The business model definitely is a key reason why it is different. Just wondering, would this also apply to anything VC funded as well?

Yes the VC funding is what set the stage for all of this.
VC lend money with a long term horizon, usually 7 or 8 years. They are very patient, allowing the platforms to build up users. However, at a certain point they want to get paid. Hence the systems need to monetize. That is where the battle between users and the VCs starts.
Of course, the users lose.
