this March, we got a lot of term sheets. We were most aligned with Radian on work and culture, and passed their due diligence. We will be using their networks to help us grow in the U.S. and globally,” added Hovhannisyan.

Admittedly, the startup does have competitors: Valimail (raised $84 million), ProofPoint, and Minecast (raised $90.2 million) also provide email security and authentication services.

But, as Hovhannisyan said: “As the name implies, our solution is easy. What matters is customers saying it’s easy; they get peace of mind. They don’t need expert knowledge to implement our solution.”

Hovhanisyan came up with the idea for the company in 2016 after looking into the aftermath of a severe email phishing attack on a multi-billion-dollar company. He looked into the latest email security technologies and though there were a variety of solutions, none packed the DMARC protocol into something relatively easy for businesses to use. So together with co-founder Arakelyan, in 2018, he launched the startup to tackle this problem.

More standards are on the way that will further benefit EasyDMARC.

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of security standards designed to ensure that all companies that accept, process, store or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment. From March next year, all fintech companies will have to use the PCI DSS standard — this also benefits EasyDMARC.

Bluesky now has more than 10M users

Social network Bluesky said Monday that it now has more than 10 million users. This is largely thanks to the rapid growth of the network

Social network Bluesky said Monday that it now has more than 10 million users. This is largely thanks to the rapid growth of the network in the past few weeks after Elon Musk-owned X was shuttered in Brazil.

#newsonleo #bluesky #socialmedia #technology

“If you’re reading this, you’re one of the first 10 million users on Bluesky!” the company said in a post. Bluesky also has a fun easter egg on its home page: When you click the celebration emoji, you can see your joining number on the platform and share it to your friends.

Last month, Brazil’s top court banned X in the country and established a fine for users accessing the service using a VPN. Post that, other social networks such as Meta’s Threads and Bluesky soared in popularity. Currently, those apps are in the top 10 spots in the App Store and Play Store ratings for the social media category in Brazil.

Bluesky rapidly gained 3 million users within days of X’s ban in Brazil, with its overall user count going past 9 million earlier this month. The company said more than 85% of new users were from Brazil.

Last week, Bluesky said it was seeing record activity on the platform, and because of people signing up in bulk, the platform experienced a few server glitches.

After being in an invite-only mode for almost a year, Bluesky opened up its platform for all users in February. Meanwhile, Bluesky’s Meta-owned rival Threads has grown to over 200 million users.

Bluesky last week finally started letting users post videos on the app. It also rolled out self-moderation tools like controlling who can quote a post, hiding replies, and the ability to mute words for a set amount of time.

Slack is turning into an AI agent hub. Should it?

The head of Slack, Denise Dresser, tells TechCrunch she is shifting the business chat platform into a "work operating system," specifically by making

The head of Slack, Denise Dresser, tells TechCrunch she is shifting the business chat platform into a “work operating system,” specifically by making Slack a hub for AI applications from Salesforce, Adobe, and Anthropic. The company’s CEO sees Slack as more than a place to chat with your coworkers, but do users want that? And if they do, will they pay a premium for it?

#slack #ai #agent #technology #newsonleo

Slack announced several new features on Monday for a pricier tier of the messaging platform: Slack AI. The updates include AI-generated Huddle summaries, similar to the channel summaries already available to those subscribers. Users can also now chat with Salesforce’s AI agents in Slack, alongside tools from third parties that will enable AI web search and AI image generation.

Salesforce purchased Slack in 2021, shortly after the messaging platform became a staple of remote work for millions of people. Three years later, Salesforce is pivoting hard to AI agents — apparently so hard that their popular messaging service is doing it too. Slack CEO Denise Dresser says the platform will play a key role in the transformation, since it’s a natural place to interact with AI agents, because people are already chatting there throughout the workday.

“AI is showing us a new way to experience technology which is very organic to Slack: it’s conversational, you’re surfacing information, and you’re taking action right in the flow of work,” said Dresser, who took over as Slack’s chief executive 10 months ago, in an interview. “There’s probably not a better place and product than Slack to allow you to do that.”

