I have trouble thinking of current AI products as real intelligence, at least in terms of self-awareness. I think even the least intelligent people are always thinking of something. Machines don't do that. They don't run any unnecessary processes.
I’m not sure self-awareness is possible, and if it is it is probably a long way away. I do think it will get to the point where it can fool us that it’s self aware though very very soon.
If it’s complex enough, there may be “emergent properties” that could be a sort of consciousness. LLMs have some emergent properties that have surprised data scientists. But they are still not at the level of awareness.
