Matrix Is Not The Same Without Real Morpheus - Laurence Fishburne

The Matrix Resurrections premiered in theaters on December 22, 2021. It is also available for online streaming on HBO Max, subscription for which will cost $14.99 a month. When new Dune movie premiered it was also available on HBO Max for a short period of time, after which it was removed. It is possible that new Matrix Resurrections will be on HBO Max for only a month.

The Matrix Resurrections wasn't great as the first movie, but it wasn't bad either. It definitely was worth subscribing for HBO Max to watch it. You probably would spend same amount if you went to theaters anyway. With this subscription you can also watch the previous three Matrix movies, and everything else HBO Max offers. Sadly, Dune wasn't available. It may return to HBO max soon though, hopefully.

Another option to watch the Matrix Resurrections is on Hulu. I hear there is a one week free trial available for HBO Max for those who have Hulu. If you already have Hulu subscription and and want to try HBO Max for free for a week and maybe use this opportunity to only watch the movie, this can be a good option. If you are a Matrix fan, I am sure you will find a way to see this forth movie as well.

The biggest surprise and a disappointment for me was not to see Laurence Fishburne who portrayed Morpheus in the previous three Matrix movies. For me personally, Morpheus was the main character of the Matrix, even though more emphasis has been around Neo and maybe even Trinity, or both. Morpheus made the Matrix a success. Laurence Fishburne played the character in the most brilliant fashion. Morpheus was the one knew things, he was the one who understood the Matrix, he was the leader in the fight, he had strong convictions. Neo on the other hand was a confused software engineer. Not surprisingly he is still a confused software engineer in the Matrix Resurrections. lol.

Morpheus is the one who offered a choice, red pill or the blue pill, in a famous scene from the first Matrix movie. While many ideas from Matrix has become a part of discussion even years after the movies, taking the red pill one has become a global cultural phenomenon in this interconnected world. The idea of seeing the true nature of the reality or the world and not falling into traps set to deceive and manipulate by the powers that be. This ideas has founds its place in crypto world as well. Taking the red or orange pill is often attributed to those who finally realize the changes that bitcoin and other cryptos bringing to the world.

The writers, creators, and producers of the Matrix Resurrections do see the value in the particular scene and the idea of the pills depicting as well. They bring this choice in the new Matrix as well. But this is done best by the real Morpheus, Laurence Fishburne himself. So, my question is why Laurence is not in the Matrix Resurrections?

I didn't expect the new Matrix to be better than the original one. It still had a great amount value in creating the fourth movie that reunites original stars like Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne in their iconic roles as Neo, Trinity and Morpheus. Instead they chose to go with only Neo and Trinity. What surprises me the most of this decision is that the character of Morpheus is still in the new Matrix. However, this time Morpheus is portrayed by another actor, Yahya Abdul-Mateen. I have nothing against Yahya and his acting, but this iconic character is performed best by Laurence. Since there was still a need to have Morpheus in the movie, I ask again, why isn't Laurence not there?

One of the explanation might be that this time their focus was the love story between Neo and Trinity, and the character of Morpheus was secondary to the story. However, this love story is not complete without Morpheus who makes it possible. They do realize that and still have to rely on having Morpheus making things happen. But they was Morpheus is written in the story is as if they had no plans to include him in the first place, but had to. Although Laurence Fishburne wasn't in the movie, it was great to see new actors like Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, and Jessica Henwick as new characters of the story. They all did a great job.

It is understandable that actors are also people and they have their lives and various circumstances that may prevent them from performing in sequels. Often writers and producers come up with clever ways of going forward without the actors when they are no longer available to take part in the movies. There are even situations when actors don't agree with the pay they are being offered and decline. Or sometimes they are already committed to other movies or projects, or retired to shift focus to their personal lives and family. None of these seem to be the case with not having Laurence in the Matrix Resurrections.

Usually most credible explanations are from the people involved. In this case, Laurence Fishburne has stated in the interview in 2020 that he will not be in the Matrix Resurrections and he never was asked to be in the movie. Really? I have no reason not to believe this statement. Why would he lie? It is disappointing that he was never approached by the creators or had some discussions. After all, Morpheus character is still in the new movie.

We will probably know more about this in the future. For now it seems to be a mystery why the creators of the movie would not include such a great actor. It would have made the new Matrix so much better. I am disappointed, but don't regret watching it. Still a good movie to watch. Laurence Fishburne will remain to be the real Morpheus, and nobody can take that away from him.

