Reds, golds, oranges, yellows, and browns, all of the shades of the season abound!
Okay, I didn't intentionally start out to rhyme, but it kind of happened, so, um, yep, cool!!
Anyway, as I walked around the farm doing a few chorin' odds and ends today after finishing up my daily coursework, I was struck by just how fast the colors of the impending season are upon us.
The fall equinox happens this year on September 22nd, this coming Sunday. As much as I love fall, I always get a touch melancholy on that day, as it means an entire quarter of shrinking daylight, and for us up here in the northern latitudes it also means that by Christmas it's only daylight for a few hours a day.
Then again, I do feel a bit like hibernating, so bring on the dark and cozy times!
But back to the colors of the season! My first stop was to cut some calendula flowers. After a bit of a rinse, I popped the flowers into my dehydrator for a bit of a dry so that I can use the petals later this fall to make salve. I love calendula infused into oil for salve making.
I then meandered out to the garden, because I just knew there would be a few tomatoes to pick (there were three nice lovelies!), and then I made a pit stop over at pumpkin station. I didn't grow as many squash this year, but there are a few splendid specimens, like the Kakai pumpkin at the top of this post!
On the way back, tomatoes clutched to my chest (One must defend them against the spicy flies!), I stopped and snapped a picture of the dahlia that's next to my deck. That flower is basically a conglomeration of all the fall colors, I could look at it for quite a spell.
Okay, I did look at it for more than a while, but as I am a touch overloaded in the to-do department I did cut the petal gazing short.
All I know is that my bit of homestead chorin was much more fun than the pile of federal government paperwork I did this morning. Thankfully, that was a brief interlude!
And now, now I am going to go sit on the porch for a bit. I'm struggling some in recovering from the plague that got me a week ago, the fatigue and congestion just won't release me, so I am going to go bathe in the restorative rays of our big ball of fusion.
Tuesdays are just marvelous aren't they?

Just seems too soon!
I agree! As some of the youngin's say, "For real, for real, no cap."

Even though the larches in our yard are not yet in their full yellow splendor, they have been dropping needles like crazy. Another sign of fall!
