Good luck!

it fricking windy 🌬️ 😂

When are you leaving? And where will them planes take you? I assume it's not a direct flight all the eay back home 😆

Nah… same kind of shenanigans… either, burning last rounds before heading off. It was a blast!

Check my twitter, I will do a post later when I arrive. We need more exposure on #web2

Very true. My twitter keeps saying my account is suspended though 😂

bad boy - what have you been doing?

Nothing, except retweeting stuff. I don't use it for anything else

Looking good, but very cloudy.

Always ready for an adventure 😉

Good luck, sad to have missed

I am tired, I feel that I don't have control of my life, always waiting for something... I need a reset, isolated me from every that I know 😔 one day I will have my fresh start

Go for the fresh start. You can have one every day / morning to some degree. Maybe making time for yourself where and when you can have control before you "step into" everything else may help you get closer to that reset and control you are looking for.

Hey fren, I can only imagine what you are going through now. Well, some people do feel that way, sometimes. It's good you've realized the pain point and have resolved to make a fresh start so that you can take charge of your life again. That's absolutely amazing and I hope it goes well with you.
Wishing you all the best.

Sometimes we do feel like we're getting stuck in the same old routine. It's important to make a change every so often, even if it's minor. We're not built to handle the same thing over and over - part of our nature is to embrace changes!

I do believe that you'll be the one to determine when you'll have your fresh start. Make sure it happens while you're still young and healthy.

SpaceX capsule splashes down after history-making Polaris Dawn mission

The capsule splashed down before dawn on Sunday morning in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Florida's Dry Tortugas islands.

A SpaceX capsule carrying four private citizens splashed down off the coast of Florida before dawn 3:36 a.m. ET on Sunday morning, ending a historic mission that included the world's first all-civilian spacewalk.

#technology #newsonleo #spacex #space

Billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Scott "Kidd" Poteet and SpaceX engineers Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, returned to Earth in a Crew Dragon capsule, splashing down at off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida, in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Polaris Dawn we are mission complete," operators announced over the crackle of a radio as recovery vessels made their way to the capsule bobbing in the nighttime sea.

The five-day Polaris Dawn flight marked the fifth private mission for SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule. It was also the company's most ambitious expedition, as the crew members and their spacecraft executed several risky maneuvers.

Chief among them was the all-civilian spacewalk that took place on Thursday. Isaacman and Gillis exited the Dragon capsule on a tether, each spending around 10 minutes out in the vacuum of space. The duo spent the spacewalk conducting mobility tests in their newly designed spacesuits.

The outing was a risky undertaking, because the Dragon capsule does not have a pressurized airlock. This meant that all four members of the Polaris Dawn mission wore spacesuits during the spacewalk, and the entire capsule was depressurized to vacuum conditions.

Completion of the spacewalk was a major milestone in the history of human spaceflight. Previously, only astronauts from government space agencies had conducted spacewalks to build or upgrade space stations in orbit, repair satellites and complete science experiments.

The LinkedIn games are fun, actually

I have a guilty pleasure, and it’s not that I just rewatched “Glee” in its entirety (yes, even the awful later seasons)

I have a guilty pleasure, and it’s not that I just rewatched “Glee” in its entirety (yes, even the awful later seasons), or that I have read an ungodly amount of Harry Potter fan fiction in my time.

My guilty pleasure is that I play the LinkedIn games.

#linkedin #games #technology #gaming

To answer the obvious question: Wait, LinkedIn has games? Yes. In May, LinkedIn launched three puzzles through LinkedIn News, like a knock-off version of New York Times games. There’s the logic puzzle Queens (my favorite), the word game Crossclimb (pretty good), and the word-association game Pinpoint (not a great game, but whatever).

LinkedIn is adopting the classic tech strategy of seeing what works for another company and then trying to replicate that success, even if it might seem odd to play games on a professional networking platform. But it’s no wonder why NYT Games has spurred this inspiration. In a way, The New York Times is a gaming company now — as of December 2023, users spent more time on the NYT Games app than on its news app.

LinkedIn isn’t alone. Everyone has games now. Apple News. Netflix. YouTube. There are so many games for us to indulge in. And yet, once I finish my various New York Times puzzles, I still want more. It’s not like I’m itching to play LinkedIn’s Crossclimb before Connections, but the games are good enough to give me that sweet rush of dopamine.

Usually I play LinkedIn’s games during the workday (sorry to my boss). Sometimes it’s because I’ve gone on LinkedIn to fact-check something or search for a source, but then I remember I can take a few minutes to play a little game. Other times, my mind is scrambled after staring too long at the same draft of an article, and taking a break to solve a colorful Queens puzzle makes it easier to go back and confront that Google Doc again.

But it turns out that there’s a science to why we love these quick, once-a-day brain teasers.

I recently spoke with DeepWell DTx co-founder Ryan Douglas, whose company is predicated on the idea that playing video games (in moderation) can have mental health benefits. In some cases, the brief distraction of a game can pull us out of negative thought spirals or help us approach a problem from a new perspective.

These two friends built a simple tool to transfer playlists between Apple Music and Spotify, and it works great

Soundiiz is a free third-party tool that builds portability tools through existing APIs and acts as a translator between the services.

Last year, I had the unfortunate experience of losing all my playlists when I switched from Apple Music to Spotify. To me, playlists are important. They’re snapshots of a time in your life; maybe your summer of 2016 had a certain soundtrack to it. But, traditionally, music streaming services don’t make it easy to take playlists with you to other platforms.

#music #spotify #apple #technology

So you can imagine how excited I was to see that Apple Music created a new playlist transfer tool through the Data Transfer Initiative (DTI), a group founded by Apple, Google, and Meta to create data portability tools. Europe’s Digital Markets Act requires these designated “gatekeepers” to fund transfer tools as part of a broader remedy to Big Tech’s strategy to lock users into their platforms.

