@jk6276 gave a great description of how the upvote economy works here:

1. Users stake LEO in their wallet
2. Upvotes are based on how much stake a user holds
3. Rewards from posts/upvotes are split 50/50 to authors and curators
4. Rewards are paid out every 7 days
