'The Net' Opening Scene
No money is officially money until you buy pizza with it.
You may have heard the story of how someone bought pizza with 10000 BTC. Some one named Laszlo posts on a Bitcoin forum in May 2010 saying that they would pay 10000 BTC for a couple of pizzas. That story gets repeated a lot when people talk about Bitcoin.
On May 18, 2010 Laszlo says:
I'll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day. I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I'm aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don't have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a 'breakfast platter' at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you're happy!
I like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc.. just standard stuff no weird fish topping or anything like that. I also like regular cheese pizzas which may be cheaper to prepare or otherwise acquire.
If you're interested please let me know and we can work out a deal.
Thanks,
Laszlo
Nobody responded for three days, and Laszlo posted again on May 21, 2010:
So nobody wants to buy me pizza? Is the bitcoin amount I'm offering too low?
Finally, the next day Laszlo reported success:
I just want to report that I successfully traded 10,000 bitcoins for pizza.
And they also shared the photos of the purchased pizza.
The value of 10,000 bitcoins at that time was about $41 USD and Laszlo paid $20.50 USD per pizza. This is an interesting story in Bitcoin's history and will be repeated many many times in the future.
While you may have heard this story, you many not be aware of that first online sale had also to do with pizza. In 1994 Pizza Hut was the first to sell something over the internet. However, just like in Laszlo's case the payment wasn't done online and instead money changed hands with delivery. Only ordering of pizzas was done online.
So, no money is really money until we use it to buy pizza. :)
Time to make Hive Dollars (HBD) real money and spend them to buy some pizza.
I have a budget of 50 HBD, which is currently worth $100 USD in the market, to buy you some pizza.
It may be one Hive Bee or more who ends up with pizza. I don't know. Prices for pizza are different everywhere, and we have a global Hive community.
If you would like me to buy you pizza, just leave a comment with the following information:
- What kind of pizza would you buy?
- Where will you buy it from? (Country and Company if you wish to share)
- How much will it cost you in USD?
- Will you commit to actually buy pizza with HBD sent?
- Optional: share photos of the pizza you would be getting.
My favorite pizza is Pagliacci's Pear Primo which they don't serve anymore. It is a pizza with pear and walnut toppings.
Obviously 50 HBD or $100 USD is not enough to buy pizzas for everybody. I decided to start choosing from the cheapest prices and keep going up until the budget runs out. It is up to you if you want to buy a slice of pizza or family size or party size. It is up to you what kind of pizza and from where you buy. I would request one thing, when you end up buying pizza please come back and share photos if you can.
This pizza contest will end in 3 days and I sent out HBD to a winner or winners.
You don't need to wait to make Hive Dollars pizza certified. Feel free to spend your HBD for buying pizza and make a post about it. Make sure to let me know, so I can 100% upvote this effort. Or even better, buy other Hive Bees some pizza. :)
Please reblog this post so more people can see and participate.

Will you commit to actually buy pizza with HBD sent?

Optional: share photos of the pizza you would be getting.
I will definitely share photos in a review post once I get it!

Awesome. Thank you for participating.
thanks for hosting! it's a really cool idea
The BTC Pizza story is the best origin story of any currency. What else but pizza?
I'm a simple guy, I'd like to buy a pepperoni pizza, maybe with some onions. About $10 would cover it. To sweeten the deal, I'll order the pizza while I'm live streaming and let my audience know that it's been paid by a member of the Hive community.
The pizza will be ordered from a local business, I'd rather not say which one :-)
Lastly, if I get selected here, I'll make a post on my Hive blog sharing the photo and letting everybody know how it went.
GL to all the hungry commenters in this thread :-)
Live stream order sounds great. lol. Thank you.
A pizza where I live costs the equivalent of $9.50 USD and that's if you use a credit card. In cash it's $7.
You see, there are two prices for pesos/dollars. You have the corporate and government rate which allows them to buy dollars at the rate of 1 USD:98 ARS. For the rest of us, dollars are more 'expensive' at 1 USD:140 ARS. Of course when you have dollars in cash you're better off than using credit cards or bank transfers. So in that case on the other end of the spread is is 1USD:135 ARS. There is always a spread.
So, it's $7, but that's USD. Now $3,20 HBD. You can buy a lot of pizzas here for 50 HBD. Sorry, no photos of pizzas. I haven't shot any pizzas in years and the ones I have shot are stored in backups right now.
I plan on taking a picture when I buy the pizza.
Perfect. Thank you for participating.
That laszlo guy was ahead of his times. Hopefully they took their idea of food delivery and created uber eats or something lol
lol. They probably kept thousands more of bitcoins. Who needs a company when bitcoin can do all the work.
Are you going to order some pizza?
I’m buying pizza 🍕 with $HBD

Thank You Nathan!
Indi Chicken Tikka Large from Dominos, Bhubaneswar, India - Costs around 834 INR + taxes, a little expensive to be around 15 USD though : https://pizzaonline.dominos.co.in/menu?customise=4439
Select the large, by default it chooses the medium 😀
This pizza looks good. I heard our local dominos running 50% discount. I may need to order some tomorrow.

If they give 50% discount on pizzas here, then people will stand in long queues 😀 and they will run out of stock.
lol
Sounds really good
Yeah I remember the BTC pizza story... reminds me of my own one - selling 50 btc for $5 each.. back in 2012 ;)
That is very nice. These pizzas look delicious.