Finally! Except there was one big problem. The tools don’t work with the world’s most popular music service, Spotify, which seemingly didn’t catch the data portability wave (or maybe a regulator isn’t telling them to). The DTI’s tool only transfers between Apple Music and YouTube Music, making it a lot less useful for most people.

The DTI’s executive director, Chris Riley, is fed up with Big Tech’s lock-in policies as well. He’s been trying to get more companies to come to the negotiating table and make their services more portable.

“We’ve kind of gotten baked into this world over the past decade of just feeling stuck,” said Riley in an interview with TechCrunch. “I don’t think enough people know this is something they should have.”

Acknowledging the DTI’s limitations, Riley suggested I transfer my playlists from Apple Music to Spotify using Soundiiz, a free third-party tool. Instead of working directly with streaming services, Soundiiz builds portability tools through existing APIs and acts as a translator between the services. Within minutes, I was able to link my accounts, transfer my playlists, and start listening to my old Apple Music playlists on Spotify. It was awesome and easy.

Soundiiz allows you to transfer playlists between Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer, SoundCloud, and 20 other streaming services I’ve never even heard of. There’s a simple user interface to connect your streaming services and pick the playlists you want to transfer over, including ones that someone else has created.

Every fusion startup that has raised over $300M

Fusion startups have raised $7.1 billion to date, with the majority of it going to a handful of companies.

Over the last several years, fusion power has gone from the butt of jokes — always a decade away! — to an increasingly tangible and tantalizing technology that has drawn investors off the sidelines.

The technology may be challenging to master and expensive to

#technology #energy #fusion #newsonleo

The technology may be challenging to master and expensive to build today, but fusion promises to harness the nuclear reaction that powers the sun to generate nearly limitless energy here on Earth. If startups are able to complete commercially viable fusion power plants, then they have the potential to upend trillion-dollar markets.

The bullish wave buoying the fusion industry has been driven by three advances: more powerful computer chips, more sophisticated AI, and powerful high-temperature superconducting magnets. Together, they have helped deliver more sophisticated reactor designs, better simulations, and more complex control schemes.

It doesn’t hurt that, at the end of 2022, a U.S. Department of Energy lab announced that it had produced a controlled fusion reaction that produced more power than the lasers had imparted to the fuel pellet. The experiment had crossed what’s known as scientific breakeven, and while it’s still a long ways from commercial breakeven, where the reaction produces more than the entire facility consumes, it was a long-awaited step that proved the underlying science was sound.

Founders have built on that momentum in recent years, pushing the private fusion industry forward at a rapid pace. Fusion startups have raised $7.1 billion to date, according to the Fusion Industry Association, with the majority of it going to a handful of companies.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems

With a $1.8 billion Series B, Commonwealth Fusion Systems catapulted itself into the pole position in 2021. Since then, the company has been quiet on the fundraising front (no surprise), but it has been hard at work in Massachusetts building Sparc, its first-of-a-kind power plant intended to produce power at what it calls “commercially relevant” levels.

Sparc’s reactor uses a tokamak design, which resembles a doughnut. The D-shaped cross section is wound with high-temperature superconducting tape, which when energized, generates a powerful magnetic field that will contain and compress the superheated plasma. Heat generated from the reaction is converted to steam to power a turbine. CFS designed its magnets in collaboration with MIT, where co-founder and CEO Bob Mumgaard worked as a researcher on fusion reactor designs and high-temperature superconductors.

Why ORNG's founder pivoted from college food ordering to real-time money transfer

Alex Parmley has been thinking about building his latest company, ORNG, since he was working on his last company, Phood.

Alex Parmley has been thinking about building his latest company, ORNG, since he was working on his last company, Phood.

#orng #newsonleo #technology

Launched in 2018, Phood was a payments app that let students use dining dollars to order food from third-party apps and merchants anywhere in the world. It built the first campus-integrated debit card and worked with colleges across the nation, such as UT-Austin.

Parmley discovered firsthand the long and boring process of moving money as a business owner. He recalled it could take 15 to 30 days for vendors to receive the actual dining dollars from the universities after students ordered. This meant the company had to raise millions in a debt facility to pay those vendors while waiting for payment from the universities to process. As inflation rates rose and debt borrowing became expensive, this made running Phood expensive.

Parmley started wishing for a product that could let money transfer in real time, real fast. He was also ready for a change and knew that if he stayed in the market, there was a possibility his company would be squeezed out. So, after six years of running Phood, he took a big swing. He pivoted the company’s business, renamed the whole thing ORNG, and started pitching the financial contacts he made while building Phood on a bigger, more expansive idea.

“Our product is a network that lets money move instantly and safely across countries,” he told TechCrunch about ORNG. “Kind of like sending a message but for enterprises.”

On Friday, ORNG officially came out of stealth mode with a few clients, including publicly traded ones, though he declined to go into detail.

ORNG works with banks, fintech companies, and large businesses that need quick and easy payments. He said right now, each country has its own way of handling fast money transfers but the platforms they use don’t always work with the platforms other countries use. This can cause a headache and financial delay — similar to how those small businesses had to wait days for the university to pay them.

“Our method brings all these systems into one easy-to-use API,” Parmley said, adding that this means businesses can handle payments worldwide through one platform. “We’re not just making things faster; we’re making them simpler. Stripe increased the GDP of the internet; we want to increase the cash flow.”

A walk through the crypto jungle at Korea Blockchain Week

Blockchain technology is all about decentralization and virtualization.

Blockchain technology is all about decentralization and virtualization. So it’s a little ironic that humans love to come together in person at big blockchain events. Such was the case last week in Seoul, where a record 17,000 people and 300 speakers came together for Korea Blockchain Week.

#korea #newsonleo #technology #blockchain

Like traditional tech conferences, the event featured a lot of big names in the field, both the high-profile (Vitalik Buterin, Richard Teng of Binance, and Mark Karpeles among them) and the no-profile (researchers, professors, and many founders of new startups).

Unlike normal confabs, you also got the ha-profile: apes, penguins, ducks, and bears were also on the list.