I also heard there were some NFT sales related to the new Matrix movie. Not sure if it was an official thing and movie makers were involved in it or not. But it was interesting to see Keanu Reeves's reaction when he was asked about these NFTs. Watch the 40 second video below yourself. It is funny.

Have you seen the Matrix Resurrections yet? Did you like it? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments.

why isn't Laurence not there?

Because this isn't (the real) Morpheus from the Trilogy. This is a program version of Morpheus created by Neo (Thomas) in a modal of his video game within the Matrix. This program is a combination of the real Morpheus and agent Smith.

The real Morpheus is ded in IV.

So did Trinity and Neo. The real Morpheus didn't die on screen (or even in the game which has since been classified as not canon). He died in some off screen battle outside of the main story line.

I knew you would have the most logical explanation. Did you already watch it? We were just talking about it yesterday. You are fast. :)

I still think they could have used Laurence instead. Combining Morpheus and Smith doesn't makes sense. It didn't really serve any meaningful purpose.

Laurence would be a lot more expensive, I assume the budget for this version was far less considering how it was released and almost cancelled mid-way (see below), they had a good reason plot wise to use someone cheaper, and perhaps there was something else behind the scenes no one wants to talk about publicly.

That said, I agree that using Laurence would have been better as a viewer.

It didn't really serve any meaningful purpose.

One of the characters in the first part of the movie explained the purpose and to me it made sense.

Overall I think they covered all the bases well regarding plot twists and why things were done. Especially with Thomas not wanting to do the 4th iteration of the video game and blaming Warner Bros, which was Wachowski's sentiment on making this movie.

Wachowski tried to end this movie before it even finished (blaming COVID from what I recall), but the cast themselves were able to talk them into completing it.

That said, I agree that using Laurence would have been better as a viewer.

동의. 캐스팅으로 인해 일부 줄거리가 변경 된 것 같습니다. 캐릭터가 캐스팅 된 것과 다릅니다.

From what I heard from Laurence's discussions, he was never even called.

A big eye opener for me was when I read the Wachowski's were not making a sequal, but more of a tribue for the fans. Which explains the fan service and lack of originality in the latest movie.

They could have still used Laurence, and done some magic with makeup. It was wrong not to at least approach him.

Hugo Weaving didn't return because he had time commitments on a play he was in, although he tried to work it out with Lana, but she turned him down.

There has been no public comment from Lana on the reason why Laurence Fishburne didn't return. I know he wanted to do it, and he seemed surprised he wasn't invited back. The new Morpheus is OK, but he's no Laurence Fishburne.

If I had to guess, I'd say it might have been his age, as Joe Pantoliano who played turncoat Cypher, also contacted director Lana Wachowski, offering to be in the new film but never heard back from her.

Since the new Matrix film is set 60 years in the future, I wondered if that is the reason some of the older characters weren't invited back. I honestly think Lana was aiming for a young cast in oder to set the stage for even more Matrix movies, and only brought back the people she had to.

What they could have done if age was an issue, was use Laurence Fishburne's voice in the movie, like Bane in The Dark Night Rises, That was not the voice of actor Tom Hardy you were hearing from! But I agree, his character will be missed.

I don't know why everybody hates on The Matrix Reloaded. I loved it. While nothing can beat the first film, Reloaded had tons of action, and a unique storyline. It was the third film in the series that left me confused, and I rank the new Matrix film above that one.

I have pretty low expectations for the movie. I loved the 1st Matrix and basically thought it was a mind altering idea that really stayed with me since I first watched it. But then I thought the movies went downhill from there. I'm interested to watch the new movie but I'm not expecting much from it. I can't comment on Laurence Fishburne not being in the film but it looks like someone in the comments had an explanation.

I did see Dune though and really liked that. It pretty much followed the books exactly other than some minor inconsequential tweaks.

The first Matrix was like a wow moment in many people's lives. And that soundrack, uh my , it was quite something in those old days. Merry Christmas🤗

Yeah. They were something. There aren't many movies out there that have such a strong effect, especially nowadays.

I have not seen the movie yet so I cannot comment on how it was compared to the original movie. It is disappointing to know that Laurence Fishbourne would not be in it for whatever reason. Maybe a Morpheus Movie is in the works, I don't know. It would be cool if that was the reason why he wasn't there. :)

!PIZZA

That would be cool to have Morpheus movies.

I actually don't like the sentimental decisions of movie creators when picking roles.
I've anticipated this movie for a while now I'm glad it did come out but as you mentioned Fishbourne being replaced is a turn off but Keanu Reeves would still get me down.

