You do need shields off to see the banner ads.
But I think you should still be able to see that the thread is earning ad revenue because others are viewing it.

views are views, my display just doesn't tabulate it on my side, but my interaction still earns you something.
If you create a thread and someone else views the ads on it, yes.
But with ad blockers up, you're not generating any ad revenue and thus aren't helping me.