But why does Slack need AI? Ever since ChatGPT launched in 2022, a lot of companies have introduced AI features as a way to appear “cutting edge” even if the integration doesn’t make much sense to the core product. Slack adding AI agents to its messaging service doesn’t seem to be an obvious exception.

Dresser’s justification for AI agents is that Slack is not simply a work messaging platform, but rather a digital workplace or work OS that “brings all your people and processes together.”

The head of Slack tells TechCrunch that every CEO is asking for AI features, such as ways to quickly catch up on team discussions or tools to surface information buried in some database. These are some small ways Slack is trying to bring companies into the AI era, she explained.

One of Slack’s new agents, Agentforce, will allow Salesforce customers to perform on-demand analysis of business data directly in Slack. Cohere and Anthropic’s Slack agents will offer similar services, as long as you’re paying for their enterprise AI services.

Perplexity is also releasing an agent for Slack that will let you search the web. Adobe Express’s Slack agent will let you create branded content from text prompts within the messaging service.

Klarna’s CEO made headlines last month when he announced plans to drop Salesforce and Workday as software providers and replace them with internally built AI tools. Andreessen Horowitz partners published a blog post in July predicting changes like this, where businesses would shift away from the pricey CRM services in favor of in-house AI solutions. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff is skeptical of Klarna’s AI solutions and wants to see some proof the company is really doing it.

Greenlite, founded by an ex-Gopuff exec, automates construction permitting

Greenlite, a startup founded by an ex-Gopuff exec, aims to help automate construction permitting. It's raised new capital.

Construction permitting often involves drafting lengthy applications, leading to unpredictable timelines for developers and businesses. There are tens of thousands of jurisdictions — each with their own different forms and application processes for building permits.

#newsonleo #construction #technology #greenlite

Ben Allen knows a thing or two about permitting. While leading business expansion and strategy at Gopuff, Allen was charged with spinning up Gopuff Kitchens, Gopuff’s attempt at ghost kitchens, in hundreds of locations throughout the U.S.

The biggest obstacle his team faced was obtaining the necessary building permits, Allen said.

“The permitting process for developers, builders and governments is largely antiquated and manual,” he told TechCrunch. “For example, some governing bodies only accept or review permit plans on a specific day of the week during specific hours. Without adopting a solution to streamline this process, many cities would be stuck in a time-consuming and costly cycle for current permit processes.”

After leaving Gopuff, Allen was inspired to try his hand at a solution to the conundrum with James Gallagher, a former colleague at Gopuff. Two years ago, the two launched Greenlite, a platform that attempts to standardize the permitting process for customers across multiple jurisdictions.

Using the platform, Greenlite’s customers — which today range from retailers and quick service restaurants to developers and production home builders — can conduct construction plan reviews almost entirely via software. Rival firms like PermitFlow, Accela and Tyler Technologies also offer this capability, but Gallagher argues that they’re more “application submission-oriented” and simplistic.

“Greenlite provides a digital plan review solution that actually delivers permits faster and more transparently,” Gallagher, Greenlite’s CEO, asserted — adding that Greenlite is also authorized to review construction plans and perform building inspections in around 2,000 jurisdictions.

Orb founders grew so frustrated dealing with billing at Asana, they built their own billing software

Startup Orb is developing a platform with billing tools software businesses can use so they don't have to create their own -- or opt for legacy options.

Billing might not be something that the average person thinks about on a regular basis. But for companies — particularly those in the business of selling software — it’s massively important. They rely on billing systems to ensure that customers pay on time and have a range of ways to pay.

The trouble is, configuring these systems can eat up valuable engineering time.

#orb #newsonleo #technology

Alvaro Morales and Kshiitj Grover know this from experience. Programmers by trade, the pair worked together at Asana, where they were frequently tasked with implementing changes to product packaging and pricing.

“Unlike all the tools we had access to as developers, billing systems were inflexible and rigid,” Morales said. “We found it super counterintuitive that legacy billing tools didn’t make it easy to evolve pricing over time.”

