Flaherty: 'I never want to leave' Los Angeles
The 2024 World Series was a dream come true for Flaherty, who won a championship with the team he rooted for while growing up near Los Angeles. Now a free agent, Flaherty will be able to choose where he wants to continue his career. Maybe it will continue with him staying close to home.
#sports #mlb
"I love this city. I never want to leave," Flaherty said during the Dodgers' championship parade on Friday.
Acquired at the Trade Deadline after posting a 2.95 ERA over 106 2/3 innings with the Tigers, Flaherty pitched to a 3.58 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 55 2/3 frames during the regular season for the Dodgers. His postseason was a roller coaster -- two stellar starts mixed in with three others in which he allowed at least four earned runs -- but the 29-year-old will be one of the most sought-after starters on the open market this winter.
The Dodgers are seen as a good fit for Flaherty. We'll see if he remains with his hometown team.
Flaherty reached free agency for the first time in his career last offseason on the heels of a lackluster walk year that saw him post a 4.99 ERA with a 1.58 WHIP over 144 1/3 innings between the Cardinals and Orioles. He ultimately settled for a one-year, $14 million deal with the Tigers.
One year later, things couldn’t be more different. Flaherty put together an outstanding rebound campaign in 2024, finishing the regular season with a 3.17 ERA and a 5.11 K/BB ratio (194 strikeouts, 38 walks) over 162 innings for the Tigers and Dodgers, who acquired him at the Trade Deadline.
Flaherty went on to earn a World Series ring with Los Angeles, and though he had some hiccups in the playoffs en route to a 7.36 ERA over five starts, he could be poised to cash in on the open market this offseason.
The 29-year-old righty is one of the top arms in this year's free-agent class, with MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand ranking him ninth overall -- fourth among pitchers behind Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell and Max Fried -- on his list of the top free agents.
Snell becomes free agent after opting out of contract
As expected, Snell is a free agent for the second straight offseason. The left-hander exercised the opt-out clause in his two-year, $62 million deal with the Giants on Friday, putting him back on the open market. Last season started off poorly for Snell, who didn't sign with the Giants until mid-March and recorded a 9.51 ERA through his first six starts and made two trips to the injured list.
#sports #mlb
But over the final three months of the season, he looked like the pitcher who won the 2023 National League Cy Young Award with San Diego. Snell pitched to a 1.23 ERA over his last 80 2/3 innings, limited hitters to .382 OPS and racked up 114 strikeouts.
According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, Snell is a top-three free agent in this year's class. The Giants, Padres and Rangers are among the potential fits for Snell, who will turn 32 on Dec. 4. He is hoping to sign earlier this time and believes he has shown enough to avoid languishing on the open market for another offseason.
“I think that was more on teams,” Snell said in late September. “That wasn’t on me. I also think what I was able to accomplish this year will make teams be more aggressive earlier, so I’ll be looking forward to that. We’ll see.”
'The city needed this parade': Dodgers, fans finally get their chance to let loose
After winning their eighth World Series championship on Wednesday against the Yankees, eight buses full of players, families, staff and front office members took to the streets of Downtown L.A. to celebrate the occasion.
#sports #mlb #Dodgers
About 250,000 people filled the streets with another 42,000 packing Dodger Stadium, where the celebration culminated with a pep rally in center field.
“This was the coolest thing I’ve ever been a part of,” said Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, the longest-tenured player on the team. “I’m just so thankful to every single fan that came out. So thankful how well they’ve treated me and my family for all these years. I mean, we’ve been through it, you know, we’ve been through some stuff, so to be able to see them as happy as they were, being able to celebrate with us. It means the world to me. It really does.”
The celebration inside the stadium started at around 8:30 a.m. Once the floats made their way back to Dodger Stadium nearly four hours later, the festivities continued with Ice Cube performing on the field, just as he did before Game 2 of the World Series. Manager Dave Roberts got up on stage and started to dance next to the rapper.
“It’s one thing to celebrate with your coaches, the organization, the players, but I’m telling you, the game is about the players and the fans,” Roberts said. “And in 2020, we just didn’t have that opportunity. Everyone was wearing masks. This right now, it really put a bow on the season where there was some unfinished business in 2020. … The city needed this parade. And we got our parade.”
Players each took turns sending their message to the crowd on stage. For those who weren’t able to celebrate after the 2020 World Series championship, this parade was all the more special.
“2020 FanFest we got asked some really tough questions,” said Dodgers utilityman Kiké Hernández. “I said the 2020 decade is going to be the L.A. Dodger decade and guess what? Who has more championships than us in the 2020s? Absolutely nobody. Absolutely nobody.”
It’s hard to argue that this decade is off to a great start for the Dodgers. That’s in large part thanks to the heroics of Freddie Freeman, who battled a badly sprained right ankle and broken rib cartilage earlier in the postseason, en route to winning the World Series MVP. His historic walk-off grand slam to win Game 1 will go down as one of the best moments in Dodger history.
“From the bottom of my heart,” Freeman told the crowd. “Three months ago, when I came back after my son got sick, you guys showed out for my family and I. That was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had on a field. I did everything I could to be on this field for you guys and I’m glad I did because we have a championship now. I can’t wait to run this back next year.”
Dodgers fans in 'heaven' celebrating with champs
LOS ANGELES -- An estimated quarter-million people donning Dodger blue gathered in downtown L.A. on Friday with two World Series’ worth of celebrating to do.
#sports #mlb
Everyone was abuzz from the Dodgers’ Fall Classic victory over the Yankees, which concluded with a historic comeback win in Game 5 on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. But there was also plenty of pent-up energy from L.A.’s 2020 championship against the Rays, when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the city from celebrating together in proper fashion.
That spurred fans to travel in from all over the Southland for the Dodgers’ first World Series parade since 1988. Before the sun was even up, scores had already assembled for a pre-parade rally at Gloria Molina Grand Park. Others lined the sidewalks and the balcony of City Hall, in front of which double-decker buses carrying the players, coaches, team employees and their families kicked off their 1.2-mile parade route, which culminated with a ticketed event at Dodger Stadium.
The World Series trophy was hoisted. The crowd chanted for World Series MVP Freddie Freeman, as well as for Shohei Ohtani’s dog, Decoy, who rode along. Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass made an appearance to lead a “Let’s go Dodgers” cheer and to encourage all to celebrate peacefully.
