Part 5/14:
The Duterte administration (2016–2022) took a notably accommodating stance towards China, prioritizing economic engagement and maintaining a non-confrontational posture. During Duterte’s tenure, China lifted restrictions on Filipino fishermen, even as the country's claims in the South China Sea remained legally upheld but politically challenged.
In contrast, President Marcos Jr., who succeeded Duterte, has adopted a more assertive position—stepping away from Duterte's policy of benign neglect towards Chinese encroachments and actively defending Philippine sovereignty. This shift includes increased military cooperation with the United States, the expansion of joint military exercises like the Balikatan drills, and an emphasis on reclaiming rights in the West Philippine Sea.
