Part 10/13:

An essential question remains: are humans inherently competitive, status-seeking creatures? Even in an abundant future, will we find new ways to compete over scarce resources—be they social, reputational, or physical?

Research such as the Rat Park experiments indicate that scarcity, struggle, and lack of stimulation contribute to vices and addiction. Conversely, in abundant, stimulating environments, humans may flourish and be less driven by material desire. But the pessimistic view argues that without scarcity, purpose and motivation may diminish, leading to apathy, boredom, or even societal decline.