"Look at that. It's incredible," Clayton Kershaw said. "I've never gotten to experience anything like this, and it makes everything worth it."
For as much as Friday was about the current team, it was also a chance to commemorate all that came before. Ralph Lopez of Monrovia had memories of watching Sandy Koufax dominate on the mound. Bobby Trahan of Hollywood grew up admiring Dusty Baker. And, of course, countless fans owe their passion for Dodgers baseball to Fernando Valenzuela and Fernandomania.
The festivities included several renditions of “Happy Birthday” in honor of Valenzuela, who would have turned 64 on Friday. The legendary left-hander passed away on Oct. 22, three days before the World Series began.
Elvira Casas and her mother, Margarita Carrillo, of Commerce, remember listening to Valenzuela’s 1981 Opening Day start on the radio, as called by Jaime Jarrín. Friday was the first Dodgers parade for both, as life circumstances upended their plans to attend the one in 1988.
“At the time, we were like, ‘OK, well, next year, because they'll do this again really soon, right?’” said Casas. “And then next year came, and then the year after that, and then there was a decade, and then there was two, and then it was three. And then in 2020, there was no way that we could come. So [my mother] texted me yesterday like, ‘So are we going or what?’ … I immediately called in, and we're here. We're so excited.”
Love for the Dodgers is, quite often, a family affair. But for many, it’s also a way to build community. Stephanie Torres, who attended the parade with two of her friends, pointed to the Dodgers’ heritage nights as a meaningful way that the team brings people together.
“I'm half-Mexican, half-Salvadoran, so I love going to those,” said Torres. “Those sweatshirts we get are always so nice. … We get to see our community and our people get together.”
For Matt Gilson, Amy Pircher and Daniel Brim, the community they formed was more virtual. Even as all three lived outside of Los Angeles, they found each other through a Dodgers fan blog, Dodgers Digest, communing there and on social media for more than a decade before finally getting the opportunity to enjoy a parade together. (The author was previously a contributor to Dodgers Digest.)
Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (back/knee) returns to practice, will play Sunday vs. Broncos
The Charm City can take a collective sigh of relief.
Lamar Jackson returned to practice Friday and said he is good to go for the Baltimore Ravens' Sunday tilt against the Denver Broncos.
#sports #nfl
"Yeah, 100 percent," Jackson told reporters when asked if he'll be ready to play. "That wasn't in doubt. Just resting the body, you know. It's a long season. That's all."
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday that Jackson wasn't practicing simply due to a rest day. However, Jackson was listed on the injury report the same day as a non-participant with back and knee injuries. He was a DNP once more on Thursday, raising concern. On Friday, though, Jackson was back at practice, removed from the injury report and is now set to lead his Baltimore squad onto the field in Week 9.
Jackson is having another stellar season, as the reigning AP NFL Most Valuable Player has thrown for 2,099 yards, 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions, while adding two rushing scores and an NFL-high 501 QB rushing yards.
As noted by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Thursday, Jackson getting rest to deal with nagging ailments might well be a sign of things to come as Harbaugh and the Ravens look to preserve their franchise quarterback.
Harbaugh implied as much Friday, telling reporters he'd consider sitting Jackson during practices down the stretch.
"You want players to be at their best on Sunday," the Ravens coach said.
A situation worth monitoring through the week will likely be worth monitoring in Sunday's game, as well. However, Jackson is good to go as he and the Ravens aim to rebound from a stunning 29-23 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 8.
The Ravens (5-3) kick off against the visiting Broncos (5-3) at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
Packers QB Jordan Love (groin) questionable to play vs. Lions on Sunday
It's a familiar Friday for Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers.
For the fourth Friday this season, Love has drawn a questionable designation as the Packers head into a massive Week 9 showdown against the Detroit Lions with first place in the NFC North at stake.
#sports #nfl
This time around, Love is nursing a groin injury. From Week 2 through 4, he was dealing with a shoulder ailment. If Love's latest injury keeps him from playing on Sunday, he'll be replaced once again by Malik Willis, who filled in for him earlier this season and produced excellent results.
During a 30-27 Week 8 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Love exited with the groin injury. Love returned to practice in a limited capacity on Thursday and on Friday was limited again. He said Wednesday it was "realistic" he could play. That remains to be seen.
Love so far has flexed his stellar arm abilities but been rather mercurial in his play. In six starts, he has thrown for 15 touchdowns and a league-high nine interceptions while averaging 257.8 yards per game.
Willis, acquired by the Packers ahead of the season via trade with the Tennessee Titans, is 2-0 as a starter and has appeared in four games in relief of Love. In those four appearances, Willis has looked more impressive than he had previously in two seasons with the Titans. He's connected on 29 of 39 pass attempts for 380 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, whilst adding 137 yards and a touchdown rushing.
Regardless of Willis' improved play, the Packers would very much prefer to have their franchise QB leading them into their first-place tilt versus the Lions. That's still a possibility as Love is questionable for one more Friday. He played just once previously after receiving the designation this season, however.
The Packers (6-2) host the Lions (6-1) at 4:25 p.m. Sunday.
Jerry Jones admits Cowboys' 3-4 start has been 'a rougher go' than expected, sees opportunity for turnaround
Dak Prescott has become a bit of a turnover machine, throwing eight interceptions in seven games after finishing with nine picks in all of 2023. Offensively, the Cowboys lack punch and consistency, and because their defense is so banged up, they've found themselves fighting uphill battles on a near-weekly basis.
#sports #nfl
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is well aware of their current reality, describing the start as "a rougher go than I anticipated," per ESPN, but remains optimistic as Dallas approaches the midway point of the season.
"It is rougher and I did not anticipate the challenges that we're having with this team," Jones said Friday, "but I am reminded of teams that I've seen that have had a lot of success and put themselves in position to take a shot and they were 3-4."
His team will encounter a quality litmus test this weekend against the 5-3 Falcons, a team that has challenged opposing defenses over the last month, averaging nearly 30 points per game in that stretch. At 3-4, it's also a key point in the season to start a turnaround.
"Hell, I mean to me every game is (a must-win), but obviously, I mean 3-4, as I've said, a lot of season left, but the first start to be able to say that confidently is getting back even, especially, right, having a couple of home ones after that," Prescott said, via ESPN.