So Morales and Grover did what many engineers do when hamstrung by frustrating software: built their own.

Called Orb, Morales and Grover’s billing platform is designed to be “a single source of truth” for finance orgs. Orb provides the infrastructure for different types of billing plans, like usage-based and consumption-based plans, as well as workflows for payments and invoicing.

“We bring together billing and data in a single platform,” Morales said. “Traditional billing tools are far removed from the product, centered around commercial constructs like a ‘subscription’ or ‘contract.’ Orb starts with ingesting raw product usage, and enables our users to define any pricing logic on top of that.”

While Orb has no shortage of rivals in the billing space, business is good, Morales tells me. Orb’s revenue grew close to 5x in the past year, while the company’s customer base tripled to include brands like Vercel, Replit, Pinecone, and Perplexity.

In fact, Orb still has cash in the bank from the Series A round it closed last March. But Morales and Grover couldn’t pass up an opportunity for more.

This week, Orb closed a $25 million Series B round led by Mayfield, bringing Orb’s total raised to $44 million at a “significant” increase in valuation, Morales says, and will be used to build among other features an AI-powered pricing recommendation engine.

“We’ve found a particularly strong fit in AI, cloud infrastructure, fintech, and dev tools, and have seen most of our growth come from those verticals,” Morales said. He added that Orb plans to hire around 15 people by the end of the year. The startup currently employs 36, most of whom are San Francisco-based.

Other participants in the round included Basecase, Greylock Partners, Menlo Ventures, Scribble Ventures, South Park Commons, and Uncorrelated Ventures.

Amazon is using generative AI to drive more same-day shipping using smarter robots and better routes

Amazon is delivering more Prime items the same or next day with generative AI improvements in robots, routes and predictive inventory.

For years, Amazon has set the bar for package delivery. When Prime launched in 2005, two-day shipping was unheard of. By 2019, one-day shipping was standard for millions of items. Now, the retail giant is turning to generative AI to drive more same-day shipping.

#generativeai #amazon #technology #ai #newsonleo

Amazon is using the technology to optimize delivery routes, make more intelligent warehouse robots, create more-ergonomic environments for employees and better predict where to stock new items, said Steve Armato, Amazon's vice president of transportation technology and services.

During an exclusive tour of Amazon's largest California sort center, located in Tracy, Armato told CNBC that 60% of Prime orders in March were delivered the same day or next day in the top 60 metropolitan areas in the U.S. Amazon is betting on generative AI to increase that figure.

"It seems subtle, but at this scale, getting just one more product in the right spot means that it's shipping less distance when you order it," Armato said in an interview at the warehouse.

In 2020, Amazon began developing models for demand forecasting and supply chain optimization using transformer architecture, the backbones of what we know today as generative AI.

"Generative AI is the next big evolution in technology," Armato said. "It's remarkable, and we're already applying it in very practical ways across our operations."

But not all the changes that generative AI may bring to the e-commerce giant are positive. There are concerns about the high-energy needs of generative AI and about its ability to enable robots to replace Amazon's human workforce, analysts told CNBC.

Robots and new roles

The number of Amazon warehouse robots grew from 350,000 in 2021 to more than 750,000 in 2023, according to the company.

Amazon began adding AI transformer models to its warehouse delivery robots in 2022 so the machines can dash around each other more intelligently. CNBC watched hundreds of them move in a coordinated grid in the warehouse. Armato calls this "the dance floor."

"Some of the two-day deliveries might stand aside, let the robot with a next-day delivery go on its mission first and take a straight line to its destination," Armato said.

Hundreds of robots dash around each other with the help of generative AI at Amazon's largest California sort center in Tracy, California, July 31, 2024.

While these robots navigate using a series of QR codes, Amazon's next generation of drive units, called Proteus, are fully autonomous, the company said.

"They're using generative AI and computer vision to avoid obstacles and find the right place to stop," Armato said.

As part of the company's AI strategy, Amazon in August struck a deal with AI startup Covariant. Amazon hired the startup's founders and licensed its models that help robots handle a wider range of physical objects. Amazon is also developing a bipedal robot called Digit that can grasp and handle items in a humanoid way.

