Congrats! The only one you need to compare to is yourself. Otherwise, there are always others who have more, and others who have less.
That's a good benchmark. In that case, one's current performance will always be better than the previous one provided that he or she keeps growing.
Two things here. One, which you remarked, is that you have to keep growing. And that's not always the case.
The other is you can measure/track growth against yourself to see how you're doing.
