Crypto Fame: United We Stan

in LeoFinance3 years ago

Fame is pretty weird.

There's an excellent description of it in the last book I read.
I remember had trouble finding it back then.
Let's see if I can find it this time around...

x minutes later

So let’s talk a little about April May’s theory of tiered fame.
Tier 1: Popularity

You are a big deal in your high school or neighborhood. You have a peculiar vehicle that people around town recognize, you are a pastor at a medium-to-large church, you were once the star of the high school football team.

Tier 2: Notoriety

You are recognized and/or well-known within certain circles. Maybe you’re a preeminent lepidopterist whom all the other lepidopterists idolize. Or you could be the mayor or meteorologist in a medium-sized city. You might be one of the 1.1 million living people who has a Wikipedia page.

Tier 3: Working-Class Fame

A lot of people know who you are and they are distributed around the world. There’s a good chance that a stranger will approach you to say hi at the grocery store. You are a professional sports player, musician, author, actor, television host, or internet personality. You might still have to hustle to make a living, but your fame is your job. You’ll probably trend on Twitter if you die.

Tier 4: True Fame

You get recognized by fans enough that it is a legitimate burden. People take pictures of you without your permission, and no one would scoff if you called yourself a celebrity. When you start dating someone, you wouldn’t be surprised to read about it in magazines. You are a performer, politician, host, or actor whom the majority of people in your country would recognize. Your humanity is so degraded that people are legitimately surprised when they find out that you’re “just like them” because, sometimes, you buy food. You never have to worry about money again, but you do need a gate with an intercom on your driveway.

Tier 5: Divinity

You are known by every person in your world, and you are such a big deal that they no longer consider you a person. Your story is much larger than can be contained within any human lifetime, and your memory will continue long after your earthly form wastes away. You are a founding father of a nation, a creator of a religion, an emperor, or an idea. You are not currently alive.”

― Hank Green, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing

Most people lead small & boring lives...

And then they live vicariously through their favorite celebrities and entertainment distractions. It blew my mind how popular reality television got back in the day. Give the people what they want, I guess.

Everyone wants to be a super hero.

Everyone wants to be rich.
Everyone wants to be important.
Everyone wants to be more than they are.

Deep down we want to be immortal gods.

This deep-seeded urge extends back thousands of years.
It's heavily implied in all the myth & legend humanity has to offer.
People have infinite want, and with that want comes infinite greed.
And that's where we get into trouble.

pyramid.jpg

And then some of us got it in our minds that power and importance are all relative. So if we are more powerful and important than the people around us that makes us godlike... relatively speaking. When in truth all of humanity has become enslaved by its own greed and complete inability to scale as our institutions implode from the weight of their own corruption.

But I digress

The real question I want to pose here is: what about crypto?
How does cryptocurrency measure up to the competition?

Who are the top players in crypto?
  • Michael Saylor?
  • Elon Musk?
  • Michael Novogratz?
  • Tyler & Cameron Winklevoss?
  • Brian Armstrong?
  • Chris Larsen?
  • Changpeng Zhao?
  • Justin Sun? (lol)
  • Craig Wright? (lol again)
  • Vitalik Buterin?
  • Dan Larimer?
Take a good long look at that list of famous crypto peeps.

Because that list is hammered dogshit.

Look at the tenants of crypto:

  • Abundance for everyone.
  • Decentralization of power.
  • Equality & Equity
  • Community reclaiming the means of production.
  • Disruption of the legacy system.
  • Wealth building.
So then who on this list actually practices these principals?

None of them?
Maybe Vitalik and/or Dan Larimer? (big maybe)
Other than that... everyone is simply focused on making more money.
It's no different than the system it seeks to replace.

They are all garbage except Satoshi.

The irony of it all; an anonymous entity is the one who created all of this and allowed it to happen. Someone out there did something that got them laughed out of the room on multiple occasions. They did something that is worth a dozen Nobel Prizes, and what do they do? Just disappear and don't take credit for it. Amazing. Truly. Non-human even. That's something you might expect from aliens or Jesus; not from an actual person from Earth.

The people being idolized in crypto are greed-monsters.

The money is celebrated above all else.
We all know it's not supposed to be about the money.
But it just is anyway.
That's simply how the economy and scarcity mindset work.
It will take quite some time and a violent culture shock to change that.

Conclusion

Crypto has a long long way to go in order to get where it needs to be. There's no way to get there from here without an ugly awkward transition phase. Looking at the state of the world today, that transition has already started, but it won't be fully obvious until things get a lot worse than they are today. The price of gas is the least of our concerns.

Looking at what crypto stands for and the leaders being celebrated today, there is an obvious and embarrassing disconnect. We can either view this as a failure... or an opportunity to rise up and replace these false idols with ideals and right-action that actually make sense within the original context of crypto's birth.

I'm here thinking that Elon buying Twitter and turning it into a private company could be good for Hive. Twitter could now not be more centralized and could possibly go the way of Gab, Gettr, Truth Social, etc... so which decentralized blockchain might be there to pick up the pieces?

I dont think it will do much to help Twitter in the overall scope of things. It is more just a situation where Musk could make a few changes but the entire model isnt going to be altered.

Does adding an edit feature really change much?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

To be fair... none of us actually have any idea of what Elon will do with Twitter.... maybe he'll only do some small things.... maybe he'll completely change it. Things could change dramatically overnight based on whatever Elon is interested in, who knows? It's a private company now, it's only beholden to Elon and his investors.

I can't imagine that Elon would spend $44B just to add in an Edit button... there's got to be more to the story than that...