No one would ever accuse the crypto world of lacking merry pranksters. But all the same, there remained a strong undercurrent of unease in the crowd. Mainstream adoption appears to have stalled, and with the U.S. elections coming up, there is a big question mark over what regulation will look like going forward.

Beyond the protocols

Historically, scalability has been a major issue for blockchains with high fees and slow transaction speeds. Now, second-layer blockchains (so-called “layer-2 blockchains”) have made transactions both faster and cheaper, meaning scalability is no longer an issue for most use cases. The most popular layer-2 blockchains can handle millions of transactions per day without any hiccup.

Old-school with a side of crypto?

While some crypto companies are still looking for breakthrough successes, others are trying to convince traditional enterprises that they should add a crypto twist to their existing products.

Justin Kim, head of Asia at Ava Labs, a blockchain platform focused on decentralized apps (“dApps”) and enterprise blockchain deployments, noted that more organizations are launching their own custom blockchains on top of Avalanche.

Big backers, and bigger regional forces

In 2023, lower- and middle-income countries were driving cryptocurrency adoption; this year, adoption is spread more evenly between richer and poorer countries, said Diederik van Wersch, regional director of ASEAN and Hong Kong at blockchain data platform Chainalysis.

“The mainstream adoption of cryptocurrency could be a result of the launch of Bitcoin ETFs, which triggered an increase in the total value of Bitcoin activity across all regions,” van Wersch told TechCrunch.

In keeping with that, institutions are facilitating the adoption of cryptocurrency in nations such as Singapore and Indonesia, he said. The U.S. followed a similar pattern. When the U.S introduced a Bitcoin ETF, Siu said it was a step change for the market.

“Tokens that have institutional backing tend to do better. That’s how things are shaping up for crypto moving forward,” Siu said.

“In Singapore, we’re seeing a rise in the use of crypto merchant services, while in Indonesia, crypto is being used as a trading instrument and has become one of the fastest-growing crypto markets in the region with the highest year-over-year growth at nearly 200%,” van Wersch said.

That’s not all good news: As more people adopt it, there will likely be more crime, he added. “As adoption grows, so will crime. And today, crypto is encompassing all types of crime — including fraud and narcotics.”

Bullish on Telegram’s future (despite Durov’s arrest)

The arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France last month definitely led to an aftershock for the Telegram-linked Toncoin, which slumped in price in the wake of the news. But by the time KBW rolled around just a week later, the mood was buoyant.

Rushi Manche, co-founder of Movement Labs, told TechCrunch that Telegram had become a useful communication tool for many in the crypto community, and that was not likely to change in the short term.

“What happened to Pavel Durov and what’s happening with Telegram and TON is proof that decentralization is working quite well. Despite the fact that Pavel was arrested, everything was still working,” Siu told TechCrunch. “I would say it’s a net positive and, to me, shows the resilience and strength of decentralization and the benefits of running something on the blockchain. So I’m long-term bullish on TON and Telegram.”

Animoca Brands is an investor in TON, the blockchain that is deeply integrated into the messaging app.

Simon acknowledged one takeaway from the incident: It highlighted how new regulations need to be created to manage these virtual spaces independently, because there are no physical borders in the digital world and states can’t control what’s on the internet.

Regulation remains a major hurdle
Regulation time and again came up as the biggest concern among people we spoke to at KBW, and not just among those working in Asian crypto, but those from other regions, too.

“Until a few years ago, many blockchain builders had established their headquarters in Singapore,” Simon said. “Most recently, the UAE has emerged as the most industry-friendly country, providing clear regulations and guidelines within the nation.”

OpenAI could shake up its nonprofit structure next year

It’s looking increasingly likely that OpenAI will soon alter its complex corporate structure.

It’s looking increasingly likely that OpenAI will soon alter its complex corporate structure.

Reports earlier this week suggested that the AI company was in talks to raise $6.5 billion at a $150 billion pre-money valuation. Now Reuters says the deal is contingent on whether OpenAI can restructure and remove a profit cap for investors.

#openai #technology #newsonleo

In fact, according to Fortune, co-founder and CEO Sam Altman told employees at a company-wide meeting that OpenAI’s structure is likely to change next year, bringing it closer to a traditional for-profit business. OpenAI is currently structured so that its for-profit arm is controlled by a non-profit, which seems to frustrate investors.

“We remain focused on building AI that benefits everyone and as we’ve previously shared we’re working with our board to ensure that we’re best positioned to succeed in our mission,” OpenAI said in a statement. “The nonprofit is core to our mission and will continue to exist.”

Lawyers representing Sam Bankman-Fried, the FTX CEO and co-founder who was convicted of fraud and money laundering late last year, are seeking a new trial.

Following crypto exchange FTX’s collapse, Bankman-Fried was found guilty on all seven counts, then sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to pay $11 billion in forfeiture. He has been serving his sentence in Brooklyn.

#crypto #ftx #lawsuit

Bloomberg reports that Bankman-Fried’s appeal focuses on the behavior of US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, alleging that Kaplan’s rulings were “not just erroneous but unbalanced” and that the judge “continually ridiculed Bankman-Fried during trial, repeatedly criticized his demeanor, and signaled his disbelief of Bankman-Fried’s testimony.”

The appeal also claims that Kaplan “repeatedly mocked defense counsel” while helping the government make its case, and that he “improperly prodded” jurors to reach a quick verdict.

DeepWell DTx receives FDA clearance for its therapeutic video game developer tools

There’s something oddly refreshing about starting the day by solving the Wordle.

There’s something oddly refreshing about starting the day by solving the Wordle. According to DeepWell DTx, there’s a scientific explanation for why our brains might feel just a bit better after a quick break to play a game. In fact, DeepWell now has the FDA clearance to support its claim that video games can treat stress.

#newsonleo #deepwell #technology #gaming

With FDA clearance, DeepWell’s biofeedback software development kit is approved for over-the-counter use, meaning that patients can use its games as a supplement to other treatments for stress or hypertension. As Medicare weighs the benefits of reimbursing doctors for digital therapy software, it’s possible that DeepWell’s games could become eligible for reimbursement.

