@onealfa posted a puzzle earlier about moving toothpicks to form triangles. Here's one about moving matches to form squares.

Move only two matches, use all matches, and turn 5 equal squares into 4 equal squares. I don't have quite the BOOM! onealfa does, but I'll give a 100% vote to the first one to get it right.

Sort:

Good try. 😀 Move the bottom match from box "5" (the one you don't have numbered) directly to the left. Then take the top match from box 2 and move it down to form the left side of the box. The new box would be holding your smiley-face.

What a nice detail with the sticks :-)...

Move one match from the bottom right square to the bottom left. Move one from the top right to the top left. This makes four equal squares, using all matches

I tried to follow your logic, but the only thing I came up with was having 5 squares again just in a different order so I don't think you got it. Still unsolved though, so you can try again. 🙂

I'll think harder about this it's harder than I actually thought bro

I thought I had it, but there's that condition "use all matches" which makes it tricky. My idea of a solution would have had one dangling matchstick. So my solution is no good.

Keep trying. Still unsolved 13 hours later. 🙂

Take the top horizontal match that is second from left. Place it diagonally within the top left square (like so /).

Take the horizontal match that is directly below the first one that was moved and place it diagonally in the top right square (like so/).

Viola! Four equal squares!

Ha! Good try. You actually moved one of the correct matches. Just not into the right place. Take the first match you chose and place it vertically directly below the match dividing the first two squares on top. Then slide the bottom match in the left square on the bottom directly to the left to complete the square you just started with your first match. See?

I always get so confused with these. 😀

Here's my 2nd attempt:

  • 1st, swing bottom left matchstick from vertical position to horizontal;
  • 2nd, lower 2nd top vertical matchstick to bottom to join the other matchstick which was moved.

All matchsticks are used. All form rectangles

You're sooo close. lol Someone already solved it when I re-posted it, by the way. You're pulling from the correct squares, but you're one off. Take the bottom match from the bottom left square and just slide it over to the left. Then take the top match from the middle top square and fill in the spot down below. Then you'll have four complete squares in an up-down-up-down pattern. See it?