Yes, still a good movie to watch.

Well, a lot of feedback about the disappointment, i am still excited to watch it. Overall, it is just great to see another matrix movie. Just sad that it is more john wick instead of neo style.

I would still recommend watching it. It is a good movie.

I probably will just calm down to see it.
The NFT tho kinda makes it more crypto relevant for geekgirl. Didnt know you loved movies, but started suspecting it from your robinhood post.

Thanks for the video too, the concept of NFTs on movies, how will that workout and then I m also asking, will the actors get a cut?

Funny thing is that NFT video lead me to watching the movie.

Ooh.. Hehe.. I see..

You seem disappointed..

I ll see the movie but maybe much later.

I did not watch Matrix Resurrection yet and the only Matrix Movie I watched was the original back when I was a kid. However I have heard a few things online and what people had to say definitely didn't encourage me to go watch it.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Sounds like you didn't like the original one. Otherwise, you probably would have tried to watch the others too regardless what people say online. :)

I did like the original but that was a long time ago. It might be nostalgic but I don't think it's worth subscribing over to HBO MAX or going to the theaters for it. When some of the videos happen to appear on my Youtube feed, I can't help but I can't seem to stop myself from watching it.

Laurence fishbourne not appearing on this matrix part has a huge impact on the viewers. I think alot of people were expecting to see him feature, I'm not excluded. I'm still yet to see it and I can't wait to give my verdict on it.

@geekgirl I'm a huge fan of Lawerence, so it is disappointing that he wasn't even asked to be in the new movie! I haven't seen it yet, but am planning to. You give a very good blog about the movie sparked a lively discussion about it as well.

I have seen Dune and it was well worth the trip to the theatre. Dune is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi books and the movie was not a disappointment like sometimes happens with beloved books. However, I didn't realize that it was only PART 1 - though I did wonder how they could possibly tell the whole story in only one movie. So looking forward to the sequels as well.

I felt like the first 20 minutes, with people discussing marketing and blaming Warner Bros, was nothing but them complaining about being forced to make another one.

I caught a glance of the movie when I went to a phone store. It looked very intriguing but I was lost because I didn't start from the beginning.

It's definitely a must watch.

I loved the original Matrix and yeah, the new Morpheus is not really convincing me as well.

Anyway, we are living a real-life Matrix since a couple of years with a lot of different characters impersonating the "bad guy" and with people rebelling to the Matrix that are constantly decreasing in number. I guess that no best time could be chosen to release the new Matrix, hoping more and more people will open their eyes

In my humble opinion it was all just a huge waste of time & money :D

No new plot... nothing interesting... nothing new....

Why did they even bother to make this movie?

In fact, I always like the first and second movie in a sequel, because I expect much from the sequels and sometimes they let me down.

there was a real Glitch in The Matrix !

Neo on the other hand was a confused software engineer. Not surprisingly he is still a confused software engineer in the Matrix Resurrections. lol.

Hahahaha this was funny. But maybe add sexy. Sexy confused software engineer. The sexy almost cancels the confused🤣🤣🤣Who cares he's confused, he's hot🤣🤣

I did not see the movie but I consider Keanu's reaction towards NFT's to be hilarious. They should get a cut.

Merry Christmas🤗

Just watched this movie yesterday. Yes, I agree with you that no one can replace the original Morpheus. I share your disappointment, but just like you, I also enjoy the movie. Just wondering do I really need to fly before the eyes of my friends for them to take that red pill? I am not Neo! ^_^

Morpheus is already dead in the story (Matrix Game) . The one on the movie is just his program version.

This move was very bad .... I not like this story . 😑😑😑😒😒😒😒 old ones are the best .

I really attempted my best to like it but it for sure fell flat compared to the old originals. The story has me wondering what will happen next but not enough for a $50+ trip to the movie theater. Will most likely watch the next if there is one but not all that excited for it. This seems to be a recurring theme the story creation out of Hollywood is just awful anymore.

This one looks good so far. Need to watch soon.

Always been a fan of the matrix series

The craze for matrix is not in India , currently we have for bollywood movie 83 which revolve around cricket....what you expect from a cricket loving nation😉

BTW....just to heads on, there is a community for movie / cinema / webseries etc. These movies related contents are not for @leofinance . There might be chances of getting muted or banned , this community is very particular about the community related topics.

