Where I live we don't see this phenomenon of consumerism so much, but it is true that when it is in excess it is harmful, and also to the environment.

Good if your local shops are not placing everything on polystyrene then double wrapping with cling wrap, all a total waste. Growing up meat would be in wax wrap paper, brown paper outer to pack together.
