Yes the VC funding is what set the stage for all of this.
VC lend money with a long term horizon, usually 7 or 8 years. They are very patient, allowing the platforms to build up users. However, at a certain point they want to get paid. Hence the systems need to monetize. That is where the battle between users and the VCs starts.
Of course, the users lose.