FDA-approved medical devices don’t have to be developed solely for medical purposes. Apple’s AirPods Pro just got FDA approval to serve as hearing aids, making them the first over-the-counter hearing aid software device. Consumer products like the Garmin watch and certain Apple Watch apps have also been approved to monitor conditions like atrial fibrillation and Parkinson’s disease. As rates of anxiety and depression escalate in the U.S., it’s no wonder that medical regulators are looking for solutions from unconventional sources, like a gaming developer kit.

“What I believe you’re seeing happening at the moment is a recognition of the mental health emergency we’re under and the resource constraints that we’ve got,” co-founder Ryan Douglas told TechCrunch. “What we’ve done is we’ve cleared a toolkit that allows media creators to connect media to the reimbursement stream that’s coming now for digital mental health.”

For over 20 years, Douglas has been designing therapeutic hardware and software, earning more than 30 patents for treatment systems and medical devices. Now, he is the president and CEO of NeuFluent, a venture studio for neurological products, which DeepWell is part of.

DeepWell doesn’t recommend its products to be used instead of talk therapy, but rather, as a supplement.

“We’ve seen amazing results, sometimes as much as four times more effective than talk therapy or a drug,” he said. “But in combination with talk therapy, it has been out of this world.”

As a proof of concept, DeepWell put out a virtual reality game on Meta Quest called Zengence, which it calls a “mental health action shooter.” The headset can sense the player’s breath, and by maintaining a consistent breathing pattern, it becomes easier to defeat enemies.

Games don’t need to have such overtly therapeutic mechanics to be useful. According to Douglas, even games like Super Mario or Animal Crossing can have positive effects.

Meta, Snapchat, and TikTok launch the new Thrive mental health initiative, and it's about time

Meta, Snapchat and TikTok are finally banding together to do something about the harmful effects of some of the content hosted on their platforms – and it’s about time.

In partnership with the Mental Health Coalition, the three brands are using a program called Thrive which is designed to flag and securely share information about harmful content, targeting content around suicide and self-harm.

#tiktok #socialmedia #snapchat #meta #mentalhealth #technology

A Meta blog post reads: “Like many other types of potentially problematic content, suicide and self-harm content is not limited to any one platform… That’s why we’ve worked with the Mental Health Coalition to establish Thrive, the first signal-sharing program to share signals about violating suicide and self-harm content.

“Through Thrive, participating tech companies will be able to share signals about violating suicide or self-harm content so that other companies can investigate and take action if the same or similar content is being shared on their platforms. Meta is providing the technical infrastructure that underpins Thrive… which enables signals to be shared securely.”

When a participating company like Meta discovers harmful content on its app, it shares hashes (anonymized code pertaining to pieces of content relating to self-harm or suicide) with other tech companies, so they can examine their own databases for the same content, as it tends to spread across platforms.

As long as there are platforms that rely on users uploading their own content, there will be those that violate regulations and spread harmful messages online. This could come in the form of grifters attempting to sell bogus courses, inappropriate content on channels aimed at kids, and content relating to suicide or self-harm. Accounts posting this kind of content are generally very good at skirting the rules and flying under the radar to reach their target audience; the content often being taken down too late.

It’s good to see social media platforms – which use comprehensive algorithms and casino-like architecture to keep their users addicted and automatically serve up content they’ll engage with – actually taking some responsibility and working together. This sort of ethical cooperation between the most popular social media apps is sorely needed. However, this should just be the first step on the road to success.

A sprig of elderberry, a sharp knife, a bit of brains, put all this together and you will get a simple technology for making a musical pipe :) !VSC

"As useful as a GOOD grad student" ― Surpasses Human Capability on Many Tasks (but not all!)

#ai #strawberry #chatgpt #technology

The Rapid Advancement of AI: Implications of GPT-4 and Beyond

Recent developments in artificial intelligence, particularly with models like GPT-4 and its successors, have sparked intense discussion about the current capabilities and future potential of AI systems. This article summarizes key points from a transcript discussing these advancements and their implications.

Key Observations

  1. Comparison to human Intelligence: Several experts and researchers have begun comparing the latest AI models to human intelligence levels. For instance:
    • A topmathematician described GPT-4 as "like a mediocre but not completely incompetent grad student."
    • Multiple postdoctoral researchers have found the AI as useful as a good graduate student in their fields.
    • In some specialized tasks, the AI has shown capabilities that would take human experts days to replicate.
  1. Performance Leap: The latest models show a significant jump in performance across various benchmarks:

    • From around 25-30% to 85% performance on certain tests.
    • This magnitude of improvement often signals a paradigm shift in machine learning approaches.
  2. Generalization Across Domains: The AI demonstrates high performance across diverse fields such as mathematics, computational fluid dynamics, and medical research.

  1. Comparison to Previous Models:

    • GPT-4 was initially compared to a smart high school student.
    • Newer models like "GPT-4 Turbo" (referred to as "01 preview" or "strawberry") are being compared to graduate students.
    • The upcoming full release ("01") is expected to be even more capable.
  2. Rapid Progress: The pace of advancement is notable:

    • Within about two years, AI capabilities have progressed from being compared to high school students to being compared to graduate students.
    • This aligns with predictions made by researchers like Leopold Aschenbrenner about the trajectory of AI development.

Implications and Reflections

  1. Potential AGI: The speaker suggests that these advancements might indicate we're approaching or have already achieved Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), though this remains a contentious claim.

  2. Economic and Scientific Impact: The focus is shifting from philosophical debates about "true" intelligence to the practical impact of these AI systems on scientific research and economic productivity.

  3. Training Paradigms: New training approaches, possibly combining techniques like Chain of Thought, reflection, and Monte Carlo tree search, seem to be driving significant improvements even on existing model architectures.