CNBC saw a row of 20 robotic "Robin" arms that use computer vision to determine how much pressure to use when picking up various package shapes and sizes. Amazon said generative AI teaches the arms how to handle products they've never seen before based on data from similar products in Amazon's vast catalog.

Instagram tightens restrictions on teen use, putting parents in control

Instagram is introducing Teen Accounts to automatically enroll young users into an app experience with built-in protections.

Instagram is introducing Teen Accounts to automatically enroll young users into an app experience with built-in protections. The company announced that starting on Tuesday, it will start placing all current and future accounts held by a teenager into a Teen Account. Instagram is also rolling out new updates to its parental supervision feature that allows parents to monitor their child’s activity on the social network.

#instagram #socialmedia #meta #newsonleo #technology

The changes come nine months after Instagram, alongside other popular social networks, was grilled by lawmakers for not doing enough to protect young users on its platform.

Although teens on Instagram are already placed into several protections by default, they have the option to opt out of them if they don’t have a supervised account. Now, they’ll need their parent’s permission to do so if they’re under the age of 16 — even if they don’t have a supervised account.

This change aims to address concerns that Instagram’s teen protections were more for show rather than meeting the safety requirements lawmakers and regulators have been proposing.

The new built-in protections will limit who can contact a teen on the app and also restrict the type of content the account holder can view. To request a change, teens will need to set up parental supervision and ask permission.

With a Teen Account, teens will need to choose whether or not to accept new followers and can only receive messages from people they follow or are already connected to. (Meta told TechCrunch that Instagram considers a teen connected to someone if they are friends on another Meta platform like Facebook or Messenger, or if they accepted a DM request from them in the past to chat but didn’t follow them.)

Teens can also only be tagged or mentioned by people they follow. Plus, the app will automatically filter out offensive words and phrases from a teen’s DMs and comments on their posts.

In addition, teens will be restricted from seeing some sensitive content in the app’s Explore page and in Reels. For instance, the app won’t show them content that shows people fighting or content promoting cosmetic procedures.

To address screen time concerns, teens will be notified to close the app after they have used it for an hour each day, and Instagram will automatically enable sleep mode between 10 PM and 7 AM each day to mute notifications overnight. During this time, the app will send auto replies to any direct messages (DMs) they receive.

While parents have been able to set custom daily time limits and add scheduled breaks for their teens on the app, Sleep Mode now applies to every teen on the app, regardless of whether their parents have set their own limits or not. Previously, Instagram would only nudge teens to close the app if they were using it at night.

This is a sizable step towards addressing mental health concerns tied to social media, as raised by the U.S. Surgeon General and various states, some of which have even gone so far as to restrict teens from using social media without a parent’s consent.

Teens under the age of 16 will also need a parent’s permission to change any of the default settings that come with a Teen Account. If a parent wants more control over their older teen’s experiences, they can choose set up parental supervision.

As part of the rollout of Teen Accounts, younger users will get access to a new feature that lets them select topics they want to see more of on the Explore page and in their recommendations. They can select topics like Soccer, Crafts, Dance, Music & Audio, Cats, Food & Drink, Computer Science and more. Instagram says this will help them to focus on more positive content.

Parents will be able to see the topics that their child has chosen to see content from, Instagram says. Of course, algorithms can still drive Instagram users to topics other than those they’ve selected, if the app detects that’s what the teen finds more engaging.

Starliner problems extend astronaut mission to ISS to 8 months

NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are no strangers to spending extended periods of time away from their families. Both retired US Navy captains have faced war zones and are veterans of previous six-month stays on the International Space Station (ISS).

When they boarded Boeing's Starliner spacecraft on June 5, 2024, Wilmore and Williams expected a mission of a few weeks, at most a month. The anticipated minimum duration was eight days, but NASA was prepared to approve a short extension.

#newsonleo #space #technology

This was a significant milestone, as they were the first astronauts to enter orbit on the Starliner, a feat that took around seven years to achieve.

