I have been talking a lot about engagement lately and I do various things in an attempt to increase the overall engagement, boosting the numbers and to set a new standard on this social platform.
I have recently announced that I am giving away a total of 25 LEO per week and I know there are people out there who doesn't believe in this approach, and that's basically the reason for this post. I want to shed some light on some things and I will talk more in-depth about my reasons for doing the things I do.
Let's start with the fact that I am, have always been and will forever be a giver. I am a sucker for charity & goodwill and I truly believe in the pay-it-forward mentality. Karma is another thing I believe in, and that fits perfectly in this whole thing as well.
One question I've been getting, and something I have thought about several times as well is this:
- Is it good to give away 25 LEO per week, straight from my own pockets, just to boost the numbers a bit in terms of comments or is there a better way of doing things?
The truth is that I would've loved to keep the tokens for myself, as those tokens are coming from my stake which basically means that I am not growing as quickly as I could.. But, I am grateful for the support I have, the opportunity and the awesome community so I want to pay it forward, as that is simply put the best thing I can do to give something back.
As I do the things I do in an attempt of bringing more attention towards real & active engagement which reflects a healthy and thriving platform. The long haul goal is to take some of the awesome amount of engagement from the daily posts from @leomarkettalk and push some of that elsewhere instead, because we are in desperate need of real engagement.
We need to attract outsiders and comments are vital to look healthy and active. Those people who still doesn't seem capable of understanding that a social platform must be social are just putting their heads in the sand. They are waiting for a miracle to happen instead of doing something.
A comment per day is extremely easy to do. Ten (10) comments per day are more difficult, but it's doable if you want Hive & LeoFinance to succeed. Anything more than 10 would be awesome. If you are active and consuming content on a daily basis, take a minute and write a meaningful comment on every third article you read or whatever. Find a good system that works for you. Each comment makes a difference in the long haul, and that is what literally everyone is claiming to be here for.
The LEO I give away is coming from my contributions. I contribute and I am being rewarded for my contributions. What I do with my stake and my rewards is entirely up to me, but I am giving something back because I want us to succeed. I am trying to pave the way for others..
- I am trying to set a new standard.
I want people to understand how important engagement is and I don't mind paying people for comments. You see, what I want from all of this is simply to change people's behaviour and approach. I hope that some of the people who are active and making comments on my content, within the LeoFinance Engagement League or within the @leomarkettalk posts will look outside of these places shortly so they engage and make comments elsewhere. I want this to spread like wildfire and if that means that I have to "pay people" for a while, I'm okay with that.
We need to socialize on a social platform for that platform to look active. It's that simple. Without comments it looks inactive, stagnant or even dying..
- And that is far from what we want!
With the new hardfork, I am sure we will see comments be rewarded more often and comments on LeoFinance is already being rewarded frequently. From all types of users. From the smallest cub to Toruk. We've seen upvotes across the community for a long period of time.
It's time to step up your game and take a piece of the pie. Set a goal of 5 comments per day if you haven't been making comments for a while. Ten comments per day if you're more active. Everything adds up over time and the most important part is to look like an active, helpful and healthy community.
That's how we will see green numbers on the charts while other cryptos are dropping like dead flies. We can comment our way to the top, so why shouldn't we?
Comments will take us to the next level, but a lot of people aren't willing to put in the effort. They seem to believe that everything will be fine sooner or later. I figured that most people should know better by now..
- Everyone should know that a social platform must be social to succeed.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
What is considered a green number on the charts? More comments than the last week or month?
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Think he's referring to coin value as it's a comparison to other cryptocurrencies..
More comments leads to higher values of Leo, hive and all dem sweet little tokens
But could be wrong there
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
It could be but I am not sure. However I don't know if more activity (comments) on the blockchain directly translate into green prices. It might help the retention rate of users though.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Well, here's how I think about it:
More comments = activity = a healthy community.
These are things outsiders are looking for. The overall engagement will play a crucial part for outsiders and it will most certainly be one of the things an outsider base his decisions on. To join or ignore. I'm positive that engagement will- and can be the game changer.
More people = increased token distribution = value.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Yeah, something to add is quality of content and interesting topics. For me looking at the current mainstream social media there's some fun to be had there but so much garbage as well. So many promo messages and silly discussions without anyone actually listening to the counter arguments.
Hive is actually already more interesting in that regard.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
That's exactly what I mean!