#sports #hivebr #futebol
As principais novidades foram a ausência do atacante Endrick, do Real Madrid, e a convocação do zagueiro Murillo, do Nottingham Forest.
Goleiros: Bento (Al-Nassr), Ederson (Manchester City) e Weverton (Palmeiras)
Laterais: Danilo (Juventus), Vanderson (Monaco), Abner (Lyon) e Guilherme Arana (Atlético-MG)
Zagueiros: Eder Militão (Real Madrid), Gabriel Magalhães (Arsenal), Marquinhos (PSG) e Murillo (Nottingham Forest)
Meio-campistas: André (Wolverhampton), Andreas Pereira (Fulham), Bruno Guimarães (Newcastle), Gerson (Flamengo), Lucas Paquetá (West Ham) e Raphinha (Barcelona)
Atacantes: Estêvão (Palmeiras), Igor Jesus (Botafogo), Luiz Henrique (Botafogo), Rodrygo (Real Madrid), Savinho (Manchester City) e Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid)
A partida será no Maracanã.

By the end of this offensive clinic, the Knicks were already up 10 points and snatched the fight out of the sad Pistons, who folded like a 2-7 offsuit poker hand and lost to New York for the 16th straight time in Friday night’s 128-98 wire-to-wire annihilation.
“When we work together,” Tom Thibodeau said, “our offense is going to be really good.”
Yankees pick up Luke Weaver’s 2025 option to lock down key bullpen piece
The Yankees’ first offseason decision was an easy one.
Luke Weaver will be back, with the club picking up a 2025 option worth $2.5 million that will keep a valuable arm who grew into the closer in The Bronx for another season.
Weaver was a journeyman starter when the Yankees claimed him in September 2023.

