2/ Decision comes after the terrible results of his centrist Renaissance party received at European elections, winning barely 15 pct, and less than half than Marine Le Pen's right-wing Eurosceptic bloc National Rally.
I dont understand European politics/government at all.
Never understood the dissolving of the government. Dont even know what it means. I guess I could research it if I wanted. lol
French Constitution of 1958, unlike US Constitution, doesn't have strict separation of powers and the office of President is much more powerful than its US counterpart. Dissolving the national legislature and calling for new elections is one of those powers that Macron has, and Biden doesn't.
3/ Many from the French opposition called Macron to dissolve parliament and set new national election almost immediately after the exit polls, but few expected that Macron would heed such suggestions and so soon.
Macron's Renaissance (former Republic on the March) actually lacks majority in National Assembly following 2022 elections and Gabriel Attal's cabinet runs the country as minority government, being supported by minor centre-right and centre-left parties on ad hoc basis.
Macron, who had won presidential elections in 2017 and 2022, is barred from seeking third mandat in 2027.
4/ Marine Le Pen was the first to comment on new election, saying that she is ready to become new French prime minister if National Rally wins.