Unfortunately, the Starliner test flight did not achieve all of its objectives. Wilmore and Williams, initially expected to return after three months, are now facing an eight-month mission on the ISS. Starliner presented several problems, culminating in NASA's decision to send the capsule back to Earth without the astronauts.

60 Countries Unite to Keep AI in Check for Military Use - China and others opt out

At a recent summit in Seoul, around 60 countries, including the U.S., agreed on a non-binding "blueprint for action" to ensure AI is used responsibly in military settings. Notably, China and 30 other nations didn’t sign on. The agreement highlights practical steps like assessing risks and keeping humans in control of AI, especially in critical areas like nuclear operations. It also aims to prevent AI from being used to spread weapons of mass destruction. While not everyone’s on board, this is a significant move toward global cooperation in making sure AI doesn't become a threat in warfare.

MacPaw launches its alternative iOS app store for EU in open beta

Ukraine-based Mac and iOS app developer MacPaw announced today that it is releasing its alternative mobile app store Setapp

Ukraine-based Mac and iOS app developer MacPaw announced today that it is releasing its alternative mobile app store Setapp thanks to the new Digital Markets Act (DMA) rules in the EU. The company has been testing the app store under closed beta for a few months now with select users. MacPaw is now allowing all users to try Setapp Mobile in open beta.

#newsonleo #macpaw #ios #technology

The store has more than 50 productivity, finance, video, photo and creativity apps from MacPaw’s own offerings and other developers. These apps include CleanMyPhone, ClearVPN, Riveo video editor, Awesome Habits tracker, Time Master, BusyCal, Free your music, MonAI, Elk currency convertor, Ochi focus manager, Bookshelf: Reading Tacker, and AdLock.

While SetApp Mobile is a marketplace from a technical standpoint, users will get all apps through a $9.99 monthly subscription with a seven-day trial. Users will need to be running iOS 17.4 or later on their device with an Apple ID associated with an EU member state.

MacPaw was one of the first companies to agree to Apple’s controversial DMA agreement for distributing apps through a non-App Store medium. The company is still not set on the business model and user experience, so it opted to release this initial version as an open beta.

“We see areas of improvement in terms of user experience, number of applications, and categories we offer. We think there is demand for the alternative app store, so we decided to launch it and tune our business model based on the feedback from users,” Yaroslav Stepanenko, director of marketing at MacPaw, told TechCrunch over a call.

“We also have to balance the number of applications and the number of users. We can’t have a low number of apps and a lot of users and vice versa.”

Stepanenko added that the store would not have hundreds of apps at any point to avoid stifling discovery for participating developers.

MacPaw has primarily offered Mac-focused apps through several subscription tiers, allowing users to download companion iOS apps for those services. However, with this Setapp mobile marketplace, the company believes it can address millions of iPhone users in the EU.

Tech M&A has been thwarted by regulators, but dealmakers skeptical that election will change much

With regulators making it hard for large tech companies to do significant deals, M&A transaction volume in the industry continues to drop.

Lina Khan, chair of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, and Jonathan Kanter, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's antitrust division, participate in a discussion on antitrust reforms at the Brookings Institution in Washington on Oct. 4, 2023. Khan assumed the role of FTC chair in June 2021 after being appointed by U.S. President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate.

#technology #business #mergers #finance

Google had been in talks to acquire marketing software maker HubSpot earlier this year, but no deal took place. The company then made a run at cybersecurity startup Wiz. But that didn't happen either.

Google took a different tactic in closing its one notable transaction of late. Following a model pursued by Amazon and Microsoft to lure experts in artificial intelligence, Google announced last month it was hiring the founders of generative AI startup Character.AI. Rather than buying Character outright and shutting it down — the standard acquihire playbook — Google kept the startup alive and entered into a licensing deal for its technology.

This is the new world of tech M&A. Under the Biden administration, and more specifically Federal Trade Commission head Lina Khan, the biggest companies have been thwarted from pursuing large deals. In some cases, they've even walked away from smaller deals. Amazon abandoned its $1.7 billion purchase of iRobot in January after the FTC and European regulators raised concerns.