!LUV
I completely agree with your ideas. I always reward comments with a decent upvote and also a share of SBI if I have any unstaked Hive in my wallet. That is on my own comments. On comments to other posts, I always upvote if they are good (hmm... do we get curation on comment upvotes?). And personally I try to write at least a few comments per day. Don't know if I get to ten, but I try to do at least a few.
Anyway, keep up the good effort!
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
There's a 50/50 split on LeoFinance, so you earn 50% of the value from your upvotes.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
i am voting on all meaningful comments on my posts. curve or not. it is easier now as the price went up some because it was hard to skip over the dust vote.
My upvote is currently worth less than $0.01, but I still upvote comments, and not just/only under my own posts.
I think it's a superb thing to do. Even though it's worth less than $0.01, everything adds up over time.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Great approach. Attention is often more valuable than money.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
I think it will be even better after the next HF. I'm sure more comments will be rewarded after that.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
On what basis are these thoughts? Really interesting.
!LUV
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
there are some changes in the hf. i know the time frame will change, not 100% about the vote curve.
Yes, the reward curve is the most interesting question in this situation.

It is difficult to speak for someone other than yourself, which is why you have to start with yourself. 10 comments a day is the minimum from which everyone can push off.

I like your theme: Pay It Forward.
I like your idea to reward and stimulate engagement.
I really believe your right to add more Social to our Social Media.
But I am unclear from reading the post how people win the 25 Leo rewards.
Thanks, I would like to create a chain of similar efforts, starting from your anchor, but need to understand it better.
Thanks.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
It's basically like this:
The 10 LEO is given away to users who have made at least one comment on any of my posts, from the time I publish my "Let's Talk" posts until the time I send the prizes.
It's an on-going "contest" and will continue until I officially cancel it.
That goes to 2 randomly selected users who have placed themselves within the top 20 of the LeoFinance engagement league. So they get 2.5 LEO each.
This is a prize for random users who have been active in the @leomarkettalk posts.
You can read everything about this in one of my other posts:

Agree with most of it and said it before I think it's awesome what you're doing. However we don't have to just LOOK like an active, helpful and healthy community we have to BE (or become) that. Now I've not been around long enough to judge if it already is or is well on its way to becoming that. But I can definitely say the community has been helpful and filled with a lot of people with good intentions trying hard. In the end if the user base grows there will automatically be more comments, even with a lower comment per person rate.
I guess it's that organic explosive growth that will eventually take over and make something really gain traction. But for now I don't see anything wrong with incentives here and there to get people started with some more extrinsic motivation. Don't neglect your own stack though ;-)
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
That's basically what I'm going for. I want people to step up their game and put in some time and effort to make a lot of comments. Others are likely to join in on the fun and make comments if they see a bunch of people already doing that. With time, we will have changed the entire standard for how to "engage" on this platform.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
I'm sure they will, that's how Facebook started, friend invites you --> make an account --> not much happening --> o he/she's on here too? let's have another look..
And before you know it everyone's doing it :-)
Only thing is, right now you need some technical knowledge, quite a bit more than just a username, email and password
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
That is very true, which is why I want people to share their success-stories. Those stories are awesome for marketing purposes. Especially as it's word-of-mouth marketing.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Nicely written. I also believe in karma and understand that my every action brings me closer to something. Therefore, it is very important what these actions will be. I would like to give really feedback, and not just "Good post".