He pitched well in a small sample and re-signed an incentive-laden major league deal that included a 2025 team option that would prove valuable for the team if Weaver developed well.
Weaver developed well.
He began the season as a flexible, multi-inning arm and excelled, moving his way to the back of the bullpen.
The righty pitched to a 2.89 ERA with 103 strikeouts in 84 innings and locked down four September saves after taking over for Clay Holmes.
Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers celebrate World Series victory with parade and stadium celebration
The Los Angeles Dodgers, including Shohei Ohtani and his dog, celebrated their eighth World Series championship with a downtown parade on Friday.
Seven double-decker buses filled with players, their families and the coaching staff rolled through streets packed on both sides with blue-clad fans. The Los Angeles Police Department estimated the crowd to be 150,000.
A jubilant manager Dave Roberts hoisted the Commissioner’s Trophy.

“This is incredible,” World Series MVP Freddie Freeman said. “LA really showed out today.”
Several players smoked cigars and drank beer on the sun-splashed day.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever been part of,” pitcher Clayton Kershaw said. “I’ve never seen this many people in my life. They’re all Dodger fans.”
A shirtless Kiké Hernández hung over the front of a bus with a beer in his hand. Ohtani held his dog, Decoy, in his arms with his wife, Mamiko, nearby. Walker Buehler, who pitched the ninth inning in the Series finale, did a beer bong while wearing Orel Hershiser’s jersey from the team’s 1988 World Series championship.
“This is crazy, man. I love this,” outfielder Teoscar Hernández said.
Alex Ovechkin scores his 858th goal and has 2 assists as the Capitals beat the Canadiens 6-3
Alex Ovechkin scored his 858th career goal and had two assists, and the Washington Capitals beat the Montreal Canadiens 6-3 on Thursday night to continue their strong start.
Ovechkin is now 37 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record. After making Cayden Primeau the 176th different goaltender he has scored on, Ovechkin is on pace for 45 this season, which would put him at 895 and perhaps beyond this spring.

