U.S. Homebuyer Median Down Payment Hits Record $67,500
Based on a new report by Redfin, the typical down payment for U.S. homebuyers hit a record high of $67,500 in June 2024, up 14.8% from $58,788 a year earlier. This was the 12th consecutive month the median down payment rose year over year.
The nearly-15% jump in the median down payment significantly outpaced the increase in home prices, which were up 4% in June year over year.
According to new data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau, sales of newly built, single-family homes in July 2024 rose 10.6% to a 739,000 seasonally adjusted annual rate from significant upward revisions in June 2024.
The pace of new home sales in July is up 5.6% from a year earlier. After the notably higher revisions for the May and June data, new home sales from January through July of 2024 are up 2.6% in 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

The UK government recently announced changes to planning laws to 'turbocharge' the building of 1.5M new homes over the next five years.
The gist of these changes are that central government is going to have more power to over-ride local council plans where local councils fail to plan to meet nationally appointed local targets.
One slight carrot is that local councils are allowed to use 'grey belt' land, or land on the green belt which has previously been built on.

New Home Sales in America Jump in July
According to new data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau, sales of newly built, single-family homes in July 2024 rose 10.6% to a 739,000 seasonally adjusted annual rate from significant upward revisions in June 2024.

What you see in the picture above, is only a small portion of the building, 1/4 of it maybe? It keeps going for a long time, where you see the burned out porches, also likely the apartments where the fire started at first glance, it was the most damaged area and appears to be the hottest point.
The photo ends but on the other side, the building bends again into another corner to an additional wing/leg of the building where the fire also spread very quickly.