Spam and nonsense-comments aren't something that we are looking for, and I will obviously not reward anyone doing that. We want real engagement. It can be difficult to write a meaningful comment sometimes, but it's often easier to respond to others within the comment sections.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
I've seen a lot of good push for engagement and calls to action. With that there's been our spammers yes but they simply don't get an upvote lol. If I see they took the time to read and understand my article and spend the time to leave a valuable comment I believe that is worth a bit of a reward as it takes time to do so. I also hope they found something educational or fulfilling from the article. I don't want people to just comment to comment I want it to be subject matter, to throw out their own opinions even if they don't agree with mine. It sparks intelligence, new ideas and overall even more engagement by doing so. Keep up the good fight it's well worth it. Also those that now have LEO I would expect to use the platform and even start posting on it themselves. A win win in my book.
You have a good point, something I feel is important indeed. I don't think anyone trying to push the engagement is aiming for just raw numbers but I do see a lot of generic spam-ish comments, probably as a result of that or just people hunting low effort votes here and there.
I get that people will not join in and engage on a dead platform but I doubt they want to read through endless nonsense to find interesting content and conversations either. Aiming for a middle ground of activity and sensible content might be a better approach..
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
That's a very good point and obviously something I have thought about. I ignore spammers for instance. They won't be eligible for any type of prizes from any of my contests.
I don't think spammers have the energy to spam when they realize that no one rewards low-quality or no-effort-nonsense either, so it doesn't take long before they stop.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
I hope you're right and the curation system filters out the spammers or makes it so that the effort increases. I also assume the worse spammers won't stick around very long since they'll get bored or don't see much increase in their earnings. As with many things here, time will tell :-)
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
We obviously don't want- or need the spam-type. We want meaningful and well-thought comments, but I have no problem with rewarding people something extra for their efforts. I don't mind the "less good" comments to start with. It's just an attempt of taking the engagement to new heights. When we're there, things will be completely different around here.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Everything will be fine in the end :)
OK, joking aside, without the engagement it will be later than sooner. So, you are right and you are doing the right thing.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
I'm starting to doubt myself though.. The more time that passes and the more I consume content, I'm starting to feel that it's a waste of tokens to do this. I mean, I don't mind doing it, but it feels like most people are active because they want to be active and a chance to get a few tokens here and there aren't likely to change that.
It might encourage new users to engage more though, which is a good thing.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Good morning. It's a valid dilemma. And that's actually good, isn't it?
Maybe these tokens should be a sort of reward for something completed or well done. I don't know, I am just making it up.
Anyway, these are your tokens and it's your decision what to do with them.
Have a great day.

All the Engagement in the world is not gonna fix the fact that LEO has a Billion MAX supply hanging over it's head until the end of time. Too bad it did not simply have 21 Million Like POB. This is why the technicals show LEO in a big bad downtrend. No wonder why u Gotta give them away like they are worthless, because they might just be in the future. Haha just kidding, but not kidding about the bearish KEO technicals. U know I just like to tear posts apart with arguments, but there is always some truth to what I'm saying. Time to damp that Leo and Swap it for POB!
1 Billion LEO MAX Supply!
VS. 21 Million POB Max Supply!
This is a no brainer!
Nice to see you engaging though, so here is a !PIZZA for you! See I can engage too!
P.S. I see a big error in the very first part of your post that you need to pay attention to.
... and I know there are people out there who doesn't believe in this approach,...
should be..
and I know there are people out there who don't believe in this approach,
people don't, because people doesn't, doesn't fly! FYI - just simple basic grammar lesson for you.
I do not see what is wrong with the 1 billion max supply.
Fiat money has unlimited supply. If the governments run out of it, then they just print out another series of it.
If the big amount of the max supply is a problem, then fiat currencies should be worthless, because they are unlimited.
There is absolutely no max supply in the case of the fiat currencies.
Oh yeah, I'm not saying there is a problem with it necessarily, however in comparison to a currency with less in a similar market dynamic, i.e. a community token here beneath HIVE, the one with less total float will surpass the one with more. You are right, XRP has 20 Billion, DOGE has 1 Trillion, ETH is Unlimited like HIVE. Bitcoin has 21 Million, you can kind of see the difference. I like LEO enough to own and HODl over 5000 of them. I'm not gonna even sell them unless all you manipulate the price up again, way up. I do think LEO will go up after this tiny dry spell. I like to fud on LEO because they muted me out of their precious community. I bought the LEO because I like to watch it drop. Twisted yeah I am! I hope it comes back, but from the looks of this bear Leo trend, the next measured move is actually 25 cents! I'm not happy about that at all, does not mean I won't report he truth about it. I'm a LEO holder, so I am the best source, an unbiased source to report these sorts of things. If anything changes, and LEO breaks out of this malaise, then I'll be first to report it!
See I got LEO and they don't even let me use it. To me this is a very bad community'!