Before scoring with 7:33 left in the third period, Ovechkin set up goals by Tom Wilson and Aliaksei Protas. Wilson ended an 0-for-22 power-play drought with his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Brandon Duhaime and Jakub Vrana scored less than a minute apart, and new dad Connor McMichael also had a goal for the Capitals, who improved to 7-2-0. They last won seven of their first nine games in 2015-16.
Montreal’s Cole Caufield scored his 10th to tie New Jersey captain Nico Hischier for the league lead. Brendan Gallagher and Nick Suzuki had the other goals for the Canadiens, and Primeau stopped 28 shots.
Canadiens: After coach Martin St-Louis mixed up his lines following an 8-2 home loss to Seattle, this was a better effort. It also helped to get defensemen Kaiden Guhle and Justin Barrow back from injury.
Heat offense facing a new challenge. Also, Jaime Jaquez Jr. has a big decision to make and more
After dealing with relentless injury issues last season, the Miami Heat has started this season with a relatively healthy roster. But having more players available has come with its own challenges. Those challenges have already been on display, as the Heat works through early-season issues on the offensive end. With the Heat entering Saturday night’s matchup against the Washington Wizards in Mexico City with the 22nd-ranked offensive rating through the first four games of the season, Miami is still trying to find the right balance and shot distribution within a starting lineup that’s filled with shot creators like Terry Rozier, Tyler Herro, Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.

Mets still have mountain to climb to surpass potential dynasty in the making
These Dodgers weren’t exactly the gritty team that got hot in the second half of the season and carried it to a World Series title.
There was plenty of talk during the World Series about the stable of players unable to participate for the Dodgers.
It’s a group that included Tyler Glasnow, Gavin Stone and Clayton Kershaw. And let’s not forget the other half of Shohei Ohtani — the pitcher rehabbing from elbow surgery who was a Cy Young-caliber arm before this season.

That the Dodgers still won the World Series (and somewhat easily) should send a few shock waves through the sport, especially for teams that have legitimate designs on winning it all.
This refers in part to the Mets, who took a leap this season and likely will be viewed as a championship contender (at least by much of their fan base) heading into 2025. But to use a football comparison, you have to wonder if these Dodgers are where the Chiefs, with Patrick Mahomes in the lead, were a few years ago and ready to become something of a dynasty. If basketball is more your speed, think the Warriors with Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson.
Maybe we’re only talking this way because for a change the team with the most regular season victories — and a star-studded one at that — actually won the World Series. That had not happened in a full season since 2018 (Red Sox), and had occurred only four times before that in the 21st century.
Penn State QB Drew Allar off injury report against Ohio State
Penn State quarterback Drew Allar is set to play in Saturday's key Big Ten matchup against No. 4 Ohio State.
Allar missed the second half of last week's win over Wisconsin after suffering a left knee injury, but he was not listed on the injury report for the No. 3 Nittany Lions on Saturday morning.
Penn State coach James Franklin said earlier this week that Allar could be a game-time decision and that backup Beau Pribula would take snaps with Allar in practice.

Allar ranks 10th nationally with a QBR of 83.6. He has completed 71.3% of his passes for 1,640 yards and totaled 15 touchdowns with four interceptions.
Penn State starting defensive lineman Dani Dennis-Sutton will be a game-time decision, a source told ESPN's Pete Thamel. Dennis-Sutton, who is listed as questionable, is expected to warm up and try to play.
Ohio State left tackle Zen Michalski will not play Saturday due to an unspecified injury. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day had said Wednesday that Michalski, who entered the starting lineup last week, was "trending" not to play.
‘I apologise’ – Newcastle legend breaks TV studio celebrating Alexander Isak winner against Arsenal

Newcastle fans were sent into delirium as they went in search of a first Premier Legaue win since mid-September.
One of those was Given who, despite not being in attendance for the clash, was still overjoyed by Isak's crucial goal.
So much so that whilst on punditry duty for BBC show Football Focus, his wild celebrations saw him break the table in front of him.
"I'm just going to let you in on a little secret," presenter Kelly Somers said. "It's been a bit chaotic in the studio.
"Shay Given has just broken part of the set. Why have you broken part of the set?"
Whilst holding what appeared to be a light fixture, Given admitted: "I just kicked the table by mistake, so I apologise."
Somers then asked: "Yeah, but why did you do that?"
