Germanic peoples, although initially recognising nominal rule of Western Roman emperors, begin to carve their own kingdoms on newly conquered or settled territories. Crossing of the Rhine is considered pivotal moment of the Migration period, marking the beginning of the fall of Western Roman Empire.