Very well said and a great positive way to pay it forward, who cares what others think if they havent got something constructive or helpful to say then maybe they should find something, instead of passing judgement in a sometimes hippocritical way without doing anything themselves. Leo could do a hell of a lot worse than have patrons like you promoting meaningful engagement and that is something we will all surely benefit from.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Thank you very much, I appreciate it. I'm just trying to do the little things I can. Not sure it's the right move, or the best idea, but it's something for starters.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Only time will tell, but it is certainly a positive step forward and could certainly encourage more to follow suit and further discussion, I find a bit of banter always helps, but it has to be meaningful engagement that shows that somebody is interested in what you are saying enough to pay attention and respond accordingly, I hope to follow a similar path as I become more established and raise my engagement, it's motivating to see this kind of stuff happening amongst crypto enthusiasts, I salute you for doing so
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
That's awesome. It's motivating to encourage and motivate others, so it's a win/win for everyone. :)
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
It's a very good point about engagement as i often find more to reply to in the comments than in the actual article. Articles are all well and good but it's the comments section where all the other voices join in and create interesting thoughts and thought provoking questions.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
So very true. It's a shame more people doesn't seem to understand it.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
I am still new to this platform, hence I don't understand a lot of things how rewards and voting power works. Additionally I have never been an active social media user (just consumer, or neither).
What changed my attitude is the blockchain, and I am not talking about the earning potential (but I like that too). I want to promote cryptocurrencies as a whole, because they will change the world as we know it. If youo look around you will see it already did.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Sounds like you're in the right place! :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Things happens. Life happens. That is totally okay. I'm glad to here that you're trying to engage as much as possible though. That's exactly what we need. :)
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
I think that it is somewhat sad to pay for engagement, because the engagement should come naturally.
But I currently do not know any way to increase the numbers.
I would also be interested in a better way.
Probably a proper marketing for the Hive blockchain would help. A proper marketing, which highlights the real values of this blockchain.
Steemit made a huge mistake by advertising itself with the money earning opportunity. That mostly attracted the selfish and greedy people. This is why the real, human comments are rare both on the Steem blockchain and on the Hive blockchain.
What would be your suggestion for the marketing approach? I don't think providing incentive is sad, but I do agree engagement should (at least eventually) come natural. Obviously people are fully willing to engage freely without any reward as mainstream social media have shown. Hell, they'll even endure crazy amounts of shitty promo messages.
Now I'm kind of glad this isn't some facebook or insta 2.0, in general the actual content here is much more interesting. When I think about the marketing I'm not sure if Hive is ready for a full blown campaign yet, or rather if the rest of the world is ready for it. It's a certain kind of people that currently comes on here and actually stays. I've seen many posts about people referring friends/family where all of them quit again sooner or later. Maybe what we need to do is look at the type of people that would currently be interested in the platform in the state it's at right now. Identify the audience and then target it as such?
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
One of the biggest fails we've seen so far, in the history of this blockchain is the "come here and earn a shit ton of money" type of advertising, even though this is still somewhat how I personally think we should market Hive.
I don't want to fool people and I don't want people to come here with high expectations of earning thousands of dollars, but I do want people to understand that we have a superb opportunity here to monetize our content, which the majority of the people never have had the chance to do.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Yeah it's amazing how people from certain countries where wages are very low can actually build something here.
It's probably the vultures flying in for a quick buck at first with this type of advertising, while we need the patient ones who want to put in some work on a consistent basis. People who understand how compounding works so they see the potential of things and don't quit if they only made a few bucks after a month.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Hive and it's communities are actually likely to change the lives of some of those people, so it's a shame that more people don't know that we exist.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
The freedom of speech (no censorship) and content preserving are the two biggest values of this blockchain in my opinion. Once you publish something on the blockchain, it will remain there unchanged as long as the blockchain exists. Even if you edit your post, the original will still be there on the blockchain.
Many people on Twitch/YouTube are looking for a censorship-free platform. The Hive blockchain can give them one.
Games on the blockchain like Steem Monsters/Splinterlands can also attract new users.
Good point, there's definitely many people fed up with the extreme censorship on some platforms.
I think Splinterlands plays a huge role in it, also how I ended up here..
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
It is sad in the sense that it has to be done. We shouldn't have to give away money or have prizes for the most engaging people on a social platform, but the reality is different on this blockchain. That's why I want to do something about it and if my LEO tokens can boost the overall engagement somewhat, I'm all for it.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Giving money away usually causes good reactions. I do not believe in karma myself, but in justice and mercy I do believe.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
That's the whole point. :)
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
I have set myself a mark of making 20 comments per day, it is not easy because it is a lot to read but it is totally worth it, besides that I motivate other users with my example that if you can manage to grow this community in this way, plus a community that has absolute commitment is a successful community.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
20 comments per day is an awesome goal. I managed to make an average of 27 comments per day last week according to the most recent Leo.stats report. I think it's a great achievement but I'm not entirely satisfied yet. I would love to break the 300 mark per week.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
I strive to comment every day ( with few exception because life does happen from time to time) and I think I write more than 10 comments everyday, I don't count them, just to try to engage with the people I follow and have fun. And it has been pretty rewarding so far to be honest.

Imagine having 100 users making 5 comments per day. That's defintiely easier than having 10 users making 50 comments per day.. We need more engagement, which is more comments, but the truth is that we need more people who are putting in effort to increase the overall engagement.