Ok lets see if I can get the Pizza, its been quite some time I have eaten it. Not because I don't like it but just getting over weight day by day.
I am Vegetarian so will be buying a Veg Pizza (Veg Extravaganza with Black olives, capsicum, onion, grilled mushroom, corn, tomato, jalapeno & extra cheese) from Dominos. I am staying alone as of now so Regular Fresh Pan Pizza with extra cheese and will cost Rs 315 or $4.5.
I will buy the pizza from the HBD sent.
I love Veg Pizza. I think I know what I will order for myself too now. :)

LOL this sounds like a fun challenge, let me see if I can participate let’s see if HIVE can pass the pizza test
That is a lot of pizza :)
Participate! Who doesn't like pizza?!

This is a fun idea. I would take part but I can't commit to buying the actual pizza. I live in a small town in France and the only pizza here is sold out of a food truck that comes and goes. I never actually know when it will be in town. Great thought though. I'll have to pop back over to see the pizza photos when people start buying them
I will need to make one for "buying dinner or lunch" in general next time.

I always remember that BTC pizza story to help me feel better about the 50 btc that I solo mined at the beginning. I didn't really get it back then but I though the idea of digital money was cool.
Long story short, I started seeing news about people using btc to hire hit men and sell drugs and such. Then I heard they were arresting people for having it. I freaked out and formatted the hard drive. I didn't even have a backup of the private key, because I didn't even know what that was I just followed the instructions step by step and set up a node.
I ran it until I found a block, then turned it off because I couldn't play Crysis. Such simpler times.
wow, that is an amazing story. No more formatting hard drive from now on. I sometimes forget where I put the passwords/keys for some random wallets I have/had. Not for btc but other random coins. I need to get them organized.

Someone watching the new MIT Blockchain course?
It is not new. It is from 2018.
I wrote about it last month here:
https://leofinance.io/@geekgirl/gary-genler-professor-who-taught-blockchain-and-money-at-mit-is-going-to-become-sec-chairman
Is there a new one?
Would you like some pizza?

I thought it was fairly new but that’s the one I was thinking off.
Don't spend it on me but cool idea.
I saw this post and it reminded me of this tweet and video.

I am not sure anyone here loves pizza like I do.
So yeah no money is really money until we use it to buy pizza😜
Firstly I can go for any kind because I eat all, usually what I can afford at that time.
I prefer pizza from my favorite hangout "Big kitchen"
The main pack goes for $9,there is also a smaller one of $7
Finally I will definitely share a photo after the purchase
I vividly remember the pizza Bitcoin story,it went viral especially after the price mooned but then what do we know because here there is a popular saying that "Bitcoin is not for poor people".
Back to the contest
I would be ordering my pizza from De choice and it goes for $11
And yes I am commiting to share the pictures
Thanks for this
Hi, fantastic your proposal to see how to buy a pizza with HBD.
I'm in!
What kind of pizza would you buy?
I would buy a Pizza called 4 cheese spring, which comes with ham, bacon, paprika, corn and four different types of cheese, plus the edge of the pizza is filled with cheese. Very good!
Where will you buy it from? (Country and Company if you wish to share)
I would buy it from a pizzeria called Rika's Pizza, here in Cumaná, in Venezuela, where I currently live. I would go with my two daughters.
How much will it cost you in USD?
The large pizza (family) costs 11 dollars and comes with a soft drink.
Will you commit to actually buy pizza with HBD sent?
Of course I will
Optional: share photos of the pizza you would be getting.
Yes, I could make a Post of that day.
Thank you @edmarr. Unfortunately, this contest ended a couple of days ago and HBDs for pizzas were paid out already. You can check the follow up post.
Wow this is so thoughtful of you @geekgirl,you have such a kind heart,I would be buying Domino's pizza from my country Nigeria and it goes for $6.I can't wait to share photos of mine, thanks so much
How nice it would be if could eat a pizza together out side the Covid quarantina
Yes! Hopefully soon.
i wanted to take you on this but i wanted to spend hbd on that pizza. converting 6-8 hbd to local currency is not an option because i will probably spend more then the pizza cost. so i started looking are there places that would take crypto. i managed to find only one place (brewery). So now i started thinking how are they doing it.
I think i will go on a trip when bars are opened, to try to find out what are the requirements for a bar to accept crypto.
Maybe we could have a place accepting HBD :)
There a two options.
You can include all fees including costs of converting hbd to fiat as the total price of the pizzas.
Or you don’t even need to convert. You can buy with your fiat and keep the hbd. Eventually you will probably convert them to fiat anyway.
It will be interesting to know how businesses that accept crypto operate.
Thank You!
i really want to know how they do it here, because if it is possible i will for sure make my friends to accept Hive and HBD :D not that a lot of people would pay with it, but it would be cool :)
Unfortunately, I'd have to go the DIY route and buy ingredients to make my own. Coincidentally, I just made four dairy-free calzones to freeze for baking later.
That sounds great. Please let me know the total cost for ingredients to make the pizza/calzones. Thank you for participating.
Hard to estimate. Perhaps $10 total for the cheese substitutes I blended, $4 for the turkey pepperoni, $2 for the tomato sauce, and negligible additional costs for vegetables, oil, flour and yeast.
One of the calzones tore when I transferred it to the freezer, so I'll add a picture shortly, since I think I'll just eat it for a midnight snack now.
EDIT:
Before and after. The gaping wound in the crust didn't actually make a mess, and the toaster oven worked well to bake the thing.
I already have pizza, so no need to send any funds!
No idea if the you sold out of pizza, but:
1 slice of pepperoni from Abe's Pizza in Berkeley, CA USA = $4.57
Yes, prices out here can be insane, but it's a big slice of great pizza 🤗
Awesome. Thank you for participating.
Very nice story !
Inspiring !
Thank You.
