I think the hatred was it just didn't make at the box office what was spent on it.
Was one of the 1st big failures that proved you could not buy viewers and then it just became the "thing" to hate on it.
I don't think that many people actually hated it, but i could be wrong
If we look at the numbers lots of ppl like Water World, there is always a group that F up scores giving it 1/10
It was a great story and could have been better of course but overall, a fantastic popcorn movie.
