Perplexity AI submitted a bid on Saturday to TikTok parent ByteDance, proposing that Perplexity merge with TikTok U.S., CNBC has learned.
The new structure would allow for most of ByteDance’s existing investors to retain their equity stakes and would bring more video to Perplexity, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Though any potential transaction would likely take months to complete, President-elect Donald Trump said he “most likely” would give TikTok 90 more days to work out a deal.
I don't know if this would be a good idea overall. As far as people @ D computer R concerned, it seems like a good deal. My concern is w/ the timing of D behind-the-scenes activity. If direct connection to PRC networks is severed, then OK.
The folks at Perplexity have been funded pretty well but they need something to truly survive, so they will try to hitch on anything they see as the opportunity to remain viable. There is no way Perplexity can compete against Google in the near future. Actually Google will probably buy them out at some point if not Amazon lol.
First thing's first: separate TikTok from Bytedance and therefore to the connection Bytedance has with the CCP and therefore the PRC. After that, Perplexity.AI can pursue ownership of TikTok.
It sounds simple, but separating TikTok from ByteDance isn’t just a quick legal maneuver—ByteDance is a Chinese company subject to China’s laws, and untangling those ties would be difficult? Perplexity.AI or any other company would face massive financial and regulatory hurdles to acquire and operate TikTok. None of sounds like it could happen overnight so is it a better bet that TikTok will be banned eventually? There is so much that Trump and his administration has to deal with so who knows how any of it pans out. My wife loves TikTok I feel bad for her lol.
You just explained concerns I was hinting at. I'm not expecting it to be done overnight, but the first hurdle to overcome is untangling TikTok-- actually, it's network infrastructure-- from that of China. All else falls N2 place N due time.