Since peaking at $1.5 trillion in 2021, tech transaction volume has plummeted, dropping to $544 billion last year, according to Dealogic. So far in 2024, that number sits at $465 billion.

Within tech, private equity buyers are the ones keeping the market afloat. In July, BlackRock agreed to buy data provider Preqin for $3.2 billion, two months after Permira announced it was buying website-building platform Squarespace in a deal valued at almost $7 billion. Thoma Bravo, a leading tech buyout firm, said in July it was selling Instructure to KKR for $4.8 billion.

Don't expect much to change for the rest of this year. With the presidential election coming in November, the regulatory environment could be poised for a shake-up, potentially leading to the removal of deal-making barriers.

Tesla unloads new Semi details: variants, efficiency, fleet data so far

The Tesla Semi program is arguably one of the most intriguing within the scope of the company in recent memory. But it’s only getting started.

During the IAA Transport Show in Germany today, the Semi’s Head of Engineering, Dan Priestley, unloaded tons of new details on the vehicle, including plans to leverage several different variants of the electric truck, how its efficiency stacks up, and various Easter eggs that the company has discovered through its fleet operation thus far.

#tesla #semi #ev

Tesla Semi Configurations
Priestly said Tesla will develop several configurations of the Semi so that they can be purchased according to the buyer’s needs.

Thanks to Tesla’s vertical integration, manufacturing will be simple.

Mass production at the new Semi factory near Giga Nevada will scale to 50,000 units annually.

Priestley said:

“We aim to be as competitive at an upfront price with diesel as possible, in order to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks as quickly as we can. Again, this is on lock for Tesla’s deep vertical integration, and we will plan to leverage this into multiple variants…We will be taking on a wide variety of applications and vehicle types.”

SpaceX could receive over $600k fine from FAA

SpaceX could potentially receive a fine of over $600,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA says it will give SpaceX 30 days to respond to the potential fine, which it wants to apply for allegedly failing to follow license requirements for the Satria-1 communications satellite launch last June and the EchoStar XXIV/Jupiter launch one month later.

SpaceX has to give an explanation for the violations, or it will receive fines for both, amounting to $633,009.

#spacex #technology #newsonleo #FAA

Satria-1 Launch ‘Violation’
The FAA says SpaceX used a new launch control room for the Satria-1 launch on June 18, 2023, and did not conduct the required T-2 hour poll.

SpaceX had submitted requests to make the changes to its license to launch in May, but the FAA did not approve this by the time the launch rolled around in June.

The FAA said in a release that the space exploration company “proposed revisions including adding a new launch control room at Hangar X and removing the T-2 hour readiness poll from its procedures.”

The agency did not approve these measures, but SpaceX did it anyway.

Each violation could cost SpaceX $175,000, meaning it could be potentially $350,000 in fines.

GPT-o1: "The Best Model I've Ever Tested 🍓 I Need New Tests!"

Summary below ⏬

The host conducted an in-depth test of OpenAI's newly released ChatGPT o1 model, comparing it to previous language models and putting it through a series of challenging tasks. The results demonstrate significant advancements in AI capabilities, with the o1 model outperforming its predecessors in various areas.

The host began by noting that OpenAI had used a question from his previous AI rubric on their official website, suggesting that the company may be paying attention to his work. He then proceeded to test the o1 model, which is available in two versions: ChatGPT o1-preview and o1-mini.

This is how we know we are rapidly moving to AGI.

The fact that our metrics do not work show we are entering something completely different.

yes, things are just moving faster and faster. I couldn't help myself and bought openai premium for a month just to try it out for myself.

Not surprisingly, it's very impressive

What is going to get very interesting is when Claude, Grok, and Llama have their next versions out.

Do you think OpenAI is going to be the only one forging ahead at such a pace?

I have a feeling neither Anthropic or Elon (or Zuckerberg for that matter) is about to let OpenAI win this race. I mean it wasn't long ago that Anthropic's latest model was stronger than GPT

Key Findings:

  1. Code Generation: The o1 model successfully created a fully functional Tetris game in Python on its first attempt, with only 35 seconds of "thinking" time. This was a significant improvement over previous tests, where the model required multiple attempts.

