#historyonleo #onthisday On December 31st 406 Vandals, Suebians and Alans cross the frozen Rhine, the border of Roman Empire, and penetrate deep into northern Gaul (today's France) and continue migration that would, in case of Vandals, reach North Africa. Germanic peoples, although initially recognising nominal rule of Western Roman emperors, begin to carve their own kingdoms on newly conquered or settled territories. Crossing of the Rhine is considered pivotal moment of the Migration period, marking the beginning of the fall of Western Roman Empire.
