Although capable of exerting considerable pressure on Myanmar to uphold peace, China’s current approach is largely driven by its own interests. It seems to prefer backchannel communications and pragmatic engagement rather than overt confrontation. China fears that increased US-led support for resistance groups or democratic movements could escalate tensions or turn Myanmar into a proxy battleground, similar to regional conflicts elsewhere.
