I'm not 100% certain, but I think how it works is that if you simply upvote and engage with content that you're interested in, it will adapt to your preferences over time.
So when I don't want my feed to be stuffed with YT music videos, I shouldn't upvote people who share them? That's sad - I'd prefer simply having some tags I find irrelevant muted.
Not sure if that's exactly how it works, but maybe. Perhaps others can shed more light on it. The ability to mute certain tags in the personal feed would be nice regardless
It shows you more of what you interact with
I would recommend trying some Lists out - creating your own, etc. as well
You can also refresh the for you feed and have it randomly resort