  1. Future Projections:

    • If the current trend continues, AI might soon be comparable to postdoctoral researchers and eventually world-class experts in various fields.
    • The release of GPT-5 and other advanced models could further accelerate this progress.
  2. Latent Capabilities: The speaker notes that even after two years, new capabilities of GPT-4 are still being discovered, suggesting that newer models might have even more "latent abilities" to be uncovered over time.

Challenges to Previous Assumptions

  1. AI Slowdown: The speaker acknowledges that previous predictions about AI development slowing down might have been premature, given the recent rapid advancements.

  2. Cost-Benefit Analysis: While current advanced AI services might be expensive (e.g., $1,000-$2,000 per month), their capabilities might justify the cost for many applications.

  3. Philosophical Debates: The speaker argues that debates over the nature of "true" intelligence or consciousness in AI systems, while important, shouldn't overshadow discussions about the practical impacts and implications of these technologies.

Conclusion

The rapid advancement of AI capabilities, as exemplified by models like GPT-4 and its successors, is forcing a reevaluation of the timeline for achieving human-level AI in various domains. While debates about the nature of AI intelligence continue, the focus is increasingly shifting to the practical implications and potential societal impacts of these powerful AI systems. As we approach the possible advent of AGI, it becomes crucial to consider the economic, scientific, and ethical ramifications of these technological leaps.

This summary provides an in-depth overview of the key points discussed in the transcript, focusing on the rapid advancements in AI capabilities, comparisons to human intelligence levels, and the potential implications for various fields. The article structure allows for a clear presentation of the main ideas while providing context and analysis.

OpenAI o1 - Questoinable Empathy

OpenAI o1 came out just in time for me to add it to my 2024 Q3 benchmarks on AI empathy (to be published next week). The results for o1 were at once encouraging and concerning. O1 has an astonishing ability to put aside the typical LLM focus on facts and systems and focus on feelings and emotions when directed to do so. It also has a rather alarming propensity to provide inconsistent and illogical reasons for its answers.

#openai #technology #chatbot #agi

Developing Empathetic LLMs
Although the amount of funding pales in comparison to other areas of AI, over $1.5 billion has been invested in companies like Hume (proprietary LLM), Inflection AI (Pi.ai proprietary LLM), and BambuAI (commercial LLM) in order to develop empathetic AIs.

My partners and I have also put considerable effort into this area and achieved rather remarkable results through the selection of the right underlying commercial model (e.g., Llama, Claude, Gemini, Mistral, etc), prompt engineering, RAG, fine-tuning, and deep research into empathy.

This work has been critical to better understanding and evaluating LLMs for empathy. Our own LLM, Emy (not commercialized, but part of a study at the University of Houston), will be included in next week’s benchmarks.

Conclusion
Jonathan Haidt author of The Righteous Mind said, “We were never designed to listen to reason. When you ask people moral questions, time their responses, and scan their brains, their answers, and brain activation patterns indicate that they reach conclusions quickly and produce reasons later only to justify what they’ve decided.” There is also evidence this is true for non-moral decisions.

O1 is undoubtedly a leap forward in power. And, as many people have rightly said, we need to be careful about the use of LLMs until they can explain themselves, perhaps even if they sometimes just make them up as humans may do. I hope that justifications don’t become the “advanced” AI equivalent of the current generation’s hallucinations and fabrications (something humans also do). However, reasons should at least be consistent with the statement being made … although contemporary politics seems to throw that out the window too!

AI Phobia: How News Headlines Shape Public Fear of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a cornerstone of modern technological advancement, promising significant contributions across various domains. However, alongside its rapid development, AI has also become a focal point of fear and uncertainty for many people. This fear, has been termed "AI phobia" by scholars and research shows it is significantly influenced by the media's portrayal of AI, particularly through news headlines. A recent study titled "Fear of Artificial Intelligence? NLP, ML, and LLMs Based Discovery of AI-Phobia and Fear Sentiment Propagation by AI News," looks closely at the impact of AI news headlines on public sentiment. By analyzing nearly seventy thousand AI-related news headlines, the study reveals the powerful role of media in shaping public perceptions of AI.

#ai #technology #ai

The Power of Headlines: Amplifying Fear

News headlines are a critical component of the media's influence on public sentiment because they serve as the first point of contact for readers and set the tone for the entire article. Often, people do not even read the entire article but just take away the headline. Moreover, headlines play a particularly significant role in the context of AI because public understanding is still limited. Many individuals do not understand AI, so quick media soundbites and attention-grabbing headlines can have a major impact on how they feel about the technology. TO explore the types of sentiments that are expressed in headlines about AI, researchers used advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques, machine learning (ML), and large language models (LLMs) to analyze the sentiment and themes present in AI-related headlines.

Their findings reveal a concerning trend: a substantial proportion of AI headlines are framed in a way that induces fear and anxiety. Terms such as "dangerous," "threat," "risk," and "existential threat" are often used, which contributes to the public's growing unease about AI. Importantly, this fear-mongering is not just a reflection of public sentiment; researchers argue it actively shapes it, leading to a cycle where fear begets more fear.

Measuring the Impact of Fear-Inducing Headlines

The study employed multiple sentiment analysis tools to assess the emotional tone of the headlines, including VADER (a lexicon and rule-based sentiment analysis tool that scores words from most extreme negative to most extreme positive), AFINN (a tool that assigns scores to words with negative scores indicating negative sentiment and positive scores indicating positive sentiment), and TextBlob (a library that provides a simple API that returns a polarity score indicating a negative sentiment, a positive sentiment, and neutrality).

The results showed a marked presence of negative sentiment, with approximately 40% of the headlines conveying fear or anxiety about AI. These findings suggest that the media is not just reporting on public fears about AI but is also contributing to their amplification.

Moreover, the study highlighted the use of sensational language in headlines. Such language is designed to grab attention but often at the cost of nuanced reporting. The emphasis on fear-inducing language in headlines can lead to skewed public perceptions, where the risks of AI are exaggerated while its benefits are downplayed.

