We exist in an era of extraordinary connectivity. With a simple punch on a display screen, communication can be established across the world, access huge volumes of data, and submerge ourselves in digital spaces. Hitherto, notwithstanding this high-level connectivity, a lot of us are more isolated and disconnected than we can imagine. This is the contradiction of technology: it connects us somehow and isolates us in other ways.

Ponder on it: we can communicate with most of our friends and families via social media, nevertheless, few of those connections are sincere and meaningful. We can devote countless time scrolling over selected online personas of info, but do we really devote time to building authentic one-on-one communication?

The advent of technology has certainly transformed communication. It has aided communication between family members isolated by distance to keep tabs on each other, eased worldwide relationships, and provided a base for marginalized individuals to be listened to. Technology has always brought succor during crises or disasters, interconnecting people and societies needing help with necessary resources for survival.

Nevertheless, technology also creates barriers and disconnections. The endless barrage of notifications can cause severe distractions from genuine communication that would have fostered bonding between friends and families. We have been too far from the real world where genuine emotion is expressed and experiences are shared by becoming more glued to our digital screens.

The invention of social media is also a contributing factor to a culture that entrenches comparison, competition, self-doubt, and depression. Our social media space is continually swamped with idealized imageries of how others’ lives are, making one feel inadequate and anxious. The burden of having a perfect online outlook can stop us from becoming true and susceptible, impeding proper connections.

Moreover, the growing dependence on digital technologies for communication can wear down our communal skills. We develop fewer skills at interpreting nonverbal signals, understanding gestures and body language, and communicating meaningfully. The comfort of interacting via text messages and emojis can result in misinterpretations and misapprehensions, further widening the communication gap with one another.

But then again, we cannot wallow in pessimism. Technology, like all tools, can be utilized for both good and bad. The burden now lies on our individual choices. The potential of the technology can be harnessed to bolster long-standing affinities, institute new interconnections, and aid commonality.

We must exercise caution when navigating the digital path by prioritizing real-life communications, imposing limits on technology usage, limiting social media time, not believing everything we see online, and ensuring genuine connections with technology.

Technology has come to stay. We must find a balance in its usage to aid our social and family lives. Let’s be careful of the inherent pitfall of technology and ensure that we use it consciously to foster healthy relationships instead of disconnection and isolation.
