Looks like an interesting application but I'll have to wait for it to come out and test it out before making any decisions. Sounds nice and it definitely rewards authors more.

Yea but for some reason, I can see it being a closed group kind of thing. Since 8 people literally decide exactly which topics they care about and I think most of the whales there are probably going to be part of a small group. It seems complicated if they pick the 8 people incorrectly.

Yes it is a closed group for all but comments. Like the post said, a way to ensure the quality of content they want and to be able to give authors of that stuff a place.
I am sure they will go for some "big" names in that field. We might not know them but they could be known. The fact they have 300K following is a good starting point.