AI Phobia: Consequences for Society and Policy

The spread of AI phobia through media headlines has far-reaching implications. Researchers found that public fear of AI can influence policy decisions, leading to overly cautious or restrictive regulations that block innovation. It can also affect public engagement with AI, causing people to reject or fear AI technologies that could otherwise improve their lives.

The study warns that if left unchecked, the spread of AI phobia could have harmful effects on the advancement of AI as a science. It advocates for a more balanced approach to AI reporting, where the potential risks are discussed alongside the benefits, and where the science of AI is presented in a way that is both accurate and accessible to the general public.

Recommendations: Towards Balanced AI Reporting
To counter the current trend of fear-inducing AI headlines, the study offers several recommendations. First, it calls for the development of an AI news ontology that distinguishes between AI as a science and AI applications. This could help journalists and media outlets provide more accurate and contextually rich coverage of AI topics.

Second, the study suggests that media outlets collaborate with AI experts to produce more informed and balanced reporting. This collaboration could involve regular fact-checking and expert commentary to ensure that AI-related news is not only sensational but also informative and grounded in reality.

Finally, the study emphasizes the importance of public education on AI. By improving the general population's understanding of AI and its implications, it becomes easier to foster a more informed and rational public discourse about AI, reducing the impact of fear-inducing headlines.

Conclusion
The study from Rutgers University sheds light on the important role that news headlines play in shaping public perceptions of AI. As AI continues to develop and integrate into various aspects of society, it is important that media reporting on AI is balanced, accurate, and free from undue sensationalism. By adopting the study's recommendations, we can work towards a media landscape that informs the public about AI in a way that empowers rather than frightens.

What is a token window?

A token window is a concept in computer science, particularly in the context of operating systems and programming languages. It refers to a specific region of memory that is used to store and manage tokens, which are small units of data that represent a single unit of information.

In a token window, each token is typically represented by a unique identifier, and the window itself is a contiguous block of memory that is allocated to store these tokens. The tokens within the window are usually arranged in a specific order, such as a linked list or an array, to facilitate efficient access and manipulation.

Token windows are commonly used in various applications, including:

  1. Compilers: Token windows are used to store the tokens generated by the lexical analyzer (tokenizer) during the compilation process. These tokens are then used by the parser to build the abstract syntax tree (AST) of the program.
  2. Text editors: Token windows can be used to store the tokens generated by the editor's lexer, allowing for efficient searching, replacing, and formatting of text.
  3. Programming languages: Some programming languages, such as Python, use token windows to store the tokens generated by the lexer, which are then used by the parser to build the AST.

The benefits of token windows include:

  1. Efficient memory usage: Token windows allow for efficient storage and management of tokens, reducing memory usage and improving performance.
  2. Fast token access: The contiguous block of memory used by the token window enables fast access to tokens, making it suitable for applications that require rapid token processing.
  3. Improved code organization: Token windows can help organize code by providing a clear separation between tokens and the code that processes them.

In summary, a token window is a memory region that stores and manages tokens, providing a efficient and organized way to handle small units of data in various applications.

What are the largest token windows?

The size of a token window can vary greatly depending on the specific application, programming language, and use case. However, here are some examples of large token windows:

  1. Python's Token Window: The Python interpreter uses a token window to store the tokens generated by the lexer. The size of this window is typically around 64KB to 128KB, depending on the version of Python and the specific implementation.
  1. GCC's Token Window: The GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) uses a token window to store the tokens generated by the lexer during the compilation process. The size of this window can range from 256KB to 1MB or more, depending on the complexity of the code being compiled.
  2. Java's Token Window: The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) uses a token window to store the tokens generated by the lexer during the compilation process. The size of this window can range from 128KB to 512KB or more, depending on the complexity of the code being compiled.
  3. Lexical Analyzer's Token Window: In general, lexical analyzers used in text editors, compilers, and other applications can have token windows ranging from 1KB to 16KB or more, depending on the size of the input text and the complexity of the tokenization process.

Some notable examples of large token windows include:

  • The lexical analyzer used in the GNU Emacs text editor, which has a token window of around 1MB.
  • The lexer used in the Apache HTTP server, which has a token window of around 512KB.
  • The lexical analyzer used in the MySQL database server, which has a token window of around 256KB.

It's worth noting that the size of a token window can vary greatly depending on the specific requirements of the application, and it's not uncommon for token windows to be dynamically resized or allocated on demand.

CNBC -- Why ChatGPT Creator OpenAI Is Having A Make Or Break Moment

The success or failure of OpenAI in navigating these complex issues will likely have far-reaching implications for the future of AI development and its impact on society. As the company moves forward, all eyes will be on Sam Altman and his team to see if they can maintain OpenAI's position at the forefront of the AI revolution while addressing the ethical and structural challenges they face.

I saw something about this. Sounds like they're facing some uphill battles?!

As OpenAI navigates these challenges, it must balance several competing priorities:

  1. Innovation: Continuing to push the boundaries of AI technology and maintain its lead in the field.
  2. Ethics: Addressing concerns about AI safety and adhering to its original mission of benefiting humanity.
  3. Profitability: Meeting the expectations of investors and transitioning to a sustainable business model.
  4. transparency: Managing public perception and maintaining trust in its technology and leadership.

So, are they not a public company? I didn't see anything here about catering to investors/shareholders

No they are still in the start up mode, with funding rounds.

The next major test for OpenAI will be the development and launch of GPT-5, the next iteration of its AI model. The company faces intense pressure to ensure that this advancement is safe, transparent, and reliable, while also striving to maintain its lead in the AI arms race.

I wonder how many of the new AI tools that keep popping up will be able to stay in the competition. Some of them are free but how long can they remain that way and survive?

Despite these challenges, OpenAI continues to attract significant interest from major tech players. Microsoft has already invested billions, and companies like Apple and NVIDIA are reportedly considering investments. This "party round" of funding reflects OpenAI's position as the hottest name in Silicon Valley, although some observers question whether the sky-high valuations match the company's actual returns.