I agree with you. I have a feeling he has plans and we have no idea what they are.

That said, I think there are limitations which he can operate since the investors, whomever they are, will want to get paid. So I dont see things radically changing in terms of the business model.

But with Musk, you know there will be fireworks no matter what. He can now tweet freely without fear of being banned.

Is that worth $44 billion?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Hahaha, no, not at all. I'm sure he would have been granted that insurance with his initial 9.1% of shares.... or probably considerably less honestly.

He might have had it before. Hell he might have had more followers than Trump so banning Elon might have upset more people.

So Elon Musk paid $44 billion USD just/only to add an edit button on Twitter? I highly doubt that. $44 billion USD is a lot of money just/only for an edit button. Even for Elon Musk. There has to be something else. Something else that the users maybe not even see and will not even see. Or maybe will see.

What if he moves Twitter to the DOGE blockchain and monetizes with crypto rewards?

I don't think I fit into any of those categories. Probably like a lot of people. I might have a small bit of local notoriety, but that is about it. Who knows, I guess it doesn't really matter at the end of the day.

You would eat it up. I see you as being a total ham given the chance.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Maybe given the chance and a little bit of bourbon. I'm honestly pretty awkward in social situations.

Did i get into crypto for the fame and money, no i got into it because i like the way that technology is developing with the world and how this method of cash could change the way we see value forever, Any riches i make is to secure my children future only.

The way things are going, the future for your children looks very good.

This really spoke to me. Like how you metaphorically got precisely that point across. I imagine how if you were a time traveler and knew something, you might get frustrated if you got back in time and no one understood what you were talking about. The ones that do share your vision, might also have the ability to see beyond. In the midst of pop culture hype, it's fascinating to see how little the majority understands how direct attention will change the landscape for true creators. Before this really plays out, we might see majority stake holders bring FIAT wealth in. After they delegate to curators, and the space grows this might change. I put a lot of esteem in the fact that this metier holds a lot of individuals with idealism and values when it comes to community, equity and equality. Specially when we talk about art, curation and dPoS.

Edicted is very good at that. He also drives his point home.

I am not even sure I consider Elon "in crypto". Sure he tweets about it and accepted/unaccepted Bitcoin as payment. But he kind of plays around with it. I dont see him on the same level as the others.

Crypto is a something to talk about in between meeting about rockets and EVs.

As for the premise of your article, spot on. We can add the crypto influencers on YouTube. How many of them ever used a Web 3.0ish type application? All of their talk is about blockchain and decentralization, all while basking on centralized systems.

So it is up to us to create the breakthrough.

Have a community become the crypto influencers.

This is a really good comment and totally is the kind of point I try to bring across to anyone I come across promoting their business. Some have intrinsic interest to convey value while others stick to having extrinsic conditioning that prevents them from actually using web 3.0 because they think it isn't where the masses are. To me, my web 2 identity is dead and I believe in the future of ceramic reputation and how this will drive a trustless system of data streams.

I am a weird type who literally wants no part of the fame continuum. If it were up to me I would have less people even know who I am.

What I do want is money (and when I say money -- what I really mean is freedom). Fame only locks you into other people's expectations. To the extent that one can get freedom without money, I'm good with that also. So really the only reason I even care about money is if it can bring me freedom.

I think blockchains, with or without cryptocurrency will go a long way to helping freedom, if we don't cede them to the powerful (I am afraid that is likely to happen actually). That is why I seem drawn to those currencies which resist the powerful (BTC, Privacy coins, RUNE, etc.). Unfortunately I don't think most want those types -- they want power and money. It will probably take a long time to get to the place where crypto actually delivers true freedom if it does.

Rambling...out!

What Satoshi did really is remarkable. Bitcoin's (and generally crypto's) credibility is largely due to his decision to remain anonymous

Crypto has a long long way to go in order to get where it needs to be. There's no way to get there from here without an ugly awkward transition phase.

I just hope that it happens or at least go close to where it needs to be while we are around. It would be amazing to witness such a transformation.

Most of the misery throughout recorded history have been caused by people considered to be messianic saviours by their followers. When such "saviours" are advertised through crypto-related social media, I tend to be sceptical towards their ultimate agenda or ability to reach their stated goals.

Human nature doesn't change. We were built to be competitive, herd animals have pecking orders.

The world wide wealth that is currently available has improved life for most where the idea of what is "poverty" includes those with cable, smart phones and more.

I don't think crypto will break human nature, but hopefully it will break large government control over money, there will always be bad players we have them here as well.

The best case is we get the freedom to chart our own course.

I NEEEEEED to know Satoshi's story!!

Whyyyyy???

Whooo???

How???

If i read this right and understand it all correctly, i would agree to the part you said crypto has a long way to go and it truly isnt just about the money alone.

or an opportunity to rise up and replace these false idols with ideals and right-action that actually make sense within the original context of crypto's birth.

I think i will go with this part too.

Okay, let me check it out.

Limited resources makes hoarders of all stripes and colors. Until we have synthesizers or food replicators it's gonna be Mad Max and Monopolies.

,,Limited resources'' is a myth.

Limited on purpose can still make the shopping isle empty.

Indeed. But unlikely. They need to earn their share.

Every seed I plant gives me 100x in return but still some people want something for nothing.

With the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk, there has been a movement in the doge crypto coin. We do not know how the Hive will be affected by this situation. But we have also received the signal that the markets will improve towards the summer. By the way, the clip and track selection is very nice.

I agree with your characterization of crypto as earning a failing grade. It has not fulfilled any of those goals.
