Hunted Web2

The search for power and control has always been on a rampage. Even in the midst of fools, there is one with more drive of leading the pack. The replacement of web1 with later web2 was indeed an awaited advancement. Did we enjoy it? Of course, it brought in lots and lots of opportunities. There was a flexible global interaction that was put on the table. businesses and individuals who saw the early light jumped in and secured their spot. The era of social media even made it more interesting, you just create an account and that's it (as we thought at first)

What we never understood was what was going on in the backend. Who owns the platforms and controls the data? I could remember my early days where I use to say 'my Facebook account, X or the rest of the likes'. Without doubt those accounts are not mine, it's just me squatting with compliances to their terms and conditions. Am I doing illegal activities to avoid being in terms? Of course not, yet they get to set these terms and even re-amend to fit their needs and I actually amend nothing; 'just comply is my part even if they have to rip my head off'. Many say life is not a fair place as long as humans with opposite intentions are concerned. It was always a game of control from its inception and we knew little to nothing, who even cared by then; it's still surprising many don't still care.

Why am I putting up this article? It's basically because of the recent arrest of Telegram's CEO by the government with regards to the fact that he is opening his network for illegal activities. note the word 'his network'. We have seen the government do such things many times, for example on X and Facebook. Didn't Mark Zuckerberg voice out he had to delete all Covid related rumors (or facts as the case may be) from Facebook as part of government pressure for its compliance? X also has its own share of such a threat. Are we seeing the chain of control here? Only two parties involved; the sites owners and government and the most important people in the chain, 'the users' are completely overlooked.

Web2 provides centralized ownership right? So the owners create the site, users feed in the data, the owners have all right to retain or expose the data (owner-user control) and the government have the right to demand for this data or order for it's elimination (government-owner control) and if you don't comply well ask Pavel Durov, the Telegram's CEO. Data was always a hot cake even in old times yet the challenge was the difficulty and rigidity in getting them. We saw it in ancient times when government would order for census or know the number of people that makes up their army. The case has been resolved by technology, in short, we are freely giving ourselves out.

I guess Telegram was never a TOP notch concerns for the US government seeing to it that the government never demanded to have control over their data at it recent operations. So why now? Firstly, the database has grown and secondly the team sprouting this growth comes from a web government are struggling to control. Boom! So the real reason is simple; 'they have more users or more web3 users' and it is now seen to be conducting illegal activities. Has there always been such assumed illegal activities on the Telegram network? Illegality seems to penetrate everywhere so without doubt we can say a big yes.

I wouldn't outrightly say it's wrong for the government to know it's citizens yet one big fact remains their intention. Is it actually for their betterment or exploitation? As of 11 hours ago, there has been a news release reflecting Durov's compliance to hand over illegal actors on his network. So how will he hand it over? Of course the government will have to take control of the database and scan for who and who they assume are illegal (all user info will be given without users full consent and agreement). Oops! Maybe you did agree, you never even took the time to read their T&C, I never did too. Maybe we are being punished for ignorance.

Nevertheless, from my views, web2 has proven to be a hunted network and this shows unreliability. If the government needs data, they should go fetch it themselves and stop cutting corners. Oh no! I just voiced that out, I should keep my doors locked before the man in the long rain coat comes knocking. Or perhaps, they knock big institutions who have made names; refusing to comply here is a 0.00001% from my views; both are lovers of control. This is where web3 platforms need to step up. When Bitcoin was making the headlines, who did the government arrest? Of course it should be Satoshi Nakamoto, who and where is he? Actually , no one knows. We should learn from here. I am never in support of illegal activities, yet I must say citizens, individuals or users as the case may be have rights of privacy. Illegality did not start now, some English terms are just cover ups to control or oppress another.

To conclude, let me add, web2 will continue to be a hunted environment meaning its users will never enjoy safety. Tech is bringing in a new slangs into the table, 'you control the data, you control the people'. Web2 owners and governments know this, it is only a pity that users don't know or don't care (only a few do). This cause for a need to wake up to our senses that we are exploited every 24hrs in most of this web2 platforms we so much rely on.