Almost everything has at least an AI component or is completely AI. I happen to like the timesaving aspect of the tools that are being created. The more that can be automated the better as far as I am concerned. Of course, it does take some work to figure how to set up the automation but once that is done...

Not at this point but it will.

Generative AI is a new form of compute.

The company's unique hybrid structure - a for-profit subsidiary governed by a nonprofit board - has drawn criticism. Some argue that this arrangement is untenable and conflicts with OpenAI's original mission. Former colleagues and co-founders have expressed concern that the focus on commercial success has overshadowed the initial commitment to safe and responsible AI development.

I haven't ever heard of a business structured like that. In a way it sounds like serving two masters.

Altman, described as both a visionary and a polarizing figure, has steered OpenAI through turbulent waters. In November 2023, he was briefly ousted as CEO by the board, only to be reinstated less than a week later. This leadership crisis highlighted the tensions within the company, particularly regarding its shift from a nonprofit structure to a more profit-oriented model.

I've always wondered how a company survives with a non-profit structure. My cynical self says it's just a way of not having to pay taxes.

Founded in 2015 as a nonprofit with the mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity, OpenAI has since become a major disruptor in the tech industry, forcing giants like Google, Microsoft, and Apple to reorient their businesses around AI.

Under the leadership of CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI has achieved remarkable milestones, including a high-profile partnership with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into iPhones, and a potential new funding round that could value the company at $100 billion. This rapid ascent, however, has not been without controversy and challenges.

So, it's been around almost 10 years already? Wow! Trying to remember how long Alexa has been around. Or Siri. Feels like AI has been evolving for a really long time.

It takes 10 years to become an overnight success.

This is why people looking for instant results are foolish.

That said the industry is moving at the speed of light. We have to get on board and build quickly.

OpenAI's Moment of Truth: Balancing Innovation, Ethics, and profit

OpenAi, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, stands at a critical juncture in its meteoric rise to the top of the tech world.

Can't really pick or choose which is the highest priority. Quite a juggling act.

Port of Seattle reveals details of ransomware attack, says it refused to pay criminal organization

The Port of Seattle said some of its data may be at risk of being posted online after it refused to pay a ransom demanded by a criminal organization responsible for a cyberattack that took place nearly three weeks ago.

The Port revealed new details on Friday about the Aug. 24 cyberattack that impacted various operations, including at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

#newsonleo #technology #ransomware #attack

“Our investigation has determined that the unauthorized actor was able to gain access to certain parts of our computer systems and was able to encrypt access to some data,” the Port said.

According to the Port, the ransomware attack was carried out by Rhysida, which claimed responsibility for cyberattacks on the British Library last year and the City of Columbus, Ohio this summer. It also targets hospitals and other government institutions.

The Port said that Rhysida claims to have stolen data and may post it “on their darkweb site” as a result of the refusal to pay the ransom.

More from the Port:

“Our investigation of what data the actor took is ongoing, but it does appear that some Port data was obtained by the actor in mid-to-late August. Assessment of the data taken is complex and takes time, but we are committed to these efforts and notifying potentially impacted stakeholders as appropriate. In particular, if we identify that the actor obtained employee or passenger personal information, we will carry out our responsibilities to inform them.”

The attack and the Port’s response to isolate critical systems resulted in an outage that shut down WiFi at the airport, caused delays to baggage services, and disrupted many screens inside the terminal showing flight information.

Airport workers had to resort to manual methods, such as writing flight numbers and carousel locations on large sheets of paper and issuing handwritten boarding passes and bag tags.

The outage did not impact flights or security checkpoints at Sea-Tac Airport, or cruise travel.

The travel experience at Sea-Tac is now “normal,” the airport announced Wednesday.

However, the airport and Port’s websites are still down. Other services such as the airport’s lost and found and visitor pass program are still not accessible.

Some maritime operations managed by the Port of Seattle are also still in recovery mode.

“Enterprise applications essential to business functions, such as accounts payable services, contract management, phone service, and the public website were affected in the attack,” the Port said. “Many of these services have been restored with temporary or workaround solutions, although some key systems remain offline.”

AI evolution and Corporate Agility: Insights from Eric Schmidt and Industry Experts

In a recent discussion, industry leaders delved into the future of AI and the challenges faced by tech giants in maintaining their competitive edge. The conversation centered around comments made by Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, touching on the evolution of AI models and Google's position in the AI race against OpenAi.

AI's Next Leap: Combining Capabilities

Schmidt highlighted three key areas of AI development set to converge in the near future: large context windows, agents, and text-to-action capabilities. This combination is expected to yield powerful outcomes, potentially revolutionizing how we interact with and utilize AI.

Large context windows will allow AI to process and retain vast amounts of information, effectively giving AI "employees" instant access to an organization's entire knowledge base. This capability could dramatically enhance decision-making processes within companies.

The development of AI agents suggests a future where AI assistants can operate more autonomously, handling complex tasks across various domains such as marketing, design, and technology.

Text-to-action capabilities represent the bridge between AI's digital realm and the physical world. As AI gains the ability to program and interact with an increasingly digitized environment, its potential for real-world impact grows significantly.

The discussion also touched on the evolutionary basis of intelligence, noting that the need to navigate the physical world was a primary driver in the development of intelligence in biological organisms. This insight could have profound implications for the future direction of AI development, especially in robotics.

The discussion drew parallels to Facebook's early success, attributed to its organizational heuristic that empowered developers to ship code quickly. This agility allowed Facebook to outpace competitors like Yahoo and MySpace.

The speakers emphasized that in the fast-paced world of consumer Internet and AI development, speed and willingness to take risks are crucial attributes. They argued that internal organizational design, more than physical presence in the office, determines a company's ability to innovate rapidly.

Lessons for the Future

The conversation highlighted the importance of organizational agility in maintaining a competitive edge in the tech industry. Studies of Fortune 100 companies have shown that those adopting more flexible, autonomous team structures and leveraging community and dashboard tools (elements of the EXO model) significantly outperformed their peers in terms of shareholder returns.