Thank you for the suggestion. Leofinance.io is my default posting front-end. I have been using Leofinance for a long time and only use this front end in posting. I like it better than other alternatives.

I do try to keep things somewhat relevant to finance and crypto though. Even if the main topic is the movie, I do mention how it is also relevant to bitcoin, crypto, and NFTs.

That said, if somehow I get muted or banned, so be it. That's the beauty of decentralized networks and Hive. We are owners and not users.

That good saying...👍 infact @leofinance has becomes one of the most popular front-end in recent times than any others....I see most in my feed page....

I felt the same way. I loved Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus. He played the role perfectly. It was really hard accepting this new Morpheus.

We've seen The Matrix franchise do this before with The Oracle.

Neil Patrick Harris was a pleasant surprise. He did justice to Smith's character IMHO. Like The Oracle, Smith could really become anyone.

I also like how they built on the parallels of Neo and Agent Smith. That was interesting indeed.

I didn't like the way they introduced the new Morpheus either. I won't expand on that because I'd rather not post spoilers just yet. It was a brilliant way to introduce a new actor for the part though. I found it a bit hard to swallow though. Laurence Fishburne Morpheus was one of my favorite characters!

It looks like they left an open ending so I'll be shocked if we don't see some new movies in the future. To me, this almost seemed like the movie that introduces this generation to The Matrix and it's preparing everyone for the real movie to come. I found this first NEW one a little lacking though.

They could really take this into some interesting directions though. I did like the message at the end. Again, no spoilers so I'll just leave it at that!

Great review! Cheers!

Morpheus was the backbone of the old Matrix.

I've watched it and I enjoyed it a lot!

I didn't mind not seeing Laurence Fishbourne, myself, I was okay with the new Morpheus and Okay with the story. I think the producers didn't want to go too much like the first trilogy. They found a way to bring back so many characters and adding the real Morpheus might have just been too much 'bring back'.

Not seen yet, but this post tempts me - HBO Max is still not available to us, and I don't want to go to theater now, given that we are back to containment zones. Will have to wait.

I watched this yesterday in the cinema, it was awesome, really, talk about entertainment to just cool off some stress...

Hi @geekgirl
I saw the movie.
It was a good movie, but some aspects were disappointing, and hard to follow.
The theme of the movie, as in what Agent Smith did to the two characters Neo and Trinity was quite creative and a massive display of poetic irony.
But other aspects of the movie flow were..could have been better.

As for Morpheus, the actor was fine in his role as a code construct?
But he was no Lawrence Fishburne, and that was disappointing.

The Red pill Blue Pill is an iconic cultural moment and it is so appropo for our new world now that it is a unfortunate missed opportunity for the film to capitalize and connect the movie to what is going on in the world today...

But the new actor who played the code construct...
He was so different fro the Morpheus we expected.
And while some of this can be attributed to him not being an actual human.
I imagine some of his quirkiness was the actor trying to act like a computer code construct now sentient..

So perhaps he was doing the best he could to show what such a being would be like...

All in all worth the price of admission for Matrix Fans and an interesting glimpse into what modern technology does with the film scenes and films special effects.

@shortsegments

I don’t have a comment yet until I’ve seen the movie myself it’s bad that Laurence Fishburne won’t feature in it

I will watch the movie. Thank for your review

I really enjoyed reading it here at hive

Yep I've seen it and it looks like a parody movie. Wasn't sure if I should laugh while watching or not. 🙊

I wasn't feeling it when I heard about M4, so I may end up seeing it after I can find it on DVD somewhere.

Regarding Morpheus, isn't it more like in this movie he's Morpheus 2.0? I forget where I read this, but I read that for this movie he's actually a combination of Morpheus and Smith (Agent Smith from M1, or Smith 2.0 from M2 & M3, I don't know). If this is true, then maybe it's better that a different actor play this version of Morpheus.

Nearly all fans of the movies agree that The Matrix is #1. While many fans of M1 weren't too keen on the sequels M2 & M3, I liked them both on their own terms. The Matrix Reloaded focused on activity in the Matrix, while The Matrix Revolutions focused on the real world and Zion.

At least for now, the series for me ends with M3. In the future, who knows?

Cool post - I have yet to see it but I am excited. I expected he'd be in it. Cheers friend.

Not even Fishbourne and weaving coming back would have saved this dumpster fire there was no story to begin with and it didn’t even bring any fresh ideas or rather toyed with some but didn’t bother to explore it at all like the sentient life chosing its own path

lol. I agree. You said it better.