  2. Problem-Solving: The model correctly solved a complex problem involving envelope size restrictions for mailing, demonstrating its ability to consider multiple dimensions and rotations.

  1. Self-Awareness: When asked to count the words in its own response, the model provided the correct answer, showing an understanding of its output.

  2. Nuanced Reasoning: In a question about killers in a room, the o1 model provided a detailed analysis, considering various scenarios and demonstrating a level of nuance not seen in previous models.

  3. Physics Understanding: The model correctly answered a question about a marble in a glass, accounting for the effects of gravity and careful handling.

  4. Mathematical Prowess: o1 successfully solved a complex mathematical formula, providing a step-by-step breakdown of its thought process.

  1. Ethical Reasoning: When presented with a moral dilemma, the model offered a nuanced perspective before providing a direct answer when prompted.

The researcher noted that the o1 model's ability to show its "thinking" process through intermediate steps was particularly impressive. This feature allows users to see how the AI breaks down complex problems and arrives at its conclusions.

However, the model did struggle with one question involving spatial reasoning at the Earth's North Pole, which the researcher acknowledged is a notoriously difficult problem for AI models.

Overall, the researcher concluded that the o1 model is "by far the best model" he has ever tested, surpassing other AI models in both accuracy and nuance. He emphasized that while other models have performed well on similar tests, o1 is the first to consistently capture subtle details and provide more comprehensive analyses.

This test highlights the rapid advancements in AI technology, with models like o1 demonstrating increasingly sophisticated problem-solving abilities across a wide range of domains. As these models continue to evolve, they may have significant implications for various fields, from software development to ethical decision-making.

The word dally has a number of meanings. To dally can be to physically linger or dawdle, or to waste time. Dally may also mean "to act playfully," especially in a romantic sense, or "to deal with something lightly or in a way that is not serious."

//Three members of the hiking group were dallying and didn't arrive at the overlook until others were already starting to head back to the trailhead.

//Alton has been dallying with the idea of starting a bakery.

So, if you dally in bed, and your spouse shows up, and you start to dally with him/her, but you dally to long, does that ruin things?

🧵/1

I plan to buy a tricycle for my son's 2nd birthday next week. While browsing online, I’ve seen many options on Amazon, but the variety makes it difficult to choose a good, durable product.

🧵/2

I'm considering visiting a store to physically check the tricycles, compare prices, and assess quality. My goal is to find a tricycle that will last for two years, ensuring my son enjoys it.

60.5k is going to be tested again before long, I'm certain of it

I will take your word, and watch ;)

No! Don't take my watch 😉
Jk!

lol. That reminds me of a joke. We have signs on the highway "Watch for fallen rocks" I still don't know where to take the rocks to, to get my watch.

It's like a wishing well. You just need to let the rocks fall 😂

How many tokens are you adding to Leo a day?

Are you even focused upon this? In the era of AI, this is crucial.

I don't know. Probably less than a leo lol

Well I would say understanding is crucial.

Around 700 tokens per long-form summary, I just checked using a neat little web app. The transcripts of the shorts I post are around 125 tokens each.

With an average of 4 summaries + say 10 shorts a week, that's around 4k tokens a week from me. I guess that's my minimum

LOL I am a bit higher than that. But do not forget typing this thread also added.

Haha I also think you're slightly higher than that. Just a smidge

Doing my best to be that. It is our database have to fill it.

what is the calculation?

The easiest way is to consider a token a word. That isnt exact but it is enough of a framework.

To give you an idea, Llama3 was trained on 16 trillion tokens.

What I can understand we have to feed a lots of data..

That is the baseline if you want to go from that.

I see you talk about this a bit,but then see you supporting those who don't. You've also mentioned changing your upvote habits and could be focusing on content that does, but you haven't. Why?youve been feeding Lucrecia and she hasn't + much

Probably always less than they could. !PIZZA