While Google was acknowledged for its initial lead in AI development and its recent impressive response with Gemini, the discussion underscored the challenges large companies face in balancing control and agility. The speakers argued that the ability to be nimble is now the key to success in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

As AI continues to advance and reshape industries, companies of all sizes will need to reconsider their organizational structures and work cultures to foster innovation and maintain competitiveness in this new era of technological development.

What is a resource based economy?

A resource-based economy is an economic system proposed by some futurists and social theorists as an alternative to current monetary-based economies. The core idea is to manage and distribute resources directly based on abundance and need, rather than through money or markets.

Key aspects of a resource-based economy typically include:

  1. Technology-driven resource management: Using advanced technology and scientific methods to survey, track, and efficiently allocate resources.

  2. Elimination of money: Resources and goods are distributed without the use of money, credit, barter, or any other form of debt or exchange.

  1. Sustainability focus: Emphasis on sustainable use of resources and environmental preservation.

  2. Automation: Heavy reliance on automation and artificial intelligence for production and distribution of goods and services.

  3. Meeting human needs: The primary goal is to meet aLL human needs and improve quality of life, rather than generate profit.

  1. Global cooperation: Often envisioned as a global system requiring international cooperation.

  2. Education and social change: Proponents argue it would require significant changes in education and social values.

The concept was popularized by Jacque Fresco through The Venus Project, though similar ideas have been proposed by others. It's important to note that while proponents argue it could solve many current economic and environmental problems, critics question its feasibility and potential drawbacks.

How do robotics play into the concept of a resource based economy?

Robotics plays a central role in the concept of a resource-based economy. Here's how robotics is envisioned to function within this economic model:

  1. Automation of labor:
    • Robots and AI systems would handle most manual and cognitive labor, from manufacturing to service jobs.
    • This widespread automation is seen as a way to free humans from repetitive or dangerous work.
  1. Resource Extraction and management:

    • robotic systems would be used for efficient and sustainable resource extraction.
    • Automated systems would monitor resource levels, usage patterns, and environmental impacts in real-time.
  2. Production and distribution:

    • Robotic factories would produce goods with minimal human intervention.
    • Automated transportation and logistics systems would handle the distribution of goods.
  1. Infrastructure maintenance:

  2. Environmental stewardship:

    • Robotic systems would be deployed for environmental monitoring, cleanup, and restoration efforts.
  3. Scientific research and development:

    • Robots and AI would accelerate scientific research, potentially leading to breakthroughs in energy, materials, and other fields.
  1. Healthcare:

    • Robotic systems would assist in healthcare, from diagnosis to surgery and care for the elderly or disabled.
  2. Decision support:

    • AI systems would analyze data and provide insights to help make optimal decisions about resource allocation and societal needs.
  3. Customization and on-demand production:

    • Robotic systems could enable highly customized, on-demand production of goods, potentially reducing waste and overproduction.

The idea is that by leveraging robotics and AI, a resource-based economy could produce abundance while minimizing human labor and environmental impact. However, this raises questions about the role of human work, the control and programming of these systems, and the potential risks of over-reliance on technology.

How would robots accelerate scientific research under a resource based economy?

In a resource-based economy, robots and advanced AI systems could potentially accelerate scientific research in several ways:

  1. High-throughput experimentation:
    • robotic systems could conduct a large number of experiments simultaneously, vastly increasing the speed of data collection.
    • This is already happening in fields like materials science and drug discovery, where robotic labs can test thousands of compounds rapidly.
  1. 24/7 operation:

    • Unlike human researchers, robots can work continuously without breaks, potentially speeding up long-term experiments and data collection.
  2. Data analysis and pattern recognition:

    • AI systems could analyze vast amounts of scientific data much faster than humans, potentially uncovering patterns or correlations that might be missed otherwise.
    • machine learning algorithms could generate and test hypotheses at a rapid pace.
  1. Simulation and modeling:

    • Advanced AI could create and run complex simulations of physical, chemical, or biological systems, allowing for rapid testing of theories without physical experimentation.
  2. literature review and knowledge synthesis:

    • AI systems could continuously scan and analyze scientific literature, helping researchers stay up-to-date and identifying potential connections across disciplines.
  3. Autonomous research planning:

    • AI systems could help design optimal research strategies, potentially identifying the most promising avenues for investigation.
  1. Precision measurements and observations:

    • Robotic systems could perform extremely precise measurements and observations, potentially beyond human capabilities, in fields like astronomy or particle physics.
  2. Hazardous environment research:

    • Robots could conduct research in environments too dangerous for humans, such as deep ocean, space, or radioactive areas.
  1. Reproducibility:

    • Robotic systems could enhance the reproducibility of experiments by eliminating human error and variability.
  2. Interdisciplinary integration:

    • AI systems could more easily integrate knowledge and methodologies from different scientific disciplines, potentially leading to novel insights.

In a resource-based economy, these capabilities might be further enhanced by unrestricted access to research facilities and resources, as well as global collaboration and data sharing.

However, it's important to note that while robots and AI can greatly assist and accelerate certain aspects of research, human creativity, intuition, and critical thinking would likely still play crucial roles in scientific discovery and interpretation of results. The integration of human and machine intelligence in research is a complex topic with ongoing debate in the scientific community.

That's same to me and I think you can connect with it deeply if you watch the Soul Land( the anime scene show on the video also) anime where I heart the music for the first time.

I will check if it is available on Netflix. The short scene in the song tells me it will be an interesting watch

I am laughing to hear one statement from my friend. My friend stated that I am in love just because I am watching a lot of romantic dramas. Means seriously? As well as I can remember I didn't met such a lady with which I can think about love. When I start watching something, I love to watch similar kinds of things in a flow and right now I am on that track. Whatever the statement was entertaining and I am planning to increase suspense.

After ocean impact, rescue teams retrieved the capsule using a “Dragon’s nest” boat for final safety checks before the crew disembarked.
