I’m a little sceptical about AI being a magical solution for small‑time independent film creators. Will it help drive the cost of production down and allow someone to create amazing fictional worlds on their laptop for a fraction of the money? Yes. But, even in the past, before AI and CGI, there were filmmakers able, with talent and ingenuity, to create great films with a ridiculously low amount of money.
The most celebrated example in recent decades was Robert Rodriguez, who famously made his debut El Mariachi with a mere $7,000 and later even published a book about it. Yet, at the end of the day, nobody would have heard of Rodriguez if he hadn’t had the good fortune of his film catching the attention of Columbia Pictures executives who later promoted it.
In other words, AI will change Hollywood, perhaps even destroy it and replace it with something different, but instead of big Los Angeles studios you would have big corporate entities controlling the industry via social media algorithms.
