Something that binds.
A wall is reliable, people think, as long as it's covered with plaster.
But after a while, the plaster falls off, and it turns out that all the cement or lime mortar that bound the bricks in the wall has simply disappeared.
Some realize that this wall is no longer a wall, while others continue to see it as a wall :)
